Something new (to you) that you enjoyed

(Anonymous) 2026-02-15 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)

Anything good you’ve recently watched, read, listened to, eaten, played, made, or otherwise experienced?

(Brought to you by two new-to-me things that have been lingering in my mind for weeks: the film Sinners and the art of Ruth Asawa who does these incredible wire sculptures.)

Tried a couple new restaurants this weekend. Asia Mind has really tasty teriyaki salmon and a delicious flourless chocolate cake. and the BBQ place I tried friday night was tasty. Hoping the burger place I ordered from for dinner tonight is also good.

I like Fred Astaire, but hadn't really thought about Broadway Melody of 1940, probably mostly because of the title, which I think is a terribly generic title especially since there was already a The Broadway Melody (aka The Broadway Melody of 1929), Broadway Melody of 1936, and Broadway Melody of 1938, none of which are sequels. But Eleanor Powell was really acrobatic and while I didn't really like the balletic number, the rest of them were pretty good and I really liked how they fit the music and dance numbers into the story (which is kind of a thing for Fred Astaire movies in general, the musical numbers not being out of context in the narrative).

I finally watched Wake Up Dead Man. As someone with religious trauma it was really hard to get through, but I really enjoyed the writing, the acting was superb, and I love Blanc's character even more. I'm so happy they kept him firmly and happily a heretic throughout. I'm so used to story lines like this making the unbeliever at the very least see something to make them doubt themselves and it always pisses me the fuck off.

I’ve been playing games from Steam’s RPG Maker sale. Standout so far is Penelope Syndrome, which has a zombie attack and a cryptid attack going on at the same time, so you can get killed by kappas or a vampire.

Bought some pineapple teriyaki chicken meatballs at Trader Joe's-- that's not the new part, I know I'm a big fan of those, I've added them to instant ramen or a cup of minute rice, put them on a small bun, really enjoyed them... but, this time when I got them, and some buns for little meatball sandwiches, I had onion jam in the fridge. And oh man, the onion jam with the pineapple teriyaki? Next. level.

I am watching Taskmaster at last, quite enjoying it.
Also I've read Piranesi on a weekend. Such a beautiful book! I've tried reading it some time ago, but wasn't in a good headspace at that time.

Always glad to hear someone recently watched and enjoyed Sinners!

For me, did my first reiki session that a friend hosted over the weekend. Beautiful experience! I don't really buy into all of the woo-woo our spirits and bodies can literally give and absorb energies and my spirit literally can transcend through space and time, but I do like using a shared, calm experience as a form of getting in touch with one's emotions. Also a good excuse for the group I was with to be vulnerable with each other. Some of us were familiar with each other, and there were some where this was our first time meeting each other.

I got a lot more done on my stegosaurus. I hate everything about him but I know it is just because it is my first needlefelting project and I see everything I did wrong. ;_;

Really enjoying my hotel stay. gotten lots of sleep, feel so relaxed. And really nice hot tub, so had a couple nice baths. Glad I did this, I really needed it. And I'd stay in this hotel again.

I made a ton of batches of food for freezing and freeze drying. I also made some backpacking gear with Dyneema and I’m happy I did it but the one thing that needed to be waterproof isn’t. I’ve tried taping over where I think it’s leaking and at this point the thing is more seam sealing tape than Dyneema fabric and it still leaks. Oh, well. I used only a tiny corner of the material and have a lot left over for other things. I order three half yards all in different colors and they accidentally sent me a full yard of one of the colors. I emailed them, just waiting to hear back so I can go ahead and pay them for it and then I plan to make a bunch of stuff sacks and I need to make a rescue along for my dog still.

Never did find out what the heck the police copter incident was about, but the afternoon tea with friends was a great deal of fun and the friend whose birthday it was was pleasantly surprised and pleased with the gifts (some Penzey's spices).

Have been on a library tour. It was a bit basic, but still had fun, I just love libraries!
Also apparently they have Mafia in English days and they are planning on tabletop in English days. I am excited about it, even though it kinda sucks on a transport level.
I also spent some time in the library reading and chilling, it was good.
I've started at last doing things about my hair problems. Apparently I do have skin condition affecting oil production, so no amount of "you don't need to wash your hair every day" were going to ever help. Shocker /s

So all in all it was a good weekend even though the weather was just awful and I even had a mild break down about it.

Reminder: "Secrets you don't want to make..." thread is still up!

So I drew fanart for an OC in someones fic, but I'm not sure I should share it. I like it but the character is very much a villain and turned out to be a child molester... also they have an Good Guy OC who I could have drawn, so it makes it sorta awkward that a drew the Villain over him.

So should I share it? Would you be weirded out or offended to get art for a child molester when other options are available??

So it's sounding more and more like Discord is in bed with Palantir. (Okay, Persona, but close enough.) Anyone know of any viable alternatives to the shitshow?

Aging parents.

(Anonymous) 2026-02-16 04:24 am (UTC)(link)
Someone recced the subreddit the other day and I spent like... two hours reading over posts because I'm in a similar situation and it's helped me come to a decision that's been troubling me. My father is in his 80s, and not in great health. He's still able to physically get around without assistance for now, but his mental faculties are slipping. Memory is worsening, which I'd expect at his age. But he's getting snappish and impatient, with a mean, petty streak.

Someone on the subreddit said that having aging parents was kind of like childhood in reverse and it was infuriating and heartbreaking - your parents get childish, unpredictable, bratty, unable to cope. Only unlike toddlers, they're not going to make any progress. It's only going to get worse. I see that with my father. It's not very bad yet, but it's been heading in that direction for the past couple years. He's bossy and wants everything his way, and even if you bend over backwards for him he's still not happy. He's physically deteriorating and not willing to do anything that might help him remain independent, including eating a healthier diet.

Ten years ago, I had this idea that maybe he could live with me when he gets to the point where he needs help. I can drive him around, take him to appointments, cook better meals, help him with everyday tasks. It wouldn't be great, there are definitely drawbacks to this plan but it seemed possible to me then. My dad doesn't want to go into assisted living and has said he'd rather die. I want his final years to be comfortable. But now... no. I don't think I can do this for him. It'd be one thing if he were nice or at least trying to be patient and nice when people help him. But he isn't. I can see myself trapped with a sick, angry old man who won't lift a finger to help himself, but is more than happy to berate me for not being able to fix all his problems, including the ones he created. I'd be miserable.

So now, when the time comes and he has a bad fall or can no longer take care of himself physically, assisted living it is. I feel bad about it, but not bad enough to sacrifice the rest of my life for him. It's my hope that he dies quickly and painlessly before he reaches that point - and that would also be his preference. But no way in hell am I taking on the caregiver role.

TW death

My uncle will probably die today. If not, he'll be in need of 24/7 care. I'm in a weirdly ambivalent state about it- on one hand, I never had much contact with him and I don't really care much, I guess but on the other hand, it's been pretty sudden. He wasn't a healthy man and it was expected that he wouldn't get to a very high age but he was just with us for a month over Christmas and was pretty happy (I was always annoyed at him for staying so long but he's a lonely, slightly mentally disabled old man so we all sucked it up).
Then he got the flu which in his case is bad news because he has a underlying lung disease. But he looked like he was doing better and then he got much worse all of a sudden. I think the main thing I'm concerned about is my dad because that's his little brother and last living relative from his family. My mom is with him in the city where my uncle's in hospital at least so he's not alone in this situation.
