IA, it was a beautiful piece of fiction and its deletion was unnecessary.

Don't think you should have addressed the issue this early, though.

What happened?

nvm; 122 gave me a name, and it seems to have been something along the lines of the SPN Big Bang fail?

Because of the epic fail of an SPN J2 BB fic with a similar premise. This (http://amazonziti.livejournal.com/52274.html?format=light) is a good round up of that whole explosion. When people in the SPN fandom that were also in to the Pinto fandom saw that a Pinto fic with Haiti as the backdrop had been out before all that mess and wasn't called out on there was a bit more of an uproar and so the author deleted the fic. From my understanding and what I heard about the fic though is that it wasn't anywhere near the levels of fail as the J2 fic.

Though if I'm wrong about any of this, someone else feel free to correct me.

I love coming back to that round up, it has some really awesome links.

From the author's posts here (http://beedlebarg.livejournal.com/41603.html) and here (http://beedlebarg.livejournal.com/41316.html), there were definitely some problematic aspects in the fic and the author handled the situation really well.

Edit: Belated advice, try not to venture too deep into the comments on those posts /facepalms hard

The writer of that fic was a classy individual who did something incredibly classy when she acknowledged the criticism.

Why do her fans have to make her look so fucking shitty? She deserves better than you.

THIS

except with less attacks towards the anon, but basically what you said

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 07:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Seconded.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:05 pm (UTC)(link)
privileged, privileged, privileged. It's very easy to say, so of course it'll be said.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)
You know what else is easy to say? 'privileged'

I agree with the OP. Calling someone "privileged" as a way to shut them up and shut them down makes you a hypocrite.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 09:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I was agreeing as well.

Let me guess, you're white and poor, but not so poor that you can't use the internet.

lol

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:33 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm poor and white and yet I'm able to use internet. School and libraries are so awesome.

lol

. ← the point

you

Unless you were being sarcastic, in which case I apologize.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 10:01 pm (UTC)(link)
...But not so poor that you get kicked out of said schools and libraries, amirite?

I only know very little about the fic and the wank so I'm not touching that but I definitely hate it when people throw around the word privileged all the time....

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 08:35 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not "throwing it around" if it's true.

[identity profile] jlh.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)
If you "only know very little about the fic and the wank" then how can you determine if people are "throwing around" the word privileged?

I had no idea it had been deleted - I'm really glad I read it, because it was a fantastic fic.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
can we please move on? it was a piece of good writing, true. it did lots of good, that's also true. she had her reasons to delete it, sorry, there's nothing you can do about it. what is, is. again, move on. this secret, along with 122, aren't helping...

i have been, and always shall be on the author's side.

(Anonymous) 2010-06-26 09:40 pm (UTC)(link)
YANA. I almost wrote a secret about this, but there's no point.

[identity profile] sochitelya.livejournal.com 2010-06-26 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
This isn't that J2 fic right? Don't tell me there's two different Haiti racefailers in different fandoms.

I've just been reading around on this one myself, and yes, there are two different Haiti racefailers in different RPS fandoms. This one is a Pinto fic, and the J2 fail caused the author to admit to her own fail, post an apology and delete the fic. Class act, imo.

Wow, failers who take responsibility for their fail are a rare thing indeed.

I am once again fretting over the fact that I once wrote a fic about two white guys meeting during the Portuguese Colonial War and, not falling in love but definitely becoming emotionally invested in each other. Unfortunately, it's canon. That is how they met in canon and is how they first became emotionally invested in each other. I just wrote a shortfic that elaborated on it. I feel like I should've taken more sideswipes at canon while writing it. I don't know. I neither want to be party to the fail nor to declare that aspect of canon out of bounds ficwise on the grounds of its inherent failziness. Gah :(

[identity profile] rmarques.livejournal.com 2010-06-27 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
The setting wasn't the major problem for a lot of people, the way the non-white characters were written was. Like how the Haitian people talking in their language were said to be "gibbering". If you avoided stuff like that, I don't think you should attract much/any negative attention that the canon hasn't already (if it even did get some negative attention, anyway).

ETA: Aaaand apparently this refers to something else other than what I'm thinking, so feel free to disregard this comment. >_> <_<
