Man, this reminds me of when I was a kid and wanted to play Oz and be Dorothy but knew my best friend would want to be Dorothy. So I made her read Ozma of Oz and played up how awesome Ozma was to manipulate her into wanting to be Ozma instead. I was such a baby Slytherin.

For a while it works out, but if you're fandom friends for a long time without talking about RL at all it feels really distancing, like you don't know who they are. Especially when you try to initiate talks about RL but they don't ever want to talk about RL. If we only talk about fandom, I just never feel close. :/

lol I am Chinese and female and feminist and pansexual through and through and I agree with everything this secret says.

Some things that may seem racist or sexist or whatever are not, and, in fact, just are. A character is white? The character happened to be born with the alleles that give them fair skin. Does it have to insinuate some hidden white supremacist agenda? What if Moriarty was black? "omgah they're saying that all black people are violent terrorists!!!"

Some comments above are whining, "oh they make it seem like Chinese people are all criminals and smuggle shit" and later, after someone points out the head smugglers were white, retorts "oh they're saying Chinese people can't even do their own smuggling". Well. Looks like you can't go right anywhere...

I've stopped paying attention to anybody who tries to pull racism/sexism/homophobia/whatever out of the smallest things, because if you apply that to any random scenario, you will see that no matter how it's done, there's always something wrong to be found. What's a person to do, then?

There's a line between actual offensiveness and merely salvaging for something to complain about.

IAWTC. Fellow Caucasian South African here. I definitely think the secret should have been worded better to not come off sounding like OP was generalising all white SAfricans as racist.

Sorry, no, it doesn't work like that. You can have a great reason for doing it, but you are still abandoning them. You made the decision to leave and focus your attention on things other than your friendship. You have abandoned that friendship. That's pretty much the goddamn definition of abandoment. IRL can get in the way, and that makes sense, but you are STILL abandoning that friendship for IRL, even if you were forced against your will to make a choice about which one mattered more. The one you decide to leave behind is the one that you abandoned.
