The hardest part of doing any unpleasant task (for me at least) is getting started! So start in the laziest, slowest way possible to ease yourself into it. If you have a paper to write, fire up a Word document and open some fandom nonsense in another window. Work on the paper for ten minutes, and reward yourself with five minutes of fun stuff. At the end of an hour, you'll have done something productive and something entertaining at the same time. YMMV, but it works for me.

Y'know, if it wasn't for the fact that I'm boring and don't drink or do drugs, I could swear I made this secret and just can't remember it, because I've finally come to terms with that as well.

I finally realized that fandom doesn't need constant attention and nothing bad will happen if I take a break for a few days. It's taken awhile, but I've improved and am feeling happier for it. Even the good fandoms need to be stepped away from sometimes.

If you need some sort of rolemodel, I took Channel Awesome contributors on as mine. It's silly, I know, but considering that Lindsay Ellis has a lot of school work to deal with she still finds time to make Nostalgia Chick videos. I wish I could learn to manage my time like that.

That said, I'm not a fan of the whole tragic romance trope, and find that thinking of it as a love story between Rick and Renault where Rick's ex girlfriend shows up and creates some chaos that Rick has to deal with and which pushes Rick and Renault to actually make a stand about the war instead of burying their heads in the sand is a more satisfying narrative for me personally.

No, I understand that. And when there's tons of "fuck this" and "fuck that" in fandoms where there is little to no swearing, I agree that it feels strange. Spongebob does not say things like "Burn in hell, you fucking cunt." But OP didn't specify that, which annoyed me. Many fandoms have characters that swear A LOT and to not have them use "fuck" every few sentences would seem weird and out of character.
