Daily dose of trolly racism from fandomsecrets, got it all here.

SCIENTIFIC SKEPTICISM IS RACIST >:CCCCCC

Don't worry, we also think drilling holes in the head to let out evil spirits is equally stupid, and that was big in Western countries.

The man had pain and numbness in his leg so he went to a chiropractor/acupuncturist. Once discovering it was cancer, he decided not to undergo anti-cancer treatment. There doesn't seem to be any indication (at least from the quotes in the secret) that the two were related. So, I don't really understand how "scientific skepticism" really fits here.

If he had gone to a doctor for his leg numbness, they would have explored why his leg was numb rather than just treating the numbness. A doctor might have caught that it was cancer.

I don't know how the health system works in Japan. Relatively speaking, how long would it take to set up the tests in the first place? Or receive the results?

And I'm sorry that I didn't clarify, but what I mean is - do we know for sure he wasn't referred to the chiropractor by a doctor already? Or that he wasn't waiting for results/testing in the first place while having the acupuncture treatment?

... how is this secret racist?
Please explain.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-19 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
The comments, too, really. 'ACUPUNCTURE? WHY THE HELL WOULD HE GET ACUPUNCTURE, THAT SHIT DOESN'T WORK despite the fact that Asians have been using it for several centuries and ANYONE WHO PRACTICES IT IS A QUACK.'

The secret itself pretty much boils down to 'I can't believe he got acupuncture instead of going to a REAL doctor.'

Did that really need an explanation?

We're all well aware that acupuncture has been used for hundreds of years, but that's not going to cut it. To start, "IT'S BEEN USED FOR SEVERAL CENTURIES, IT MUST WORK!" is very poor logic. After all, we used bloodletting for hundreds of years, but I don't see anybody encouraging anyone to use that. If you want to prove something is worth using then show us sited, researched cases that it has worked. Show us the medical science behind how it has worked, after all that's what we did with Tylenol and it's why we know that it will dull pain and potentially harm the liver.

Second, we're not talking about benign cultural difference. We're talking about how people address serious medical issues, and if a cultures' medical methods don't work, then it's basically killing people with inaction. Or worse, killing with toxins. That's a problem.

Except that he wasn't doing acupuncture to cure cancer, he was getting it to stave off pain.
