What monsters do you want to see more of?

Dragons just because I'm always happy to see dragons. Never too many dragons.

Hydras and anything snake-like.

Harpies.

I'd love to see a female version of a satyr.

Wendigo.

Djinn.

Phoenix/fire-bird.

Phoenixes. I read a really cool book as a kid that had kids turn into one.

Gryphons. Was also obsessed with them because of a book I read as a kid.

I want more horrific werewolves, not sexy or tragic ones.

More North American monsters, like wendigos and chupacabra.

That's how I feel about vampires: Sure, I like sexy ones sometimes. But give us more scary, terrifying ones that aren't sexy in the slightest.

Cosmic horrors, not just Cthulhu. Give me a dhole, or Yog-Sothoth, or something.

Also dragons.
Also angels (of the many-eyed, many-winged kind)...

I'm down with more 'biblical' angels, how they were described with a thousand wings and eyes and fire and all that. Totally un-human, weird, un-fluffy, heh.

Baba Yaga

I am just really in a big Baba Yaga phase and would love to see more and varied versions.

I'd like to see more mermaids but not the western ones, I want the Japanese ones that will eat you. Those are more interesting to me than Ariel.

hippocampuses (a sort of mer-Pegasus) and campchurches (sea unicorns and I have no idea why they're called that)

Vengeful ghosts, mermaids, selkies and kelpies like the OP of #7, wendigo, fae who aren't just sexy romantasy characters,

Re: What monsters do you want to see more of?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-12 04:28 am (UTC)(link)
I know you can get a lot of Japanese ghost/monster stories from anime but there's so much untapped Asian potential across the board. More snakes, be they Yamata no Orochi or naga or whatever, even Mayan Kukulcan type winged snakes. Also, Egyptian and Assyrian mythology has creatures yet to be explored, skip mummies let's go ancient cults raising crocodile gods please.

I'm iffy on wendigo, though, I think enough first nations have come out asking people not to misinterpret their legends that I have to give it a pass unless sanctioned. Now, a story produced by native creators with full permission? I bet it would have takes on it far more interesting than the gross way X-Files introduced the idea to pop culture.

What mosnters do you want to see less of?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-12 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Or monsters/myths you just don't personally like or find interesting.

Selkies

(Anonymous) 2025-12-12 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
I'm not sure why but they really exploded in my fandom at one point and I just do not get the appeal. The whole mythology behind them just makes little sense to me (not that much mythological animals really make sense, but still) and I have less than zero interest in them.

Sexy or tragic werewolves. Just let them be violent monsters. Same on vampires.

I am so over vampires and zombies

(Anonymous) 2025-12-12 02:39 am (UTC)(link)
Just done with them both. I've never found vampires intersting and I think zombies have been overused at this point and need a break.

Re: What mosnters do you want to see less of?

(Anonymous) 2025-12-12 04:30 am (UTC)(link)
yes to zombies and vampires, I'll add mummies. basically take your classic monsterverse quad (Dracula, Frankenstein, the Mummy, the Wolfman) and get out with all of it. overdone. blah.

Spiders. Not because they can't be scary, though I do kind of like the little ones. And not because there are too many movies. Just that, CGI or practical effects, the damn fake ones never look real, small or big (no, not even Shelob). None of them move right. My suspension of disbelief just won't engage because of how wrong it seems to me.

To the anon with the Mary Berry secret

(Anonymous) 2025-12-12 12:25 am (UTC)(link)
Thank you for the secret! December is a really hard month for me, particularly this year, and I've been wanting just gentle fun simple shows to watch and the episode she has with Sue was just the exact thing. I loved it. I loved their obvious friendship and their energy. And the food looked good too! I never would have found that without your secret (I rarely go on youtube these days).

Glad you liked it! There's a lot of Mary Berry content on Youtube, I think. She's just lovely to watch... very comforting and gentle.

Vent and ask for recs, I guess

(Anonymous) 2025-12-12 07:06 am (UTC)(link)
I am trying to find something to watch. Sometimes I ask my mutuals for recommendations, but omg their recs kinda suck. One person recommended Bad Monkey twice. Frankly this show looks extremely unappealing to me, probably for shallow reasons like bright colors and Vincent Vaughn. Also if I see another cozy fluffy rec I am going to scream. My comfort shows come from nordic noir, for fuck sake.
*screams of frustration

So, like Wallander, The Killing or The Chestnut Man?

I'm guessing you tried True Detective and Fargo.

Maybe Outback Noir might work for you, like Scrublands or High Country.

Then there's Monsieur Spade or Sugar.

If you haven't seen both the British and Swedish Wallander series, I recommend them. For something newer, maybe "Down Cemetery Road"? It's not Nordic, but it just finished and it stars Emma Thompson has a private investigator.

Another British crime drama that's more of a slow burn mystery, excellent cast:

Also not Nordic, but Dark Winds is also good. It's about the Navajo Tribal police, so more of a southwestern vibe:
