People who think Remmick/Sammie is proof of racism in this fandom have never been in a fandom before. They are textbook enemies to lovers. The real sign of racism is the fact Smoke/Stack isn't more popular.

Dang, what? People say that Remmick/Sammie being popular is a sign of racism??

I thought Remmick/Sammie as a popular ship would be an indication the Sinners fandom is being slightly less racist than is usual, because most of the time, obvious ships DON'T get shipped because they are interracial/involve black characters in favor of some other white guy/white guy pairing (e.g. what happened to Gus/Shawn from Psych). Remmick/Sammie seemed like the obvious ship that would normally get passed over by fans because they're not interested in black characters, so I thought people would see its popularity in Sinners fandom as a refreshing turn for the better. Weird.

I like Smoke/Stack, but since it's an incest ship, I get that it's not to everyone's taste. And you can still get antis coming for your blood for admitting you like *any* incest pairings in *any* fandom. Even though I like Smoke/Stack, I'm not into this movie enough for it to be worth casually mentioning on my blog that I ship it -- it's just really not a great time to have incest ships. :/

+1, *any* black character in the most popular ship is progress! Psych fandom is the #1 most obvious example, but hardly the only one. And it's really rare for an incest ship to be popular.

For me Psych is a bit weird, because I am just not into long time close friends ships if they don't have some sort of drama. 😅
But I do ship Bucky/Sam for example.

Yeah, everyone's got a reason why they don't ship Gus/Shawn that isn't racism.

It seems like you are being sarcastic. And yes, racism and prejudice does affect shipping too. But shipping is still not an activism. I am not going to ship something just for woke points.
And sometimes fandom's darling pairing is not because they ignore a black guy, but because fandom tends to go for certain tropes. Sometimes both. Sometimes it IS just racism.

And lots of folks who get overly attached to ships and take it personally that others don't ship the same things that they do resort to accusations of bigotry to try to guilt people into shipping the "correct" things and/or to justify treating them poorly. It's "how dare you not like the things that I like" dressed up as social justice.

Huh, I haven’t seen that take before and I agree with you, OP, that it’s a bit wide of the mark. Admittedly, I haven’t really gotten into shippy fandom for this one, more meta/analysis than fanfic so far.

On a more general point… Sometimes I think that certain people who have more recently discovered the concept of unconscious/unstated racism go through a period of seeing it everywhere in everything, even when it’s not a particularly relevant factor. All part of the learning process, I guess, and hopefully a step towards a more nuanced understanding of racism.

I'm not in the fandom (lOVED the movie though) so I won't comment on the specifics of this secret. I will say though that as someone who's main fandom ship is quasi-incestual (it's...complicated, particularly due to translation differences) and who has had straight up incest ships before, fandom is general seems a lot more hostile to incest ships than in the past. I'm not surprised a twin incest ship isn't more popular. You even see this in fandoms where it's CANON (see the pearl-clutching with The Coffin of Andy and Leyley). The surge in moral grandstanding is real.

I mean, I dunno. I'm a fan of an incest pairing from a game that's about 13 years old at this point, and there was a lot of hostility toward the ship back when the game was new. The most popular content creators would get plenty of anonymous hate and rude comments, and posts complaining about the ship would regularly show up in the main fandom tag on Tumblr.

So, I think it's a YMMV situation. There are definitely fandoms where incest has traditionally been accepted, but in others, the disapproval has been there for awhile.

AYRT
Fair. When I was younger, I was mostly in anime fandoms, in the livejournal/fanfiction.net days. It was definitely a different vibe.

To paraphrase a tumblr classic, do you ever see a post about discourse that's like seeing the fin of a gigantic shark just breach the surface of the water next to you

Like what the fuck what that

(Anonymous) 2026-02-23 04:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I know right?

Sinners is too good a movie to want fanfiction for (imho) so finding out it has Shipping Discourse is w i l d.

Since Smoke/Stack is incest, I don't think it's fair to say that people dislike it due to racism. Incest can sometimes be popular, but it's also a squick for a lot of people, regardless of the race of the characters.
