I still prefer the first Willy Wonka, but I do love Tim. His films have been a hit and miss lately, but his Willy Wonka is kinda cute. I really didn't like the music so much, and that's coming from a Danny Elfman fan.

[identity profile] xenafox.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 10:55 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Tim Burton's style, but will forever question what the hell made him dress Wonka like a child molester.

I appreciate the older film as classic but...I do prefer Burton's. I've read so many of Dahl's books and Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was adapted better under Burton's hands.

Everyone hates Tim Burton? When did the 180 happen?

The hate lately saddens me. I love Tim Burton and always will. Discovering him so late in the game (senior year of high school) was the nod I needed to know what I wanted to do with my life.

Haters to the motherfucking LEFT, y'all.

[identity profile] roxiful.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't hate him, I'm just irritated by seeing the same kind of thing from him over and over.

[identity profile] wordfuzion.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved that movie too, anon! It never ceases to bring a smile to my face when I've had a bad day. :)

And I am another one that enjoys Tim Burton, even with casting Johnny Depp and Helena Bonhman Carter so much. (Dare I hope he'll reuse Alan Rickman for this "Sleeping Beauty" remake? :P ) I'm looking forward to Alice...I have no reason to think it's going to be awful. *shrug* I think people dislike him because they think it's "cool" to go against the grain. Once something becomes popular you always have the haters.

[identity profile] fenm.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
While I like both version, given that Wonka spends years (decades?) alone in his factory with nothing but the Oompa Loompas for company, I can't help but think that he'd act more like Depp's version than Wilder's. But then, looking for realistic psychology in a Roald Dahl work is like looking for accurate physics in a Michael Bay movie...

[identity profile] sparklywalls.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I thought 'Charlie...' captured the fucked up tone of Dahl's books more than 'Willy...' which is just too nicey-nice in places for my liking even though I do still enjoy it, just not as a direct comparison to the book. I've had loads of arguments with friends over this and have realise that people will never agree. I personally feel the latter film would've been closer to Dahl's vision but without being able to ask him we'll never know!

Having said that Burton's version had things that pissed me off. Like adding Willy's dad into the story.

I don't hate Tim Burton I'm just getting a little bored with him. I'll still go see his next offering however, if only because I like that it isn't a direct retelling of the plot in 'Alice in Wonderland'. It became more interesting to me when I found that out.

A+

[identity profile] omwos.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I love that movie too and pretty much all of Tim Burton's stuff. I say pretty much because I haven't seen everything of his, but what I've seen I've enjoyed. I don't understand the sudden and random hate for him. But whatever, you like what you like and don't let anyone influence your opinion.

[identity profile] quinnzel.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Wow, OP. Wow. This secret just made my whole day. I love Tim Burton and this is my perfect movie. If I could hug you, I would. :D

[identity profile] missing-mile-15.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I prefer the original movie, mostly because of Wonka's snarkiness. But I still love Tim Burton to death, and will see all his movies even if I know I won't like it.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2010-02-04 11:58 pm (UTC)(link)
I am so goddamn sick of Burton haters. If I really thought his films had slipped in quality or if his personality was as indulgent and whiny as people claim, I'd probably shut up, but really. I honestly think half of 'em (not all) are just being contrary for the sake of it because it's not ~cool~ to like the same thing for more than fifteen minutes. (And I paid $60 to attend a panel discussion with him before Sweeney Todd and he's totally nice and laidback.) I love that movie, I think he and Johnny work wonderfully together and their friendship is adorably sweet and loving. (The godfather story KILLS me. DED.) Haters can suck it.

[identity profile] llrael.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
I love Tim Burton. Am I doing something wrong?

That said, I've never seen the first film because Gene Wilder scared me too much. Whereas JD is adorable.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-05 12:05 am (UTC)(link)
IA. And I love Charlie and the Chocolate Factory waaaay more than Willy Wonka. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory was way more faithful to the book, and also lacked "Cheer Up Charlie," thank god.

[identity profile] miss-snarky.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:36 am (UTC)(link)
Screw them. I like a lot of Burton's stuff, and I love Johnny Depp's acting, so I'm not ashamed to like any of it. I'm hoping Alice will be as good as I want it to be, because I adore the book, and the Syfy miniseries was fabulous...

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:43 am (UTC)(link)
I think Burton is sometimes overrated and I don't think chocolate Factory was his best work, but I certainly enjoyed it.

[identity profile] ms-cucumber.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 12:56 am (UTC)(link)
I loved Burton's Chocolate Factory but overall, I find his work hit or miss. Like, I though Big Fish was dull.

[identity profile] mutantjules.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 01:26 am (UTC)(link)
I really dig that movie, but not gonna lie, there were things I expected from it that he kind of bollocksed up. I didn't expect some of the things I liked most about it, though, so I guess it evens out.

and I've loved Burton pretty much all my life. I also don't mind that he reuses actors because they all work well together to tell the stories Tim wants to tell. It's the cool thing to hate on him now but watch Alice be TOTALLY AWESOME and have all the haters be all "I really ~loved him all along~!"

though being honest, in a totally unnecessary postscript, I'm excited for Alice but not as much as I should be. I just rewatched Jan Svankmajer's version and there is almost no goddamn way Burton's topping that.

I LOVE Burton. Charlie was one of my favorite movies he did next to Corpse Bride.

That and...DAMNIT I LOVEEEE it when he does movies with Danny Elfman.

FFFF Burton/Elfman- my composer/director OTP <333

MY FAVORITE MOVIE, TOO

[identity profile] ceylon-tae.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 03:59 am (UTC)(link)
Or, at least it was, until I saw Dragon Hunters. Now Charlie's 2nd place.

When it first came out, it was my first favorite movie since The Little Mermaid,
and on my 18th birthday, when I could have seen any movie I wanted, I took my party to go see Charlie.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE.

[identity profile] onydanse.livejournal.com 2010-02-05 04:15 am (UTC)(link)
I'm glad I'm not alone in this. I really liked Burton's version and couldn't stand the original Gene Wilder one, which is apparently the inverse of how most everyone else felt.
