It really isn't, though. The purge at ff.net was only one of many issues that spurred the effort to build a multi-fandom archive. Sites were going dark without warning because hosts were getting served with takedown notices. If you read about the OTW, you'll learn a lot about what went on and how AO3 is only a part of the greater effort to protect fan creators and their work. This was always more about preserving and protecting what was written against copyright holders and far less about smut is bad, mmmkay.

No, it didn’t. It sped up the creation that was already underway.

I’ll be honest: it never occurred to me that fans would be so clueless about the history of fandom even though I can see there’s no reason everyone should be aware unless they lived through it. But here is a case of people literally spoon feeding you facts and you’re rejecting them for your own narrative. That’s not just wild, it’s stupid. Luckily for you the work done to protect fans applies to you whether you are aware of it or not. You can absolutely go through fandom and life thinking AO3 is a spinoff of ff.net without any consequences except everyone who knows better rolling their eyes at your stupidity.
