In the English-speaking parts of fandom? Probably a good assumption, since there are an awful lot of American fans.

Still...if you go to, say, a Gay Pride rally, and someone says/does something stupid? It's probably not a great idea to say "They must be gay, then." Same applies to nationality, or any place on the internet that is predominantly one thing (female, American, black, gay) because people tend to think you're an idiot.

I haven't seen any quiet and subtle character developments even on multiple rewatches. If other people see them, that's great, but IMHO a lot of what they see is either fan conjecture or acting nuances, rather than the writing.

Crass jokes and roleplay are both common reactions to things that scare us. Especially among teenagers and young adults. Those things are part of the way the human brain tries to cope.

And it's all still inappropriate. Roleplaying may be the only way your friend think she knows how to offer comfort via the internet, but you can tell her that the idea makes you feel sick, and that you much preferred the sympathy you got at first. People don't learn if they don't get told when they're screwing up.
