Just noting that there was a bit of logic-fail in the OP's post, btw....

Satoshi Kon developed a numb leg and received chiropractic and acupuncture treatments. There is no indication of whether he went there on his own, or was sent there by a doctor. (One could conjecture that a numb leg was misinterpreted as a pinched nerve in his back - who knows?)

What is clear is that sometime after these treatments - probably when he did not improve - additional tests were conducted and it was discovered that he had advanced pancreatic cancer.

The OP incorrectly assumed that Kon tried to *treat* the cancer with alternative medicines, when it appears that Kon chose not to attempt any treatment that had a likelihood of ultimately failing - and being both costly and painful along the way.

*nods*

Admittedly, I had no idea about any of this until this secret. So my comment a few hours ago was based upon that secret, before I knew it was advanced pancreatic cancer...ect.

I do have a big problem with people turning to alternative medicines with curable and/or manageable diseases. Modern medicine isn't pretty, but there are too many snake-oil salesmen who would try to convince ailing people that their Hogkins can be cured by an overdose of vitamin C (or whatever).

So I suspected the same thing from the OP's post. Glad to hear that wasn't the case, although as before -- I'm still sorry that he didn't live healthier, longer, and able to produce more art.

Edit: Replying to this with some thought involved because you didn't hide behind an Anon. :D

The only good an overdose of vitamin C has ever done for me was to short-circuit the development of a cold. (Zinc makes me so sick to my stomach.) And there are simply things that homeopathy cannot do, not should it be represented as such - so we're completely in agreement there.

I'm still sorry that he didn't live healthier, longer, and able to produce more art.

Word.

(I never, ever hide. If I won't say something to your face, then I shouldn't be saying it at all.)

Just to answer this precise point: I did not assume he tried to treat the cancer with acupuncture.

He chose acupuncture and chiropractics to deal with pain in his leg and only decided to go see a doctor when he could not walk anymore. This is what angers me: there are people with curable illnesses who waste time seeking "alternative" treatments which simply do not work. When they finally decide to turn to someone with a medical degree, months later, it's often too late to do anything.
I am not saying this was the case for him. But he waited until he couldn't walk anymore to seek medical advice and that's just sad.

*nods* Thank you for the clarification.

But how was he to know that the pain and numbness in his leg (a common symptom of pinched nerves/back problems) was anything worse? How does someone know that a common symptom like numbness heralds a more severe condition rather than a more common one? How do we even know that the doctor wouldn't have sent him to the exact same treatments?

As I mentioned above, my brother went to see his doctor for pain in his back that was debilitating enough that he could not work. It was that same doctor who sent him to chiropractic treatment and PT for six months before the lack of improvement finally started the tests that discovered his cancer.

Now, to your point, there is a chiropractor near me who I actively cannot stand. He fans people's fear of traditional medicine by posting messages outside his office that point out side-effects and risks of medications in the most inflammatory way, and often without context. ("Dyes in MRI turn skin to marble.") Alternative care that isn't willing to work hand in hand with real doctors is an active threat to people's health and welfare.

This 1000%. An honest, legit Alternative Care specialist would never try to wage war on mainstream medicine because that is not putting the client's best interests at heart.
