uh, the people who I talk to, who liked the song, don't think it's funny. Sounds like you just have some shitty friends.

[identity profile] xelestri.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 08:58 pm (UTC)(link)
You have shitty friends, OP. He's only famous because someone tried to rape his sister. That's a terrible thing to be famous for, let alone that the internet latched onto it and made a meme out of it.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 09:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I also hate that a person was given attention and praise for stopping a rapist. What is the world coming to.

Seriously of all the people who get fame from autotune + youtube he's easily the most deserving.

The song might be chronically catchy and fun, but no, it should be obvious the subject matter is not funny.
I love it but it does feel weird that it was a songified real event that was definitely not funny.

Now there is only waiting to see if this will devolve into wank and arguments.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
OK, anyone who made a joke about the rape attempt itself is a moron. Personally I thought it was funny because he has such a great personality and was so awesomely outspoken; he and his sister refused to be intimidated by the guy's actions and spoke out, which is really the best thing they could've done. It's just that they did it with awesome attitude, and then someone made a catchy song. That's what makes it funny and enjoyable, in a sense. But there's nothing funny about what actually happened to her, goddamn.

[identity profile] easilyentranced.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this is pretty much what I came here to say.

[identity profile] childings.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly this. It's why I don't find the song or the video offensive. I'm in awe of his ability to react with humor in such a situation. It takes a strong personality to laugh when faced with such a horrible experience. (It's not like his sister was actually raped, either -- if that had been the case, then maybe I'd say it was tasteless, but IIRC he actually ran the rapist out of the house.) Also, mp3 sales of the song went into a fund for the family, and now they don't live in that neighborhood any more. So good for Antoine and his family.

[identity profile] fireholly.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, this. The song is great for not glamorising the rapist, like they unintentionally are in a lot of songs (because it's easy to make bad guys look cool). Instead it repeatedly calls him 'dumb, so dumb, really dumb, some idiot'... That's the kind of stuff we need to hear about scum like the bed intruder.

[identity profile] geekbynight.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:29 pm (UTC)(link)
Agreed.

[identity profile] etazere.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 10:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Thiiiiis this this.

I mean, the whole thing is about him warning people about this guy, calling the guy a moron, and saying that they're going to track him down. It makes me personally smile because I'm like FUCK YEAH, GET THAT SUNNA BITCH AND TAKE HIM DOWN.

If it makes you feel any better, I think he earned enough from the popularity of that song to move his family to a nicer area of town.

"Surprise-hugged in bed"? Really?

[identity profile] humblebot.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not making fun of the sister almost getting raped, it's making fun of the rapist. IMO it is trivializing rape in one aspect (the reaction people have, that is), but it's also completing humiliating someone who attempted to do something horrible. Really we should be asking how the sister feels about it. If she's fine with the way things have gone down since the song became popular, then I see nothing wrong with everyone coming together to laugh at her stupid would-be rapist.

Also keep in mind that with the money Antoine Dodson received from song sales, he was able to buy a new house for himself, his mom, and sisters.

Dodson launched a website in which he asks for donations to assist his family in moving "out of the hood".[11] The money, as well as money from sales of "Bed Intruder" on iTunes and merchandise such as T-shirts, will go to helping his family buy a new home and setting up a foundation for juvenile diabetes, a disease that has afflicted both his sister and his mother.[12] In August 2010, Dodson noted the irony of having "a hit on iTunes, but we're still in the projects";[13] one month later, Us Weekly reported that Dodson had made enough money from the song to move his family out of the projects to a better house.[14] In September 2010, the Gregory Brothers reported that they had sold more than 100,000 copies of The Bed Intruder Song on iTunes.[15]

I've never listened to Bed Intruder for that reason, OP. Not out of any sense of moral righteousness; the subject matter just makes me so uncomfortable. All the other Autotune songs out there are about something like double rainbows or people dancing on the evening news...and then there's one about a girl almost getting raped. And that's the one that became the most popular. Uncomfort~.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 09:24 pm (UTC)(link)
It's an addicting song yeah, and kind of funny when you take the lyrics out of context, but did you know that the song's money earnings made it possible for Antoine Dodson to buy a home for his family away from the possible rapist in an area that's safe?

So in a way, making light of a bad thing has helped them out :/

[identity profile] eerised-da.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You have every right to not like that song and point out to your friends what's wrong with it. In fact, the problem with our culture is that it's a rape culture and people make jokes about "surprise sex". Rape is by no means funny or something you should turn into a song and joke about. Even if the victim had been white, there's still a lot of things that rape victims face such as victim blaming, like questioning or not she deserved it or was asking for it because of how she dressed.

Those things are not okay. Standing up for rape victims does not make you uptight. More people, more men, should reject rape culture so that we can change it.

[identity profile] miezen.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 09:52 pm (UTC)(link)
There have been shitheads reacting in stupid manners to it, yes, but the song itself brought about a lot of good. It raised awareness about what happened, and, as someone else in the thread mentioned, the proceeds from people buying the song went straight to Antoine Dodson and his family.

(Anonymous) 2011-03-18 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Did they ever find the guy who tried to rape her? I mean, they got his fingerprints and all.

As a person who was nearly raped, just like Antoine's sister, I found the song really empowering. The song isn't making fun of the rape; it's laughing at the rapist ("you are really dumb, for real") and refusing to be intimidated ("we just dust our shoulders off and keep on movin").
OP's friends are doing it wrong. D:

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-03-18 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I would be inclined to agree with you, except . . .

1.) Auto Tune the News had to get Antoine's permission in order to make/post the song. At first he told them no, because he thought they were making fun of what happened, but then he said that he realized the song was putting out a good message -- that it was basically saying that the person who did it wasn't going to get away with it. So, he and Kelly both gave ATtN permission.

2.) Antoine's family got a cut of all the songs that were sold on iTunes and all of the merchandise that was sold as well. In fact, they got so much that Antoine bought his mother a new house and got them out of the projects. It's just a silly little auto tuned thing, but it did a world of good, you know?

I agree that rape is not funny, but Antoine himself finds humor with this song, and has managed to get himself and his family into a better neighborhood so that his sister and family won't be at risk for something like that happening again. I just can't see much fault with the song for doing that for them, you know? A situation that was really bad was taken and changed so that something good would come out of it. That doesn't happen every day.

What I want to know is what the bed intruder thought when he heard the song. :P

(Anonymous) 2011-03-19 12:44 am (UTC)(link)
The only humor in it is the surprise that out of something so horrible and low, something truly amazing, spontaneous and creative could be born. This song has made Antoine Dodson and his families lives much better. They refused to be victims -- more than once! He's capitalized on his heroism the way few people ever are able to. No one thinks less of either him or his sister, except maybe the idiots you hang with.

Man, I remember I kept seeing that guy around, and I was all like 'what is this?' so I looked up the video. My reaction was pretty much 'holy shit, that is terrifying.'

OP

(Anonymous) 2011-03-19 04:51 am (UTC)(link)
Welp, this thread has pretty much made me realized that my friends have some seriously assholish tendencies.
With EVERYONE I've talked to, the joke in that song was NEVER making fun of the rapist, it was ALWAYS making fun of ghetto people. I really didn't realize that other, less-assholey people were actually looking up to Antoine and making fun of the rapist when they listened to/sang that song. Anyway, thank you for the comments, they've made me like the song a lot more :) And it's SO awesome that they were able to make enough money from the whole thing that they were able to move someplace better, that's really crowning-moment-of-awesome right there.
(The rapist hasn't been caught, correct? It's weird to think he's still out their, knowing he caused all this. He's probably driven himself absolutely insane with fear by now; seeing this guy who's talking about how "we gonna find you" everywhere. Serves him right of course, but it's weird to think he's out there.)

[identity profile] oohasparklie.livejournal.com 2011-03-19 06:25 pm (UTC)(link)
They're not making fun of an almost-rape. They're making fun of his reaction to it because he was so cartoonish about it. (The creators of the song...idk what your friends are doing.)

i'm willing to bet everyone above me who's claiming the song was "criticizing rape" and "empowering"

(Anonymous) 2011-03-20 03:23 am (UTC)(link)
is a well-meaning but ignorant white person.

people find the song funny. that's obvious. want to know why? because it's an autotuning of a rant from a flamboyant black guy who talks like a stereotypical kid from the ghetto. people took his anger over the attempted rape of his sister and made it into a joke because hey, look, look how BLACK he is, he's so OVER THE TOP, he's so HOOD... i've even seen people justifying racism with it (well, hey, some of them really do talk like that!)

do you really think the guys from autotune the news are anti-rape crusaders? no. please stop viewing something racist and offensive through your go-girl feminist lens. sure, it's awesome that he helped prevent his sister's rape. sure, it's awesome that they moved out of a dangerous neighborhood. but don't rationalize the crap out of it and then pat yourselves on the back for being good white people.

also, the media circus focused on antoine, and not at all on kelly. who, you know. was the one who almost got raped. so yeah. just more erasure of women of color, no big deal, go back to fangirling over your anime.
