IA. Regardless of the fact that there is a double standard that more often goes the other way, shitty behavior is shitty behavior, okay? Amy is kind of a douche to Rory sometimes. I get that it's nice in some ways to see the woman get to be that sort of character and not be treated like a slut by the show, but she's still a jerk more than once.

Yup. And they're the same people who screamed that Rose was a POS because of the way she treated Mickey, even though they weren't engaged or even living together when she left with 9, they screamed that Rose wasn't good enough to be a companion because she didn't go to college or have a professional job - at least working in a department store is a respectable job unlike a 'kissogram'.

Seems as good a place as any to ask this, something that's bugged me since I first watched the season finale.

Why the hell did Rory take the long path to watch over a box for a thousand years? It was made to be alien proof, there's no way humans could have done anything to hurt her. It just seemed pointless and stupid to me.

But yeah, I kind of agree with this.

To be honest, there aren't many things in 5th season that made me happy, uh. Only River Song. I'm not even eagering for the 6th, which makes me sad, 'cause Doctor Who used to make me sooo happy...

Uh... yeah, lots of things change when genders are reversed. That's because, for good or ill, accurate or not, people perceive different reasons for the same action depending on the gender of the person. They've done tests, dressing babies in pink or blue. When a person who doesn't know the baby's true gender sees a baby in blue crying, they think "he" is angry. When a baby in pink is crying, they assume it's because "she" is sad or scared. So a woman not expressing affection towards a guy is looked at very differently then a man doing the same thing. This is hardly a world-shaking revelation.

Really? Most of the people I've seen think Rory is a doormat and that he needs to stand up for himself and not let Amy treat him so badly.

Honestly, I just don't get his purpose on the show. I love Amy as a companion but hate that her connection to the Doctor is disturbed by the presence of this severely uninteresting guy. I can't help but to think she and the Doctor would've had a much deeper connection had Rory not been there.

IMO Rory is there to act like the viewer's POV - he's just the normal, average guy thrown into weird situations and dealing with it. And you know, is sweet and caring and nice.

That's why I like that Rory's there. I get that the Doctor's relationship with his companion is central to the show, but Rose, Martha, Donnna, and Jack were so intensley attached to the Doctor and three out of four of them were romantically interested in him. It's nice to see a companion love someone else just as much if not more. It's a change of pace and I love it. Just an opinion.

People always talk about fandom misogyny, but Doctor Who fandom makes me realize that the only thing preventing rampant fandom misandry is the fact that 99% of male characters conform to masculine ideals.

Yeah it would be treated differently. Frankly the stereotype, for good or ill, is that girls are obsessed with boys and boys are obsessed with sex. Therefore, girl doormat/passivity to boys is as expected as boy disinterest/asshattery to girls. Not only is this the stereotype, but this is played out over and over and over again on tv. So the leeway of actions is quite different when the opposite of the stereotype is true, simply because a lot of people want to encourage girls who don't focus on boys, and boys who are more understanding to their girlfriends and also it seems innovative on TV. This is the world you live in OP.

I really do not understand the Amy/Rory hate.

Their relationship honestly reminds me of the relationship between my husband and I. I'm Amy-- outgoing, emotional, with many different desires, but will always come home to my husband. My husband is Rory-- quiet, shy, but fiercely devoted to me.

Talk about deviating from the roles society constructs for us... can you understand that monogamy is NOT the only way to have a happy and functional relationship? I am in love with my husband. With his knowledge, I have slept with other men. I am going to fly cross-country to spend a weekend with my best friend in a hotel room, where we plan to wear clothes approximately 1% of the time. He is free to sleep with other people when he likes. Maybe that's the way Amy and Rory see life, too. You see this one way of life that's common, and suddenly you can't understand that other people are HAPPY living their lives in a way that wouldn't make YOU happy.

Amy and Rory aren't perfect. But they are happy together.
