However I can understand the desire to not have someone rain on your parade.

And I think that your (hypothetical) desire for pure, giggly squee is less important than serious issues, like representation of Asians in the mainstream media.

the community is meant to be a welcoming place for fans so that attitude doesn't fit entirely.

Really? I thought it was a place for fan, all fans, even the ones who dislike the movie.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:56 pm (UTC)(link)
lol, if you're a hater you're not a fan.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-24 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
You can dislike certain aspects of a movie(/book/tv show) while still being a fan of others. It's not an all-or-nothing proposition.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:06 am (UTC)(link)
I know.

But the people calling for a boycott and saying anyone who watches the movie is a bad person, and turning every discussion about the movie into a talk about how it's bad and evil and wrong don't seem to get that...

I tend to agree with eilonnwy on this one. While I'm not saying the producers made a good move with the casting (far from it!), I can understand being excited at seeing the new representation, despite its flaws. While I do understand that people are kind of jumping on this movie as the be all and end all of whitewashing, it's not. It's one movie out of many that are going to do something similar, even if less dramatically.

I do think that the fans have done a good job raising awareness over the issue with the movie. However, squeeing over one film, which admittedly falls prey to whitewashing, is not going to reverse any influence or knowledge that was started because of the protest of said movie.

In conclusion, one can be simultaneously excited for the movie as a whole and disapprove of the casting choice.

Who's saying that it is? Now, I'm not exactly up to date on all this, but most of the criticism I've seen focuses on how this is part of a larger pattern of whitewashing and yellowface in the movies.

In conclusion, one can be simultaneously excited for the movie as a whole and disapprove of the casting choice.

Sure, but I don't see what this has to do with my point. Unless you're in a community that forbids it (which doesn't seem to be the case here), people are allowed to express any opinion they want. Even if it makes you sad, even if it makes your soul cry precious unicorn tears. Your feelings are not more important than mine.

Wow, your observations and experiences are indicative of everyone's. Thank goodness we've got that sorted out.

Your feelings are not more important than mine.

Your feelings are not more important than anyone else's either, bb.

Of course they're not. But they are the only ones I'm qualified to comment on.

Your feelings are not more important than anyone else's either, bb.

Never said they were.

jsyk, if you say people are allowed to express their feelings and opinions, you have to apply that to others, too. People can disagree with you and feel hurt by your accusations.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
What accusations are those again?

...most of the criticism I've seen focuses on how this is part of a larger pattern of whitewashing and yellowface in the movies.

Perhaps I was mistaken, if you're correct the guilt of going to see this movie appears disproportionate. Also, because the individual decides to see one movie in spite of poor decisions that does not necessarily mean they're horrible racist people as some comments make them out to be.

Even if it makes you sad, even if it makes your soul cry precious unicorn tears. Your feelings are not more important than mine.

I rather thought your point was about being able to deal with people disagreeing and expressing their opinions in a community that allows it, whereas this seems to be on the lines of flaming.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
Perhaps I was mistaken, if you're correct the guilt of going to see this movie appears disproportionate.

Why? Are you saying that it's okay for Avatar to use yellow-face, because other movies have?

Also, because the individual decides to see one movie in spite of poor decisions that does not necessarily mean they're horrible racist people as some comments make them out to be.

What comments, exactly, would that be. Because saying that we should boycott the movie is not the same thing as 'you're all horrible racist people.'

I rather thought your point was about being able to deal with people disagreeing and expressing their opinions in a community that allows it, whereas this seems to be on the lines of flaming.

You're right and I apologize. But all this stuff, where people say that racism is okay if they really, really want to see it offends me, on a personal level.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:34 am (UTC)(link)
Good job, internet troll. Keep proving your point and make a mockery of people who actually are concerned about racism in one swoop.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:41 am (UTC)(link)
Not a troll and not sure what point I'm supposed to be proving.

(Anonymous) 2010-02-25 12:44 am (UTC)(link)

They almost had me convinced, ha.

Why? Are you saying that it's okay for Avatar to use yellow-face, because other movies have?

I don't understand what you're trying to go with here. We both agree that white washing is wrong, but that it's a problem in the media in general. We have both agreed that this movie is not the be all and end all of racism. I'm saying that I can see where someone could decide to see it, despite their personal opinions on race, because of other factors, but you say that if they go to see this movie they are saying that racism is okay?

I understand that you can't speak much louder than with your dollar, and acknowledge that a boycott might be the best course of action to make a statement about the casting of this particular movie; however, not every person is willing to make that sacrifice. I can't really comment on that, as it's up to the individual. That does not mean they are "Saying it's okay for [Hollywood] to use yellow-face," or "Saying racism is okay." There are other ways to protest and there are other movies to boycott as you pointed out.

I'm sorry if I have offended you in these comments, but in my humble opinion, raising the awareness of racism in Hollywood is far more important than boycotting any single film.

Do you wear any clothes made by people in sweatshops? Do you have any actual way of knowing for certain that you don't? Have you ever eaten food that may not have been grown ethically? Do you ever drive cars, spoken civilly with people who've held views you find morally reprehensible? Have you ever worked for a company that isn't completely perfect?

Unless you can honestly say no to all of those things, you have no reason or right to be ~offended~ by someone who wants to see a movie they acknowledge as being racist.

Implying that they think their desire for pure, giggly squee is of equal or more importance than serious issues like representation of Asians in the mainstream media solely because they mentioned they can understand why some people might not like to have someone rain on their parade. It's like assuming someone doesn't care about ending poverty because they want to watch the Olympics without people talking about how wasteful it is all the time. I know, how dare people want to relax and enjoy something without worrying about all the bad stuff in the world all the time.
