Receipts are fine. I'd say they're essential. Look at it this way - If somebody did do something bad in the past, but they've haven't been doing it since and have in fact been doing their best to make up for it, I'd want to know.

Of course, this depends on a number of factors as well. A dumb kid doing something bad 20 years ago because they didn't know better? I'd probably tell the shamer to fuck off. It would depend on the nature of the offense as well.

Yeah-- a lot depends on the nature of the offense, and the timing! A lot of things are 'dumb kid' offenses, easily forgiven. Many more things are also easily forgiven if they were a one-time thing and never repeated once it was pointed out to the person that they did or said something harmful. But, if someone has a long history of racism, for example, I might be looking for dogwhistles when engaging with their work even if they had been keeping quiet on social media more recently. I could give them the opportunity to show me they've changed, but also keep that awareness that they might *not* have.

Eh, I'm 50/50 on this. Like, yeah, don't be a dick about other people's thing. But I definitely want to see receipts so I can see any through-line red flags. Some people have grown, and some people have learned how to hide it better.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-07 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed. I had a bad experience with someone in fandom over a decade ago and I was willing to shrug it off and assume they'd matured when I ran into them in a completely different fandom last year...

... and then they behaved EXACTLY the same way they had more than a decade prior. Some people do not, in fact, grow or change.

Nah I want receipts. But I also take a lot of things into consideration when viewing them. I’ve seen silly amounts of outrage in the 2020s for people saying 90s/2000s/2010s stuff in the 90s/2000s/2010s and in those cases I’m more likely to judge the judge than the defendant.

Same, like someone said something stupid when they were 20, and now they are 40, and everybody acts like they're exactly the same person?

Unless they do something to show they haven't matured, in most cases that person has grown up.

I don't think the example you quote has much to do with what you complain about, OP.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-07 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I was with you in the beginning and then the example kind of threw me.

Is “this thing isn’t incredibly misunderstood/secretly brilliant” and “you should be more ashamed of being a fan” the same thing for you?

(Anonymous) 2026-02-07 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
First of all, disclaimer, I don't know anything about Hazbin so I am not commenting at all on that front.

But I can see where you're coming from, I think mostly. You don't have to be an asshole about things you don't like. It's ok to not like something, but you don't have to shit on the thing/the people who do like it.

As for receipts, that kind of varies for me. If you go back to 2011 and dig up a mildly off-color Tweet that someone made when they were 17 and use that as evidence that theyre a horrible person, yeah, that's ridiculous. But if it's recent stuff I think it's fair game.

A lot of people want to find a moral reason to dislike something/someone, and they will act as though if someone does or says something bad, it means that they are an irredeemable trash garbage human being who can never, ever be forgiven. It doesn't matter how long ago it was, or how much they have apologized and reformed. Once they do something bad, they are in fact a bad person FOREVER.

Which is ridiculous.

Yeah i guess thats what I'm getting at. Also I'm frustrated at how often people will come up claiming "oh i have receipts Viv did something bad recently" but they're gone by the time someone asks "hey. Can we see it?"

I guess i just posted this in sheer frustration that there seems to be this group of people who seem to hate Viv like she's JKR abd everything she does is HORRIBLY offensive because.....reasons"

And things not even done by her/not even her decision are her fault..its been something thats built up in smaller incidents until i saw that and just got so frustrated.

I'm sorry I just....

The Hazbin/Viv hatedom is a very strange place. I've seen the "Viv has done something bad, I have the receipts" comments in the wild and it's very obvious that they're just trying to stir up trouble. There's only ever vague speculation in the replies, the OPs always disappear and no one ever actually brings up something concrete or verifiable.

the most annoying part is that they're gungho dead set on trying to shame fans and convince everyone to agree with them and mock Hazbin fans who dare to stick up for what they like like they're die-hard stans

I won't ever deny some of the fandom misbehaves sometimes Like i've seen some of the ship warriors say rotten shitty things at one another. but....all fandoms have that to some degree

IME I feel like we're hardly different from any other fandom out there?

I agree 100%. Is Viv perfect? No way. But is she JKR levels of bad? Fuck no.

Evidently Viv said something bad about trans people 15+ years ago one time in a private conversation but at least she hires trans people to play trans characters today. That's not at all the same as spewing transphobic nonsense to 100+k followers on a daily basis and donating large sums of money to anti-trans causes.

There's no comparison here. None whatsoever.

yeah i mean ...I dunno I prefer to judge on what I see now . and from what I see now... idk she hardly seems like the bad person some folks are insisting she is?

IDK i'm just a HazbinHellaverse fan who wants to be left alone to squee without being told I should be embarrassed for what I like

I don’t go here but from the outside all of the hate screams misogyny. I’m sorry that the hatedom has overshadowed your fandom, OP.

They didn't have my chips at the store. That's misogyny, too, right?
