If you have nothing against trans people then how is it transphobia? There are characters I can't see as gay, and characters I can't see as straight- which have nothing to do with the stereotypes they fit- does that make me a homophobe and a heterophobe? I can't see certain characters as gay and I'm gay, do I hate myself?

I think you're okay as long as you don't have anything against the idea and everyone else enjoying it.

Pretty much this. Just respect other people's fanon unless they're pushing it on you or something, or going around saying it's the right way to view a character.

There's a female char that a few in my fandom view as FTM, and I'm fine with their fanon. But for me, her being happily female is part of what makes her awesome and very personally relatable for me.

... Homestuck, right?

[identity profile] miss_prince.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 10:08 pm (UTC)(link)
That was my first thought. I mean, an orange feather?

I don't think there's anything transphobic about it.

In fact, I think the other people are closer to being in the wrong- if they see a character as FtM, rather than caring about the character's birth sex and making a big deal out of it, shouldn't they just view the character as male and leave it at that?

okay there is no way this isn't about the FTM!Dave bit of headcanon floating around

and it's cool, anon! You don't sound transphobic for me. It's not like you have to support the idea or believe in it or even like it if it doesn't really appeal to you or seem like a story you'd want to read. As long as you just respect it and you aren't all EEEEWWWW NO HE'S NOT A TRANNYYYY. And it doesn't sound like this is your deal.

god I suck at explaining myself but like...tl;dr, just respect real trans people, and don't beat yourself up about it :>

(Anonymous) 2010-12-09 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
... to be fair, if you read/write porn about the character, it... might matter a little bit.

Yeah I think you're beating yourself up unnecessarily. If a character isn't canonically trans, you shouldn't feel obligated to think of them as such.

[identity profile] bamf-girl.livejournal.com 2010-12-09 11:05 pm (UTC)(link)
If it's not explicitly stated, then there's no reason for you to go along with everyone if you don't think they're trans. As long as you're respectful to those who do, what's it matter?

just because you don't share the opinion someone is trans, you're not automatically transphobic, evenless is there's nothing in canon telling that character is indeed trans. I don't get why you feel b like that.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-09 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
don't sweat it. 78% of "transphobia" accusations on the internets are invalid anyway. or they're actually about misogyny and/or homophobia.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-09 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I am disappointed this is a bout Homestuck and not Fake News. Because if I see one more 'Colbert is ftm and wants Jon to rape him straight' fic, I will kill someone.

cool story bro

Wait, but how is you not believing it any 'worse' than everyone else believing it? I mean, unless it's confirmed in canon, then it's just a fan idea/theory, and those are always subjective. Unless your reason is something like "that can't be because it's GROSS AND AWFUL," there's no reason to feel bad about it; it's just like any other character trait that fans might disagree over. Just because it's a sensitive subject doesn't mean you're automatically a bigot if you don't agree with people about it.

tbh i'm far more skeeved out about people who are like "I JUST KNOW HE'S TRANS I JUST KNOW IT, HE'S JUST SO GOOD AT PASSING." like that harry potter secret-- wtf was that about? :/

(Anonymous) 2010-12-10 01:59 am (UTC)(link)
Here's a tip: There is a reason it's called "headcanon."

It's because they are making it up!!!
Fans insert their own personal BS issues into what they watch, and start treating it like some sacred truth.
Shipping, sexuality, character origins, whatever. Some of them even let it influence their ideas on the real world and actual people. They do because of their own personal problems, it has nothing to do with whatever work they are talking about.
There is not something wrong with not seeing something that does not exist!

I should not even have to write this...

I'm an FtM, and I NEVER agree with anyone's interpretation of a canonically male (and otherwise assumed cis) character as an FtM. Can't explain why, but it always feels very arbitrary and based on some slightly-creepy reason.

Also, why is it so damned important to some people to interpret characters as trans? I mean, if they are trans themselves and looking for representation, fine, I get that. But a lot of the time it seems to be cis people, and I really don't get what their interest is. Bugger off!

If it goes against the established canon, then anything you or someone else conjectures is your own personal opinion. Not phobia.

[identity profile] ayeayes.livejournal.com 2010-12-10 04:35 am (UTC)(link)
To be honest, the only thing that really bothers me about fan theories is when people seem to expect everyone in the fandom to take on that theory, or assume that everyone already agrees on it.

(Anonymous) 2010-12-10 05:22 pm (UTC)(link)
I would almost like that idea, but only because I ALSO like the idea that seppucrow was female and that part of the first prototyping affected future!dave when he self-prototyped with it. :P
