So you know how you're sort of sad and feel like it's unfair that people in fandom or online are judging you just because you're white and have class privilege and all that stuff? Imagine feeling that way in the rest of your life, in a job interview, walking down the street.

And you probably do, because you're a woman, but you sound like you haven't really dealt with that yet, or how you don't have gender privilege but you do have race privilege. So you know, coming to terms with your privilege? Makes you sad! And then you get over it and you understand better how things are. And maybe after that, you don't make assumptions about other people, either.

I hear that. I'm a young(-ish) straight white male, and I've never felt ostracised for that until I set foot into fandom - at which point some people seem to want to make me a target for purging umpteen years of oppression. As Bart Simpson might say, the ironing is delicious.

A small group of angry trolls use the internet to flame people who share characteristics with those who have power over them in real life, trying to shame them for circumstances beyond their control.

But you have to realize that they're *trolls*. Most of the time they even post anonymously. Don't let them get you down.

(Yes, there are real issues. But the people saying "you are white and your opinion doesn't count" deserve no more courtesy than any other internet troll.)

Honey, your opinions still do and should matter. The point of social justice and whatnot is that your opinions aren't the only ones that matter. The worth of someone and their opinions has nothing to do with their race or orientation or sex or gender. You're lucky to have never suffered prejudice, but that doesn't make you less than someone that did. Your opinions on prejudice might not be as informed as people who have actually suffered it, but if you listen and do your best to understand, you can still have an informed opinion, and that informed opinion will definitely matter.

And don't feel bad about never being discriminated against. NOBODY should be discriminated against, that's the point. So look at your life, see that yeah, it's been impacted for the better by not being the target of prejudice. And that's not bad. That's what everybody should have, and you're in a good place to see how those things are important.

It's not about saying, ok let's discriminate against white people now. It's not about saying, hey, white people have these things that nobody else does, so let's take those things away. It's about seeing that EVERYBODY should have good things like not being a victim of prejudice. So turn around, and do your best to help people who don't have the good things that you have get them too. That's kind of the point.

If you're female, you've probably suffered some prejudice.

As for the rest... well... okay, it's not that your thoughts and opinions are worthless, it's just that someone who's speaking from experience about things like racism and classism and stuff, someone who is disadvantaged in the real world and knows what it's like to face that kind of discrimination from first hand experience, that someone is going to be able to know and understand a lot more about issues of racism and classism, etc, than someone who is privileged would.

Add to that the fact that marginalized people have been made to be quiet and let privileged people tell them what they should think and feel and say for so long, and it becomes pretty important for privileged people to step down and let marginalized people speak up about their experiences instead of talking over them.

Okay, so you haven't seen a reason so far to study the pattern of how sexism affects your life.


Seriously, start first by STUDYING FEMINISM, something you can relate to your own life. (Try to avoid falling into the radical feminist intellectual sinkhole of thinking sexism is the "worst" or overarching oppression in the world, though.) When you begin to understand how sexism functions, more of what you're objecting to now will make sense.

(Note that I'm not saying everything you're complaining about is necessarily defensible, only that it will make more sense.)

Any other problems people point out with your secret are probably going to be largely lost on you at this point if you're not at all familiar with how oppression "works."

people resent luck in others and often attack and attempt to invalidate them, most poc know this only invalidates their own cause to do so in a ~public~ forum (a sad but all too real state of affairs), and so prefer to be in a more inclusive setting, but most of the people online are usually just privileged allies who attack random people online for the "littlest things" they commit all the time irl and online as well, and just pick on you because it makes them feel ~special~ and validated as white people for a brief moment because they can totally say "See, I'm not a bigot! I totally called out this person!"
but all in all if anyone does so to you
forget them.
They're too entrenched in their own smug superiority to really be worth your time.
