I know what you mean. I couldn't get over the new voices either. But there was a lot of other stuff about Brotherhood that really fucking bothered me too, I ended up dropping it.

[identity profile] graziaplena.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:03 am (UTC)(link)
Could you elaborate on what bothered you? I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet and want to know if it's worth my time...

[identity profile] adraekh.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
The pacing is horrid, from what I've seen (admittedly, only up to Episode 15). The background music makes me cringe, and there's one scene in which I find Edward to be very OOC compared to how he's portrayed in the manga. And, of course, the voice actors, in particular Roy's. He's too breathy, IMHO, and half the time I just want to strangle him because he can't carry a scene very well. (To be fair, though, I do adore Ling's VA, and both Romi Paku and Rie Kugimiya have improved, I think.) The animation also drops in quality very quickly after the first episode, and I find most of the character designs to be too warped. Ed's eyes freak me out most of the time; it's only the occasional shot that doesn't make me want to laugh. I have the same issues with Roy's design, though maybe to a lesser extent than Ed's.

On the other hand, I do like most of the OPs? And I hear there's lots of fanservice, if you're into that stuff?

But generally, no, I don't think it's worth your time. But it's ultimately your call. I don't want to rain on the parade and all. *g*

From your icon, I can guess that you're a pretty big manga fan. So you'll probably find it entertaining, if nothing else. It's not always the case, but many of the people who haven't been able to get into it are those who find it way too different from the first anime, or who didn't particularly like the plot or tone of the manga to begin with.

Of course, you may not like it if you're expecting it to be 100% faithful 100% of the time.

I'd recommend watching the dub. Most of the vocal performances are considerably more subtle, and they've even managed to make some of the silliest moments somewhat less...awkwardly unfunny. They've even kept some of the first anime's characterization so far--especially with the Elric brothers-- which is a big plus for me (and a big minus if you're a manga purist). I usually have to force myself to sit through Brotherhood, but I actually enjoyed the first episode of the dub.

Of course, this only works if you actually liked the dub voices. So, if you didn't--ignore everything I've just said.

[identity profile] sableambiguity.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 04:52 am (UTC)(link)
I second this. But that's also because in the dubbed version they kept Vic and Travis on, and they're amazing. /bias

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-02-19 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I usually hate dubs but I'll give this a try. :)

[identity profile] sakurabatou.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
I had a hard time adjusting to the voices, too. (I loved Ookawa and Neya >:) But it gets better once they're done recapping what the first series did, and Paku Romi is an amazing Ed as always.

[identity profile] nendo-chan.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:31 am (UTC)(link)
I hate everything about Brotherhood, so no worries, OP. xD

[identity profile] foofighter0234.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:49 am (UTC)(link)
BAW BAW CRY SOME MOAR.

[identity profile] vieillerie.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Sorry, OP. Personally I fucking hated Ohkawa as Roy (and I do like the guy, I just think his voice didn't suit him in the least) and I love how Mikishin plays him. I also like Orikasa better. And I think Kugi is doing a much better job this time.
I'm sorry if it doesn't work for you, but for me the voice acting is the best part of Brotherhood.

[personal profile] ammchan 2010-02-19 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
Wait, do you mean the Funi dub? Wasn't Al the only new voice? I know Ed and Roy were at least the same...eh, I really liked all of them, anyway.

And I find Brotherhood's beginning to be much more engaging than the beginning of the original anime.

But that's just me.

[identity profile] threepwillow.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 03:18 am (UTC)(link)
Al and Scar are the only voices that changed, but I think OP is referring to the Japanese. It threw me for a second, too. I was like, "Well sorry we couldn't keep Aaron prepubescent forever, geesh!"

So to the OP: Watch the dub, it won't let you down? lol idk

It bothered me at first, too. I got over it after a few episodes. I hope you can get over it too, but it can be very frustrating to adjust.

[identity profile] angathol.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 02:57 am (UTC)(link)
I stopped watching two episodes in because I didn't think I could get through the same rehashed stuff before new content came in.

"LOLOL YOU'RE AWFULLY SHORT"
"I'M NOT SHORT"
"OH I THOUGHT AL WAS THE FULLMETAL ALCHEMIST BECAUSE HE'S BIG AND METAL AND YOU'RE SHORT HERPDERP"
"I'M NOT SHORT"

repeat ad nauseum

Oh my god, seriously. Talk about beating a dead horse with that joke. IT'S NOT FUNNY AFTER THE FIRST TWENTY TIMES, GUYS. Especially when the first twenty times are ALL IN THE SAME EPISODE.

[identity profile] bleed-peroxide.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
...I feel like I'm in the minority because I'm actually enjoying Brotherhood. (._.')

I fell in love with the series through the first anime, so that'll always be my favorite regardless. But while the series starts off a bit slow, it DOES get better. The main issue with the beginning is that they have to get through all the shit that you saw in the first anime, so it's paced very quickly and they don't spend as much time fleshing out the characters because - I'm guessing - the creators went under the assumption that someone watching Brotherhood had either seen the first anime or read the manga. Once you get past SPOILER SPOILER , Brotherhood gets a lot more interesting.

I didn't watch much of the original anime in Japanese - I loved the dub and just stuck with that, watching the Japanese when I remember to - so I can't say I noticed a real difference in the voice actors. D:

[identity profile] adraekh.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
It must suck constantly seeing people (er, including me) putting down Brotherhood. I sort of feel like I owe you an apology. =|

I just started watching this show (baby's first anime ^^) and I'm enjoying it too. I've never been into amine and I was plodding along through the first few eps mostly because I want to improve my Japanese but I gotta say, once that thing with that SPOILER SPOILER happened, I may be a teensy bit hooked. (Was up until 4 am last night and got to ep 21.)

(And I may be in the minority but I find Roy's voice kind of hot.)

[identity profile] duowolf.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 04:45 am (UTC)(link)
How anyone could hate Shinichiro Miki's voice work is beyond me. The man is a god.

[identity profile] planetes.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 05:52 am (UTC)(link)
I wish they'd at least kept Neya because that would have been a Kurz/Mao reunion

[identity profile] tod-hollykim.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 05:59 am (UTC)(link)
Are you talking about the Japanese cast or the Americzn voice cast? Because if it's the American there are only two new voice actors. The ones who do Alphonse and Scar.

Other than that, they are the same.

OP

(Anonymous) 2010-02-19 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
I meant the Japanese voice actors. Now I realize I should have mentioned that. -.-

[identity profile] akai_senshi.livejournal.com 2010-02-19 11:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Most of the voice actors are the same in the dub. Oddly, the J version has the most change.
