...If you really hold that self-centered, entitled brat as a role model, I pity anyone in real life who is stuck dealing with you.

I love how your type always post anonymously!
It's so cute!

...because children are perfect, and every character in anything should be perfect and have no flaws?

I mean, this is assuming you were correct, which you are not.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:45 am (UTC)(link)
Sadly there is this standard for Aang that doesn't apply to the other characters and much of what people condemn Aang for is exaggerated because he gets in the way of a ship, isn't the fandom-worshipped Zuko, didn't kill the Fire Lord, etc. Zuko has flaws and issues that IMO are far worse than Aang's, but that doesn't stop people (myself included) from thinking that by the end of the series he became a sort of role model.

This fandom has folks who eagerly find any excuse to demonize Aang's every flaw. But part of Aang's charm is he isn't perfect, that despite him being the is still very much a 12 year old boy trying to navigate the difficult path of growing up as well.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 11:30 am (UTC)(link)
The difference is that Zuko was forced to learn from his mistakes, overcome his flaws, and become a better person as a result. Aang never had to do the same. He was never wrong, as far as the story was concerned. If he's so flawed and not perfect and that's supposedly what makes him awesome, then why doesn't his fandom (and the story) acknowledge that instead of excusing or brushing off every mistake he makes?

To me, Zuko will always be the real hero of the tale. Because unlike Aang, he acted like one.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
Acted like one? Let's see, he was rude, snappish, disrespectful, and ungrateful. He mocked whatever he didn't understand and if something didn't go his way or if he got contradictory advice to what he wanted to hear, he snapped back with insults and verbal abuse. He was selfish, easily manipulated, and a bit of a hypocrite. He often made things worse than they needed to be, betrayed those who truly cared about him or were willing to give him a chance. His pride and stubbornness risked the safety of others.

And many of these traits he displayed right up until end of the series. Zuko is hardly a hero above Aang. He was lucky to have people like his uncle and Aang who were willing to look past his garbage and forgive him repeatedly. But despite all that Zuko is still a good person and a good character.

Aang was wrong many times - his insecurities led him to hide the map which he then admitted to and was willing to accept the consequences for, he was impatient and burned Katara which he was clearly upset over and apologized for, he easily got into trouble due to his desire to be normal or be loved. He can be flighty and childish at times. His emotions were at times a problem when he couldn't handle them.

The fandom doesn't demonize Aang, which is the difference. People see he has flaws and much like the Zuko fans, choose to accept the bad and look forward to the good. You seem to nitpick everything Aang does and hold everything against the character including the fandom's liking and enjoyment of Aang. And Aang is a kid and he has a wisdom and spirituality to him. He is both of those things. There is no dodging that. He saved Zuko at the end of the Blue Spirit despite the fact he knew Zuko was an enemy but he had to ask the question: Could we be friends? He saved Zuko again in the Seige of the North when everyone else was willing to leave him to freeze. He knew that getting revenge on the man who killed her mother was not what would help Katara heal. He readily put aside the wrongs done to him by Zuko and welcomed him once he recognized he and Zuko had the same feelings about fire bending, he saw the good in the fire nation kids and knew that he was going to have to defeat the fire lord, but that opinions and attitudes had to change too.

The things people admire about Aang are his ability to be open to others, his notions of forgiveness, seeing the good in others, willingness to help others, his loyalty to his beliefs and culture, his loyalty to his friends and those he loves, his kindness, his belief that not everything can or should be solved with violence, his ability to stand up for what he believes despite the pressure from others, his respect for other cultures and people, etc. And if those are the things the sercret poster and other fans choose to see in Aang, then I say good for them.

I would like Aang more if the series acted like wasn't perfect, but by the end, it kind of comes off like "everything Aang does is automatically right because Aang does it" and it really bugs me that he never apologizes for the mistakes he makes, especially to Katara and Sokka. I mean, take the EIP kiss -- did he ever talk to Katara about it, and say, "Look, I'm sorry for trying to force you into kissing me. It was wrong and you deserve better"? And in S1, when he steals the map. Yeah, it's obvious that he was wrong and he knows he's wrong, but he never apologizes to Katara or Sokka for doing it, and that's a big deal. Just knowing that you messed up isn't enough: you have to also be able to swallow your pride and admit it, out loud, to the people you wronged, which is something the series never makes Aang learn, in spite of having plenty of reasons and opportunities to teach him.

I wish they'd taken the time at the finale to have someone -- such as Mai, or Sokka, or maybe even Toph -- argue with him about not killing Ozai, because, let's face it, they would have a problem with him leaving Ozai alive. Even if you think Aang did the right thing, and even if he stuck to his guns, he should have had to argue his side -- again, out loud, to the people it most affected. I wish they'd given us that and left it somewhat up to the viewer whether it was the right thing to do, and they could also show Aang growing up somewhat, willing to face the consequences of his choice maturely, which I didn't feel like he was. Unfortunately, the show seems to think that there won't be any consequences for not killing Ozai, which, realistically, there would be, and Aang would have to answer for them, whether he was right or wrong.

I just felt like the series failed with Aang's character by not letting him grow. Sozin's Comet Aang is much the same as Season 1 Aang, you know?

...Holy long-winded rant, Batman! Sorry about that. And please don't think I'm attacking you -- I'm not! -- I just feel like we saw different things in Aang's character.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 03:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh I don't think that. But zuko never apologized to aang for making fun of his dead culture. Zuko made fun of Aang and forgiveness and that is all he wanted from Aang and was what he was, seeking from Katara. Katara never apologized to sokka for that comment she made about their mother. I would have liked to have seen them do that.

And then you have Zuko who apologizes repeatedly for making the same mistake over and over again. How many times did he apologize to his uncle for betraying him or hurting him only to do it again.

I honestly don't remember if Aang apologized for te map, but he admitted to it and accepted that he screwed up, accepted the consequences, and didn't stop Sokka and Katara from leaving him. And they all worked it out. Especially since he went to such great lengths to get her necklace back. The nice thing about the show was that they worked things out and forgiveness was implied without actually having to hear people say I'm sorry over and over. I would have liked to see Zuko pull Aang aside and truly apologize to him for everything and to actually show some respect for Aang's culture and beliefs, but it never happened.

And aang did argue his side, but his friends refused to listen to him or even accept that he had a differing opinion. And in the end none of them could kill either. Neither Sokka, Suki, or Toph killed Ozai. Zuko didn't have him executed. Zuko didn't kill his sister. Katara didn't kill Ozai or Azula. If Ozai was such a threat, then even if Aang took his bending away and refused to do the deed himself, then why didn't Zuko order Ozai's execution or why didn't one of the other characters finish Ozai off if they disagreed so strongly with Aang's position. Instead, we saw Zuko readily use the mercy Aang showed his father (which. zuko mocked) to get info on his momma and to maybe experience a life change like Zuko did.

Having just watched the episode involving the map, he attempted to apologize and explain his reasons but Katara and Sokka spoke over him, shutting him down before he could. They then proceeded to leave. Later, they were the ones that decided to forgive him as they realized that he needed them more than their father right now.

Aang's apology was never needed by them.

Um, when was the last time you actually watched the first season? Because that kid is definitely not the same Aang who faced Ozai at the end.

[identity profile] dorknessrising.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 11:24 am (UTC)(link)
Except that Aang is treated as though he is perfect, both by the story and the fandom. He never suffers the repercussions of screwing up, or even when he does, somebody is around to convince him he did the right thing anyway. I don't think a character who constantly runs from responsibility, refuses to admit when he's wrong, and won't listen to anyone that says things he doesn't want to hear is hardly a good role model.

I'm also tired of fandom calling him all-knowing and wise, yet brushing off all of his more serious mistakes with "but he's just a kid!" Pick one, because you can't have both. You can't claim he's a mature and wise adult, and then just excuse him as a child for his mistakes whenever it's convenient.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 02:52 pm (UTC)(link)
So he never suffered or felt horrible for running away from the Southern Air Temple? We didn't get beaten over the head with how awful it made him feel that he'd abandoned his people? No, Aang isn't perfect. Far from it. He's immature, yeah, terribly so, and he can't seem to wrap his mind around non-Airbender beliefs -- that is to say, he can't even fathom the idea of taking a life if it comes down to it. He goes into RAEG, but it's made to look okay because he's emotional and a child, etc. And none of that is right. Yeah, that sucks. But you can't forget something as fundamental to his character as the fact that he very actively regrets his having abandoned his people when it came time to grow up. That's the ultimate punishment, is knowing he was a coward a hundred years ago.

Does that make him a good role model? I don't know. That's up to each individual. Zuko does nasty things in the show, too. He's disrespectful in S1. I don't think those are traits that should be emulated. But his overall strength is inspiring, just like the things Aang believes -- whether or not he succeeds in putting them to practice -- are admirable. The fact that they're both so flawed that fandom can choose to go one way or the other with them just means that they were written as human beings. How many people do you know who get lauded for being so great when in reality they're selfish brats? That's sort of the case here. And tbh I'm glad that neither Aang nor Zuko are that perfect.

He wasn't treated like he was perfect, which is precisely why Katara kept getting angry at him. Didn't you pay attention? Who is the one blinded by their desire to see something that doesn't exist, hmmmm?

[identity profile] siriuslynow.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 03:38 pm (UTC)(link)

I am struggling to find examples of this. The most I can come up with is the EIP kiss, but even then, he knew he did wrong, and felt shame and embarassment over what he did.
