I thought they were referencing that most of the time species that aren't closely related can't transmit diseases like that. Perhaps those that are somewhat related....but aliens? Doubtful.

Well, this is pretty much a YMMV sort of thing. A lot of people are uncomfortable with just base assuming that STDs don't exist, or that women never get pregnant unintentionally. Also, in the case of anal, sanitation probably comes into play a bit, regardless of whether or not the participants have STDs or not. While some fandoms may have settings that make condoms impossible or at least hard to find (historical stuff, LOTR, ect), in most fandoms it's both possible and easy to just write, "He slipped on a condom," thereby bypassing those problems.

On the other hand, some people find it to be tacked on and/or don't want to think about those sort of repercussions in their PWP, hence the YMMV. XD

I personally tire of fics that leave a lot of things like this. Especially lubrication in a slash fic. Since when do males have self-lubricating asses? I guess some type of alien race can, but still =/ any human male penetration will need lubrication.

As for condoms, realism can be sexy, if handled well. Just like irl putting condoms on can be sexy, it can be written sexy as well.

IDK, I think it's good that safe sex is is being depicted in pop culture (if you can call fan fiction that.) How often do you see characters in movies put on condoms? I agree with the above poster that showing couples consistently practicing safe sex without it totally killing the mood will be a more effective PSA than anything else the government can think up.

Usually I'm very for safe-sex, but I think you have a point here. Different species probably can't get each other pregnant (horses and donkeys notwithstanding) and in most cases wouldn't be able to communicate STDs either.

PEOPLE INCLUDE CONDOMS IN THEIR PORN?! WHERE?! I have only seen a condom being used in fic ONCE in my 8+ish years of reading smut and would KILL to see more fics include condoms. If you're annoyed, pick other porn. There's a fuckton out there that doesn't have condoms at all (pun intended). More power to those who include condoms, I say! Especially since kids either A, never pay attention in health class or B, are told "DON'T HAVE SEX OR YOU WILL GET PREGNANT AND DIE". More or less.

OP can't write to save her life, but did mean that most of alien species we're talking about are from high-technology future, so why would they even have STD unless it's space herpes, but who wouldn't want one?
Or some all-powerful mythological creature who can bend time\ fight monsters with fireballs\can be killed only with some magical sword and can't deal with sexual disease, really? Oh shi~ now I want a fic =)
