Something new (to you) that you enjoyed

(Anonymous) 2026-02-15 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)

Anything good you’ve recently watched, read, listened to, eaten, played, made, or otherwise experienced?

(Brought to you by two new-to-me things that have been lingering in my mind for weeks: the film Sinners and the art of Ruth Asawa who does these incredible wire sculptures.)

The practical effects were so good. Hell, even the CGI has aged pretty well!

That sounds delicious, I have to try that! I even have an apple at home, it must be fate, lol.

That sounds amazing! Going to the grocery store tomorrow and I'm definitely buying cottage cheese so I can try this.

Tried a couple new restaurants this weekend. Asia Mind has really tasty teriyaki salmon and a delicious flourless chocolate cake. and the BBQ place I tried friday night was tasty. Hoping the burger place I ordered from for dinner tonight is also good.

I like Fred Astaire, but hadn't really thought about Broadway Melody of 1940, probably mostly because of the title, which I think is a terribly generic title especially since there was already a The Broadway Melody (aka The Broadway Melody of 1929), Broadway Melody of 1936, and Broadway Melody of 1938, none of which are sequels. But Eleanor Powell was really acrobatic and while I didn't really like the balletic number, the rest of them were pretty good and I really liked how they fit the music and dance numbers into the story (which is kind of a thing for Fred Astaire movies in general, the musical numbers not being out of context in the narrative).

I finally watched Wake Up Dead Man. As someone with religious trauma it was really hard to get through, but I really enjoyed the writing, the acting was superb, and I love Blanc's character even more. I'm so happy they kept him firmly and happily a heretic throughout. I'm so used to story lines like this making the unbeliever at the very least see something to make them doubt themselves and it always pisses me the fuck off.

Oh man yeah, it was so good. It honored his position-- and his own alluded to religious trauma-- while still having him *respect* Jud's faith, because despite his annoyance at several points, he was in a place where he could see that this was a man not only trying not to use faith as a cudgel against others, but trying to repair that relationship between religion and those who might have been burned by it? I loved that it had a really nuanced and human look at the good and bad sides of faith/religion... and that positive look at being non-religious, not having that waver just because he meets one good priest, having his belief specifically be in HUMAN kindness/decency.

Too often if you DO have a character whose lack of religion never wavers, it's because they're a specific brand of atheist, and for a lesser writer I think it would be very easy to have a detective fall into that mold, being too smugly logical for a belief in something that can't be measured, but then, Blanc *isn't* someone whose reliance on logic leads him to discount what can't be measured-- he also relies on his instincts around people, and all those gut things that have to be circled back to once more information is obtained. He just does not have and will not have a relationship with the church or faith in God, and making his *peace* with the subject doesn't mean he has to believe in any of it.

Also the mystery was a LOT of fun, but that's what I've expected from Rian Johnson since Brick.

AYRT

I think that's the thing that really sets Blanc apart, his belief in humanity and his evaluation of people. He loves solving crimes, but he's so good at it that it's not his primary objective anymore. He seems to spend most of his intellect figuring out who deserves his compassion and how to give it to them (while still solving the crime).

Well said!

Agreed. I like Blanc as he is, I don't want him converted or doubting his belief system because of some quasi-magic plot device. That happens way too often, and it's tiresome af.

I’ve been playing games from Steam’s RPG Maker sale. Standout so far is Penelope Syndrome, which has a zombie attack and a cryptid attack going on at the same time, so you can get killed by kappas or a vampire.

Bought some pineapple teriyaki chicken meatballs at Trader Joe's-- that's not the new part, I know I'm a big fan of those, I've added them to instant ramen or a cup of minute rice, put them on a small bun, really enjoyed them... but, this time when I got them, and some buns for little meatball sandwiches, I had onion jam in the fridge. And oh man, the onion jam with the pineapple teriyaki? Next. level.

I keep thinking I should get some onion or bacon jam and see how they'd be for savory thumbprint cookies (using cheese). There are recipes online with red pepper jelly but that doesn't sound as interesting to me.

I am watching Taskmaster at last, quite enjoying it.
Also I've read Piranesi on a weekend. Such a beautiful book! I've tried reading it some time ago, but wasn't in a good headspace at that time.

Always glad to hear someone recently watched and enjoyed Sinners!

For me, did my first reiki session that a friend hosted over the weekend. Beautiful experience! I don't really buy into all of the woo-woo our spirits and bodies can literally give and absorb energies and my spirit literally can transcend through space and time, but I do like using a shared, calm experience as a form of getting in touch with one's emotions. Also a good excuse for the group I was with to be vulnerable with each other. Some of us were familiar with each other, and there were some where this was our first time meeting each other.
