As soon as a content creator gets openly religious, I drop them. Casual cultural stuff like "bless you" or whatever I can ignore, jokingly thanking their deity/deities of choice I can ignore, mentioning they are something in their private life is debatable depending on what it is and how serious they sound, but being an outright, straightforward believer on camera? Genuinely saying they think some deity helped them or interfered with their lives and is totally real? Nope nope nope unsub unfollow quit patreon block

Me too.

And it's not a thing I'd admit to more widely, but on FS I can confess that simply finding out a creator is religious changes my opinion on them. I do try to resist that bias in myself and sometimes it works, especially if they're usually quiet about it.

Same

I honestly find this a little weird. Religious views, regardless of what they are, don't bother me until they start taking over the creator's content or unless they are the type of religious views that come with things like racism or thinking everyone who doesn't agree with your views is going to hell or something like that.

I'm not weirded out by religious views any more than I'm weirded out by any views or beliefs different than mine. I only start caring when it becomes something that is harmful to others.

I am aware this is not kind of me, but honestly when I find out people believe in a god or are super religious it's a very "well they believe in magic so they can't really be reasoned with or trusted" feeling. I tend to just automatically think less of them.

It's something I'm working on.

I don't really care as long as religion doesn't "take over" their content. Which has happened a few times with some vloggers I (un)followed years ago.

Same.

I don't know, once I find a creator is (openly) religious I just lost any connection with their work. I will absolutely judge people based on this, too.

Bands, authors, artists, all of them. The moment you start thanking Jesus or I find out you're a mormon or whatever, I'm out.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-06 04:25 am (UTC)(link)
so do you just not listen to any classical or baroque composers' work then? like, refusing to listen to the work of ANY religious artist leaves a lot of stuff out

I don't drop them, but I would be lying if I didn't look at their content differently.

I don’t read author interviews and such, so I only know their religion if it gets into the storyline. I see a lot less of that in newer books for some reason.

As long as they don't try to evangelize or harp on it like they've newly converted, I'm usually okay with it.

Saaaaame

This gives me schadenfreude for the recent discussion where an anon was told they must be American and wouldn't last outside the US with their disgust for nudity. Anon, you wouldn't last a second in the US. All our politicians thank God in their speeches, even the progressive ones. Do I love it? No, but I shrug and let it slide. Glad you live in a nice secular bubble, would love to see you try leaving for a while.

Not OP

I'm an American living in America and I avoid it quite easily.

DA
Same.

Now here I am wondering if this is about theprincessames.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-06 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I can see that. IMO, when it's gotten to the point where they ascribing credit to a deity for something that's an accident, the result of hard work, luck, whatever... that belief is going to bleed through someplace else and I won't like that.

I'd feel the same way about a creator who casually mentions they use essential oils or homeopathy instead of medicine and doctors, or who credits herbal supplements for their aunt beating cancer or something. It's a level of nuttiness that's not going to be contained to just that one area.

+1, I had someone tell me that since I had survived cancer I must now believe in God and she was deeply shocked when I said that I never even thought about it until she mentioned it. I think she thought of atheists as vindictively rebelling against god, not just a plain old lack of belief or even interest in believing.

Genuine question: does this apply to religions other than Christianity? I think I'm a lot more sensitive to discovering people are really into Jesus than I am about, say, discovering they're Muslim or Hindu or neopagan or Buddhist. Probably because of the social and political implications of being openly Christian in the Anglosphere, specifically with regard to Evangelists.

Ann Rearden's weird Jesus diatribe during her gingerbread house video made me unfollow/unsub.

I know the feeling.
