Yeah, I gotta say A+ on that one.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
Hahahahaha

thank you so much for pointing that out

One of my friends does this to me all the time. It's always "I have something I want to show you on YouTube! It's only twelve minutes long and has a lot of WoW jokes you won't understand and it's awesome!" An hour and a half later, after random videos I don't really find funny or all that interesting with the rare gem tossed in, I manage to take back my laptop (yes, mine) to try to show her a three-minute video, and she walks around, talks throughout the whole thing, and stares at the wall. Another friend of mine tends to just up and leave the room without asking me to pause or anything to go to the bathroom or get food. It's infuriating. It's really all about the total lack of respect they seem to have. I have to wonder how they'd feel if I did the same to their crap. I'm BIG on mutual respect, and it must have been incredibly liberating for you to end that friendship. I, unfortunately, can't bring myself to say anything, because the shitstorm that ensues is sure to be much worse than simply not ever showing them anything I like.
:/

What an awesome response.

I actually found him a very convincing omnisexual on the show. But it may just have been wishful thinking, haha.

[identity profile] rushhour.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:21 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, this is a great secret in that it has an actual reason for being a secret. Unlike the 'my friends will judge meeee' crap, this is something you actually keep to yourself. You put the secret back into f!secret!

I'm late and babbling and this has nothing to do with anything wot

When did I say she was more Sueish than anyone else? Al definitely beats her in that respect, since he gets significantly more spotlight.

in the FMAverse, she is not a particularly unusual or unrealistic character.

That's not a good thing. It means that most of the characters are underdeveloped and not sufficiently flawed. I'll agree with Herongale on this one: Arakawa is good with plot, but tends to fall short on characterization a lot of the time.

:D PORN PORN POOOOOORRRRN!

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
This, totally.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:23 am (UTC)(link)
No, actually, I don't think so.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
Hence why I say that the reactions of other characters are important. Aside from being apparently quite attractive, she's a really boring person. The fact that this has no impact on the way that people perceive her is what defines her as a Sue.

Re: ITS ORIGIN'S CREEPINESS IS KIND OF OFF THE SCALES

[identity profile] dethtoll.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
That sounds like a load of horsepocky someone made up, to be honest.

[identity profile] christ-chexx-4u.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:27 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. DUDE. SERIOUSLY. if you can legit watch this show and still claim that beckett is nothing more than a love interest i basically question your sanity. shes my favorite modern-day, non-sci-fi female since sarah mackenzie.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
In that case, they aren't Mary Sues, they're just plot points. Canon characters as Mary Sues, except in extreme cases like Bella Swan, goes against the original definition of the term. Arakawa isn't using Riza as some sort of wish fulfillment for herself and when you get down to it, that is the one thing that ties all Mary Sues together.
herongale: (rukia- strawberries)

[personal profile] herongale 2010-02-05 06:28 am (UTC)(link)
Probably. It would be nice to know some more personal, irrelevant things about her, too... just little things like if she reads mystery novels, or what is her favorite kind of pistol, or... you know. Anything small and human.

About the closest thing I can think of is that she named her dog Black Hayate, and that little detail alone humanized her enough that I couldn't possible hate her, no matter how frustrating her lack of characterization is otherwise. "Black Hayate" implies an unexpected cuteness, a kind of dorkiness that I am very fond of in my stoical characters... it's a nice touch, but there's just not enough of this going on, you know? Same thing with Scar and his love of cats... it's a cute detail that really helps flesh out his manga persona, but it just isn't enough, since we don't see him spend enough time WITH cats for this to be meaningful.

Obviously, what the FMA manga needs is more scenes of Riza with her dog. XD

[identity profile] adraekh.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
Dude, I didn't say they were Mary Sues. In fact, I quoted the part of the message saying, "Riza is not a Mary Sue," and then I expounded on that point. =|

[identity profile] christ-chexx-4u.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:30 am (UTC)(link)
wait, WHAT? dude. i thought the same thing, up until seeing this secret just now! mind = BLOWN.

[identity profile] twyla-hime.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
I remember the movie, but not that scene. Oddly. I think I only watched parts of it. But yeah, I can see how that would have been the most exciting part of a slow relationship drama taking place in one apartment.

You've certainly piqued the interest of many RDJ fans here.

[identity profile] rushhour.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:31 am (UTC)(link)
Oh no you didn't~ That movie pales in comparison to Shaun of the Dead (same horror-comedy-zombie genre) and is mediocre as a standalone. Plus, anyone in L4D+L4D2 > anyone in Zombieland.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
When did I say she was more Sueish than anyone else?

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply that; what I'm saying is that if everyone in the canon has "Sueish" traits, then I don't think that those traits are Sueish in that canon. For a more extreme example, one character in, say, Ouran, being able to perform alchemy would be extremely Sueish, but since alchemy is an accepted part of FMA, it's not a Sueish trait there.

That's not a good thing. It means that most of the characters are underdeveloped and not sufficiently flawed.

I disagree, but I think this is mainly a matter of taste. (For example, I really enjoy Cardcaptor Sakura, in which none of the characters have significant flaws, but I can understand why someone would dislike it for that reason.) I also think that Riza does have flaws, chief among them being her reliance on Roy; this is both her weakness and her strength.

This is a very troublesome issue for me

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
On the one hand, it seems morally reprehensible. Certainly if the OP is WISHING suffering on someone, I can't get on board with that.

But on the other hand, people can't control their kinks, and sometimes people find real-life awful things hot. I know someone who was disgusted with hirself for being turned on by an article about a victim of gang-rape, and I can't feel anything but fiercely protective of this friend, especially because of how much ze beat hirself up about it.

I would say, as long as you are aware of how unfortunate or horrible these events are and treat them as such (and, even though I have no airtight argument for it, I would include "refraining from wishing those things to occur IRL" in this category), then you are doing fine.

This reminds me of that anorexia fetish secret from a few weeks ago. It's easy to tell people that what gets them off is "wrong", but people can't really help what turns them on. It's just a question of how you treat those fantasies, and of course being a good person to the outside world.

[identity profile] rushhour.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
Ahahah yes, I can totally see that. Now find someone for Nick!

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
When you say "All the characters are a little sueish" it completely waters down the use of the term "sueish." Any given Twilight character has "sueish" tendencies, for example. Does FMA portray it's characters in such a lovingly purple prose-y way? Of course not!

Also, flaws don't make a character- too humans aren't perfect, but too many flaws just gives you someone unlikeable. Or Yoki.

[identity profile] soymade.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
Definitely agreed.

[identity profile] christ-chexx-4u.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 06:33 am (UTC)(link)
seriously. my mind immediately interpreted 'something happened' into 'sendhil walked in on quinto/pine and got jealous'. and then i realized just how much f!s has corrupted me.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
I don't really recall a point where all the characters gushed over her looks anywhere in canon. And you think she's boring, but other's don't. Have you thought about why you think she's sueish and boring? By any chance, do you tend to think that way about female characters in other canons?
