technically though, you probably have cause you're a woman. (maybe not on the same level as non-whites, but sexism is still very real people.)

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I am a white British woman. I can say hand on heart I have never experienced sexism.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
you have. you just didn't realize it was sexism at the time. or didn't realize it was happening (men making comments about you/your body that you couldn't hear, etc)
and even if you were a special case, your experience hardly speaks for all women.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
I think I'm a special case, then.

So you've never had a man perform a "gentlemanly act" for you? Like hold that door that you--as a woman--shouldn't be holding/opening a jar you can possibly get open/insisting on carrying an object that--while a little heavy or cumbersome, is still manageable.

Because while they're all seemingly wonderful gestures that the majority of women aren't going to argue having performed (I don't), they're still inherently sexist. At work, I can't go five feet with a big, awkward box without some guy asking me to let him help, or a superior of mine barking at one of the men to, "Get that for her...!" even after I tell them that I'm perfectly capable and carry on my merry way. My male coworker could be carrying the same box five minutes later, and no one even blinks or offers to help him.

It's just not always about being looked over for a job or catcalls on the street. It's the idea that women shouldn't (or shouldn't have to) do certain things while men should.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
ngl, I enjoy a bit of chivalry. But it does annoy me when it's done because the man feels it NEEDS to be done for the woman. At the moment, there is a guy who is trying to "woo" me (I suppose you'd call it that). His idea of wooing is not only opening doors for me, but helping me out of cars, helping me down stairs, giving me his coat when he thinks I might be cold, and so on.

It's like, "dude, I can do these things by myself. Don't make me feel like I'm incapable"

Nope :)

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
You don't *as a woman* hold the door for other people coming in or out of a shop, or help someone carrying a lot of things when you aren't carrying anything?

I think people missed the boat on chivalry and "feminism". Don't stop doing nice things for people, just do them regardless of gender.

I usually ask the man to do it, cause I am lazy. IDK maybe I am the sexist one.

in b4 'omgz u cun't be 4real women blah blah blah blah more shit i won't read blah blah'

[identity profile] veronica-rich.livejournal.com 2010-09-18 01:08 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm. I definitely don't think sexism rules my existence, but I have experienced it. (More as a "are you fucking KIDDING me?" reaction on my part, and ignoring the intent - but I did recognize what was trying to be done to me.)

[identity profile] blaanidblaanid.livejournal.com 2010-09-18 06:25 am (UTC)(link)
- sawing wood in a friend's garage to make a frame for a banner. grandfather came out, crossed his arm over his chest, smiled at me, and said, "Wonder how this'll turn out."
- joined wrestling team in high school. forty guys, six girls. constant jokes.
- random guys offering to carry boxes, luggage, etc for me despite being more than capable myself
- being told by my cousins that I'm childish for not liking the color pink or other "girly" colors.
- being told to wear makeup, cross legs, be ladylike

The list goes on and on.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-17 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
this was what i was just thinking.
seriously, the only person who would face no discrimination would be a white, heterosexual, cissexual, catholic, able-bodied, wealthy male whose parents have connections in society.
these people do exist but they are hardly the norm. plus, intersectionality.

[identity profile] fearless-rabbit.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 09:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Cis means that your gender identity matches up with the one you were assigned at birth. It's an antonym for trans.

[identity profile] ryuutchi.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 09:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Someone whose birth gender matches their gender identity. It's the opposite of trans.

CATHOLIC? You're kidding me, right? I've experienced a good share of prejudice about being Catholic. I even had a guy stop a date half way through the evening to take me home because he wouldn't allow himself to become attached to someone "Hell bound."

[identity profile] leafing.livejournal.com 2010-09-17 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
That is some of the most ridiculous bullshit I have ever read right there.

Just try being Catholic in the US as little as 60 years ago. I dare you.

I agree with everything but the Catholic part. There's been a lot of discrimination against Catholicism in the US.
