Chatty coworkers

(Anonymous) 2025-12-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Does anyone else have coworkers who talk constantly? All of my coworkers are nice people, and I genuinely like them, but they are all extremely talkative, and it just wears me down. One in particular narrates every single thing she does, she honestly should be a Twitch streamer, because she is capable of talking nonstop. It just exhausts me to deal with it all day long. I'm pretty introverted, and sometimes I just want to say PLEASE PLEASE CAN WE HAVE SOME SHHH. I can tune it out to some extent, but I feel bad if I'm ignoring someone who is talking, so I feel compelled to respond.

Ear plugs help a lot. I have't needed them so far in my new job. But at my previous job we were right by the highway and it was loud. I wore earplugs whenever I was at my desk needing to focus. Made a big difference.

Makes me glad I work remotely now. So when there is chatter, it's limited to pre or post zoom meeting.

I've had people get mad at me for staying in my cubicle and not socializing to the degree they do. I'm like, bitch? Are you serious? I don't go around telling you to shut the fuck up. Must be nice to have such a cushy and uneventful job.

Even when I worked in the office I would have my headphones on almost all the time.

There's one I have that is *constantly* chatting to her desk neighbours. I usually solve it by plugging in headphones and drowning her out.

Dude, I feel that so hard. Drives me nuts. Plus the ladies at the house almost always have the tv on (and usually on something awful, like 'Big Brother' or 'Dr. Phil' or something, and sometimes you just CANNOT get away from the noise.

I can't do it, but get you some good headphones and just say you concentrate better without distractions, you need to use them sometimes. Then never take them off, heh.

I have one who is SUPER annoying and loud as hell to the point that I am seriously thinking of looking for a new job in the new year to get away from her.

Loop earplugs are your friend. I use the engage model so I can still hear the talking and it’s easy for me to detect if I need to, well, engage or not. But also I don’t hear them at the same time. It’s hard to explain. Whatever I’m looking at is unmuffled and everything else is muffled but my brain’s still processing it all, just not consciously. So I notice if someone says my name or asks a question even if I’m not looking at them. But this is only true of people talking in close proximity to me. I couldn’t say an exact distance but it’s pretty close. At stores, I’m oblivious to everything unless someone is right on top of me. When using the small, super crowded self checkout kiosks at Walmart, I have no idea what is going on at the one next to me and it’s only maybe four feet away.

I like to talk sometimes, but I also have days where I just want to listen to music/podcasts. It's a hard balance because one of my coworkers is super chatty and she can take my low social battery days personally. I care about her feelings because we're friendly, but I don't care so much that I feel a need to coddle her feelings.
When I tell her I'm not in a chatty mood because my social battery is low, I don't care if she believes me or not. If she thinks I'm mad at her and I don't want to talk to her then sure, whatever. I'm here to clock in and clock out. I'm not here to have a reputation as the nice coworker who was always so nice to talk to. I'm the nice sometimes but quiet other times coworker.

Headphones are a must.

My team at work are moderate talkers. My boss can be a bit too much, but anyway.
We have this woman who is like a nosy fucking neighbor.
1. She is from a different department but is sitting with us (long story), so this is already an annoyance
2. She somehow must be in Every Fucking Conversation Ever work or otherwise
3. With absolutely wild takes and no tact. Like my colleague mentioned some book and she was "Oh I didn't know you read. I've brought some books and you never touched it". Books she brought are self-help books about conflict resolutions. Girl. Giiirl
Ironically I know I could have been friendly with her outside of work. She is an interesting person enough. But at work? It's been a time
