never watched that show but we need more female characters like this

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 09:11 pm (UTC)(link)
That's revolting no matter what gender you are.

[identity profile] theditz.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I know girls should be allowed to be all these things without society judging them for it, but I find men who are filthy, insensitive, rude, messy and irresponsible kind of annoying and I tend to avoid them. I view them all as bad characteristics, no matter what gender you are. I've met girls who are very proud of being all these things and I've never quite understood that. Is it purely because of the equality issue or because they feel confident about being themselves?

[identity profile] the-kumquat.livejournal.com 2010-09-24 09:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I think its more OP is excited that there is a female character in media who is allowed to have other traits besides nurturing, caring, etc. Media rarely shows female characters capable of being as acerbic and brutal as Toph is, in my opinion.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 09:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but - yeah, confidence, partially. But then some of it comes from the fact that we're tired of having to look or dress a particular way just because of our gender.

I mean, I'm not arguing for bad hygiene or rudeness - honestly, I wouldn't go as far as Toph - but really? When my brother can roll out of bed without doing anything to his hair, throw a bunch of rumpled clothing on, and go to class without getting weird looks from his classmates while I can't? It's kinda frustrating.

... I still end up throwing on rumpled clothing anyways, and I just cut my hair short so that I look like a guy to deal with it all, but in the end, the expectations are just irritating.

This goes doubly for those who aren't looking for any partner at all. I don't see why we should dress ourselves up a particular way. I understand dressing up nicely to be polite, but for casual everyday stuff? Eh.

Sure they have and I won't judge you for feeling this way, but honestly?

Most people don't want to be in a relationship/be friends/work/etc. with someone who is filthy, insensitive, rude, messy, irresponsible, an emotionally challenged disgusting pig, no matter their gender. Yeah, such features are often more excused if you are a man, but still, they are universally bad characteristic. You shouldn't have to look always perfectly pretty and be nice to everybody every day, but it is not great to be an unpleasant human being (which someone is if they don't shower, don't care about other people, are never nice to them, won't ever do what they are asked to do, etc.) either.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 09:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Regardless of the desirability of these qualities IRL, I think the OP's point is that it's nice to see a female character who's allowed to have them.

I hate how in fiction, a girl who spits and swears and goes a few days without showering is regarded as a dirty troublemaker and is either punished for not being dainty and ladylike or is forced to get a makeover, while a guy who spits and swears and goes without showering has "a natural manly musk" and is considered rugged and sexy. Just...no. The reality is, they both stink and that's not gonna endear them to anyone except the flies.

You know what? Extremes are bad. I find it hard to be around people who are overmanicured/obsessed with makeup, too sensitive, uptight about politeness, bad at kicking back and having fun, or who live like automatons. These qualities are frequently encouraged in women, to the detriment of everyone on planet earth.

You and me both, you and me both.

And I think it's more... the idea that we have these flaws (because they ARE flaws,) and we have to TRY to work against them- I don't have a job right now and haven't bathed in two days, but usually I am clean, responsible, try to be sensitive, try to be polite, try to be somewhat neat--- but try, work , are key words here. Pretty much every girl in fiction is naturally that way, and it's nice to see someone who isn't, who has to learn, and try. It may not make her likeable, but it makes her relateable. It's why say, Jean Gray can come like a sue where as anyone who told me the main character from Kare Kano no Jijou was a sue would get laughed at. Jean is wonderful and neat and considerate and sweet and loves everyone and doesn't have to try-- all these things naturally come to her. Yukino comes acroass as all those things, but it's because she works her butt off at them and she's secretly a lazy selfish pig.

I think it's also similar to liking villains because they're fictional and so they're really not hurting anyone real, so you can take some pleasure in their bad actions even though you work against them yourself and would never personally do them- fight against the temptation to do them.

Gawd, that turned into thoughts on yaoi, sorry.

TL;DR: It's not that we're proud of these bad habits, but that it's easier to relate to someone who shares your bad habits than to someone who doesn't.

“...Girls have the right to be filthy, insensitive, rude, messy, irresponsible, emotionally challenged, disgusting pigs TOO”??? So...What then? OF COURSE every male on the planet is already like that, right OP? And a guy could NEVER be “serious, neat, organized, nurturing, and mature”... Guess what OP... you're a judgmental * Dumb-Ass *.

*wince* I mean, it's one thing to not exactly follow the thin line gender rules have for us... it's quite another to take care of your basic hygiene. I'm glad you're showering more often, Anon. For your sake.

MOTHER FUCKIN' TRUE

oh god I am so new to this show (tardy to the party, haaay) but I. Love. Toph.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-24 11:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Hell yeah, I love Toph so much. She's definitely up there with one of my favorite fictional character ever, along with one of the very few female characters that I relate to at all.

[identity profile] skiota.livejournal.com 2010-09-25 12:17 am (UTC)(link)
I know a lot of girls that feel this way; I'm not one of them. I'm kind of a neat freak, and I have to shower before I let anyone see me. I let my fiance kiss me now in the morning before I brush my teeth, and I don't freak out as much when he touches my hair when it's greasy. I have bad vision, but I can't put on my glasses before I shower and sometimes my eyes hurt (from strain) by the time I do shower. I used to not be able to deal with his morning body odor either but now I can cuddle him in the morning which makes me a lot happier.

I am compelled to clean if there is a mess in the house and it drives him crazy that I'm cleaning so much (not to get germs up, just putting things in the proper place; I don't have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder or anything, it just bugs me).

The point of this is; it's not so bad to not worry about cleanliness, because the other spectrum is being -too- tidy to the point of pushing your loved ones away. Glad you like Toph, she's really cool. She's my fiance's favorite character too.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
This, so much.

A lot of people are not getting this secret. It's not about wanting to be all those things the OP listed; it's that people assume that women are, by nature, not any of those things, ever. If a female character acts irresponsibly, or is rude to someone for no apparent reason, or is *gasp!* messy, people will judge her- not because it was the wrong thing to do, but because 'women don't do that! They're physically perfect and in control all the time!'. Women can smell bad and be sloppy; it's not nice, but it's not something that should be treated as a myth either. The emotionally challenged part is specially true: female characters can be unconfident, insecure and make wrong choices, which doesn't mean they're an affront to feminism, it means they're characters.

I hope Toph continued to rock on well after her youth.

Yeah props to Toph for being herself! Also I don't think she's gross at all.

I hate to break it to you, but everyone showers and combs their hair, including the overwhelming majority of men.

Fact: Toph is the greatest character in the history of ever, female or male.

((PS? I am so with you, OP. I would live in jammies if I didn't have to have a stupid job.))

Ew. We need less people being slobs. Grow up.

(Anonymous) 2010-09-25 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
LOL @ all the people going 'but being gross is gross!'

It's fiction. There's this thing that happens a lot in fiction, see, where character traits and events you would (often quite rightfully) want to avoid in real life are incredibly fun to watch and read about!

It's fun watching gross characters. I have my rl days where I like to revel in grossness, but even on those days I have a lower hygiene limit. Fictional gross on the other hand? You never have to actually smell it. And it's nice to see it happen with the rare girl, instead of just boys. There's a certain joy in watching a character like that, who just doesn't give a crap, even if you shouldn't follow their literal example.
