Lots of the people in one of my fandom discords are super lovely people, they're good for bouncing ideas off of and we all just love chatting about the canon, it's just a nice place to be.

So many of them are some of the worst artists I've ever seen however and no matter how sweet they are I can't lie and pretend that what they're showing in the art channels is any good, so I just don't say anything and leave them to it.

Ooh, that's a tough one, OP.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 07:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I really find secret and picture combo hilarious, because art here is Andre Butzer, quite decent contemporary expressionist.

Anyway. I feel you, OP. Sometimes people are nice, but their works are just not good and it's awkward af

…because art here is Andre Butzer, quite decent contemporary expressionist.
Really? Holy shit. I know art is subjective but it honestly looks like something a fairly talented four year old would bring home from nursery school. The one on the left is almost identical to my brother’s self portrait that got him in the paper at age 4.

I agree entirely but add as a former art school dropout, the one thing I could never stand was the Establishment never being willing to own up to the fact that all art is subjective. Being able to not recognize genius was always the viewer's crap taste, not the art having the potential of being crap in someone's eyes.

Then again, knowing that the giant solid color canvas type shit is usually money laundering and not art has made me pretty disillusioned for gallery art to begin with.

The art establishment won't admit that because then they'd also have to admit that when it comes to quite a lot of "artist's" output, the only reason it's called "inspired" instead of "pretentious, yet crap" is that those artists are rich and have connections in the art world. Whereas the output of many artists whose work is genuinely inspired is considered valueless and unworthy of attention because they aren't rich and they don't have connections in the art world. The art establishment is just as elitist and wealth/class based as any other establishment. It just deludes itself into believing that it deserves to be elitist because it's high on its own supply.

I agree. Very well-said.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 09:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I have given up on it and accepted that when it comes to art I have very plebeian tastes. I don't and never will "get" some art styles.

NA - Hard same. I would go as far as to say my taste in visual art is fairly shallow. I like visual art that is aesthetically pleasing. If it feels evocative to me in some way, that's a big plus. And that's about it. Occasionally a piece of art I find aesthetically unappealing will speak to me in some way that makes me go, okay, yeah, I'm into it. But most of the time I just like stuff I find pleasing to look at. My taste is basic as hell, and I have decided to accept and embrace it.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Same.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)

I think that to some degree it comes down to intentionality; I don't know Andre, but I imagine he's making his art look like that on purpose, to induce some emotional response. (The desired response could well be "that looks like something my four year old brother did". I mean probably not. But I'm sure there's a non-zero amount of artists who have done that.)

Whereas the average 4-year-old is just trying their best to recreate what they've seen in real life and/or their imagination, but they're four and only just started learning how to do art at all.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is it for me. It's like the difference between an artist who knows proper anatomy and chooses to exaggerate and stylize on purpose for an effect versus an artist who doesn't know anatomy at all and is drawing with incorrect anatomy because they don't realize they aren't doing it right.

Still would rather look at human made art, even if not good, than AI shit.

We all start somewhere, though we don't all go elsewhere, and maybe there's nothing wrong with that.

But yeah, I've been there. I don't want to dump on anything or be a fake compliment giver, so I've stayed quiet myself.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 08:27 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm the same way. I try to be kind but I just can't/won't lie if something is really poorly done, so I'll just skip past it.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 08:47 pm (UTC)(link)
As an artist myself, I'm absolutely fascinated by artists who don't seem to have any concept of how bad their art is because when I look at my art I see every single flaw or thing I could have done better. The total lack of self-awareness is something I just don't understand.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 08:48 pm (UTC)(link)
My fandom is similar but it’s mostly on Reddit that I see the terrible art. The PTB are hosting an art contest to put on merch because the fandom has been whinging forever about the terrible merch but the stuff that’s getting submitted is even worse. There has been one good entry so far and the few good artists who are active in the fandom are sadly not participating in the contest :(

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 09:13 pm (UTC)(link)
At least they're trying and it's not AI slop

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 10:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh man so true

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 10:21 pm (UTC)(link)
My biggest fear is someone feeling this way about me, hah. But I'm too ashamed to share art or bounce ideas in the fandom server I'm in.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 10:27 pm (UTC)(link)
You're doing the right thing OP. Everyone starts badly somewhere and it would be worse if you told them that their art sucked.

(Anonymous) 2026-03-28 10:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I can relate to reading friends' fics and not liking them. I don't want to discourage fandom participation or creative expression, so I simply encourage them to keep writing.

I think you're handling it perfectly! I have several off-line hobbies and there are people there who are absolutely shit at them (and I'm not all that great either). But that's why it's a hobby! We're not there to make masterpieces. I hope no-one's there to make masterpieces, anyway...

I had this friend in college who was super nice but wrote terrible poetry. I couldn't tell her it sucked and I don't lie well at all so I was stuck saying stuff like "it's really sincere"
