Fandom_secrets used to be my nostalgic haven from modern hellsites and social media, but seeing AI images in here is so goddamn depressing.

People who make their own secrets often google and just grab the first image that looks easy to add text to. I'm just happy to see activity.

??

(Anonymous) 2026-01-31 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't noticed any, but I'm terrible at identifying it, to the point where I've stopped using Google Images when making secrets because I don't want to use one by accident.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-31 11:10 pm (UTC)(link)
the only one I've definitely noticed was one with monkeys a week ago. it was pretty obvious it wasn't a photo, just weird blurry textures that no species of monkey has.

A while back we had some very obvious AI-made secrets for a week or two but they got such negative reactions for being AI generated that I assume they stopped because of the blowback.

Secret maker (but not the OP)

(Anonymous) 2026-01-31 11:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Just a general FYI, I don't knowingly use AI generated images to make peoples' comment secrets, unless the secret text is specifically referencing AI or some kind of AI art. (Example: someone submitted a secret about AI art in puzzles, and I found an image that showed an example of what they were talking about.)

However... I'm also not great at discerning what is AI and what isn't. And I suspect I'm not alone in that, so you might want to cut people some slack here. If using fanart, I usually credit artists if I can find the source, but I can't always find it.

Cheers,

a secret maker

Fair enough! AI art, though it still looks a bit off to me, is definitely getting better at some details.

I mean, a lot of people like to scream "AI ART!!!11!one!" at anything they don't like, regardless of it being AI or not. Those who hate AI art are no better at recognising it than those who don't mind it.

I’ve never noticed AI for any secrets that I know you made. And I often read the submission thread so I tend to recognize almost every secret.

There were some secrets last year, I think in the summer annd autumn if I remember correctly, that were made with AI. The pictures were over the words, the words were frequently gibberish, and the pictures were sometimes glaringly AI. I don’t recall any having people with extra hands or fingers but the issues were similar to that stuff.

I've never been able to id AI to save my life. Anything AI can do a human can do; how do I know that some person didn't make it like that on purpose??

(Anonymous) 2026-01-31 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Both yes and no. Technically, AI doesn't DO anything. It just rips work from what it can find and uses an algorithm to stick it together to look what the person using it asked for.
Tbh I not good at telling AI from not either, but some search engines can filter it using settings.

(Anonymous) 2026-01-31 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
It's mostly because AI inconsistencies wouldn't make sense as something done on purpose.

Things like multiple fingers or toes, because a human would have noticed the error while working on this specific part of the image and would have likely fixed it.

And sure, people have accidentally added or removed limbs in Photoshop before but those are noticeable errors. When AI generated images have too many/few limbs it's usually in a way that's not immediately noticeable on first glance because the generated image is supposed to look like it makes sense.

Basically, if the image looks fine while scrolling but has weird effects going on when looking closer, it's usually AI. And yes, caveat, some artists go for the "look closer" weirdness in their art on purpose, but that will usually be evident in their portfolio overall. If your aunt sends you a picture of a cat which looked normal on first glance but then turns out to have two overlaid noses and fur that goes weirdly blurry halfway down the body for no reason, it's probably AI.

(There are also actually good AI images where it's really hard to identify AI but the overwhelming amount right now is slop)

AI often has a sort of 'glossiness' or plasticy-ness to it.

Also, and this is sort of advanced but the highest/brightest colour will be equal to the darkest colour.

It has trouble with repeating patterns so things like cable knit sweaters, knitting, things like that will look "off" in some way.

Logic just doesn't work, like a collar of a shirt will blend into hair or something.

I haven't noticed any

but I'm not great at spotting AI unless it's really obvious. I'd be sad too. It seems to be infiltrating every aspect of life.

I thought I could easily spot AI but things posted there sometimes I think are clearly real are not at all.

I am so far past caring. I have my “don’t hurt people” rule, and people want me to add a “don’t interact with AI art” rule, and I just go “fuck that, my ‘don’t hurt people’ rule is good enough already.” I don’t even want to think about AI, let alone feel emotions about it.

Do not come at me about water use. People keep quoting contradictory statistics and then accusing the other people of lying about statistics, so I’m staying the hell out of it until I find some statistics I’m reasonably certain aren’t lies.

I just feel like, with all the massive problems in the world currently, AI is nowhere near the top. I just don't have the energy to care about that when there is so much outright evil going on right now.

It's not just the water use, it's the driving up of electric bills and potentially kicking people out of a job. And basically stealing art/writing/music from people. Use generative AI without heavy regulations, you are very much hurting people. Of course, if you accidentally use an AI pic, that's understandable. Given how fast it's evolving, I'm sure almost everyone will run into that at least once. But just saying "fuck it" or knowingly using it because you're "so far past caring" isn't great.

Then there's the more hideous side of it, surveilling the public to catch criminals with a system that's scanned by AI.
