OH so you have to be "beautiful" to be "loved" right? HOW PRIVILEGED OF YOU.

...

Frankly, I dislike fandom feminists. I like feminists (those that have feminist values which extend away from the computer and the internet). You don't have to be a militant lesbian to support women's rights - you don't have to chain yourself to a building or wear a t-shit saying "men are slags" - but just supporting women's rights by interjecting when things are wrong and holding women up is enough.

inb4 BUT I CAN'T DO THAT - MY SOCIAL PHOBIA

*t-shirt

lol

[identity profile] quadruplify.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
You had me up to that last line. Yay for casual ableism!

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
I think they're referring to the fact that some online feminists say that their social phobias or other disabilities prevent them from participating in rl activism. Because they think that's necessary to be a 'real' feminist, those women are just posers.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Put it this way:

If you have one leg and you try to run a marathon, that's something people will respect and admire you for.

If you have one leg and you constantly bitch about all the things you can't do with only one leg, that's something people will pity and feel sorry at you for, not respect.

If you are trying to overcome your social phobia (even if you fail), I am deeply impressed and proud. If you resign yourself to a life of never helping others in the real world over it, then yeah, I think that's a bit idiotic, and pity is all you're going to get from me.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 09:54 pm (UTC)(link)
YAY! I GET PITY!

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Do you think you deserve anything more from a stranger on the internet?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Oooh, iceburn.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:02 pm (UTC)(link)
> you have one leg and people are constantly bitching at you for not running a marathon

that's more like it.

[identity profile] quadruplify.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 10:03 pm (UTC)(link)
Right, because social phobia can be overcome if you just try really, really hard. Good to know!

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
... It can be. Are you silly or have you never heard of people getting over it? It takes work.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, it takes work, but what type of work and how much varies wildly. There are rare occasions when just going out and getting over it (or whatever it is you're suggesting) helps, but in most cases it takes therapy and medication, and even then it might be years before they see any type of real improvement.

Lol, stop pretending like your 'disability' is anything more than an excuse for being a lazy dick. :)

So disabled people are obligated to be good, heroic examples for the nondisabled? Mm-hmm.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Social anxiety isn't a fucking disability, get over your damn self.

Talk about a bullshit first-world problem.

I get what you're saying, but not everyone with one leg is going to try to run a marathon, and that doesn't necessarily mean they're "self-pitying". There's plenty of space between running a marathon and doing nothing but whining all day.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 02:22 am (UTC)(link)
what.

[identity profile] mistress-siana.livejournal.com 2010-10-08 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh you beautiful troll, you!

"militant lesbian"
"chain yourself to a building"

Are you from the 70s?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 09:57 pm (UTC)(link)
HOW DARE YOU DISCRIMINATE AGAINST TIME TRAVELLERS.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
And this differs from other feminists how?

(Anonymous) 2010-10-08 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
In that the majority are not crazy second wave feminists now?

[identity profile] inkedfeathers.livejournal.com 2010-10-09 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
You speak as if the two are mutually exclusive.

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 12:50 am (UTC)(link)
I love the term "militant lesbian" :D

"Ma'am, if you do not scissor with me right now, I shall charge at you in my camo gear and you'll not know where to turn, mwahahahaaaaa!"

XD Lesbian's just a sexuality dude, you either are it or aren't it. As far as I'm aware, there's no raging about with green face paint going on. (Though if anyone knows differently, do inform me, it sounds like it could be fun!)

(Anonymous) 2010-10-09 02:54 am (UTC)(link)
....Sign me up for that army!
