Benzaie's openly bi, isn't he? But I don't think it's ever come up in his reviews, so I guess it's not quite what you're looking for.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 08:06 pm (UTC)(link)
Other people are going to wank over this, so I'll just say one thing. I think Doug Walker is straight, but he really will flirt to the extremes with anyone, including his brother. And Benzaie and LordKat are definitely bisexual.

[identity profile] ragnarok-hound.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:08 pm (UTC)(link)
LordKat as well? Huh, that's unexpected.

[identity profile] beforeglamour.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
He seems pretty gay friendly at least. He did that video making fun of Boy Beware.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 08:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't forget that he'll suck on anything phallic for the longest time possible. I know it's just heavy fanservice, but seeing him put a lightsaber in his mouth and swirling his tongue around it so well made me wonder...

[identity profile] gethenian.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:32 pm (UTC)(link)
There's also a video somewhere of Benzaie and Bennett snogging. I think Bennett is just insane, though, not bi. I vaguely remember this being part of a dare or something where a couple of the dudes were going to do it but Bennett was the only one who went through with it. It's buried in a someone's vlog from the 1st anniversary brawl, I think.

And done.

(Rantasmo is ADORABLE. Even if he can't pronounce "yaoi")

Wave! Waverly! Look! It's there, the thing! LOOK AT IT. Gosh I need to stop with the large but it calls to me and I want you to know about all the things that are so look now please!

[identity profile] math-camel.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 08:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe they want to make their actual preferences known because people are shipping and slashing them? I mean think about how weird it would be if you weren't "really" a celebrity but still saw that kind of stuff about yourself. Probably not the real reason or the whole story, but just think about it. As for folks who are LGBT just remember how Spooney's girlfriend was treated and how people freaked out over Iron Liz. Then multiply that by at least 2. Then imagine why you might not want to reveal anything personal or trollable to the internet. So yeah, not that any of this makes it any better.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 08:12 pm (UTC)(link)
They frigging love the slash!fic though. The girls (and girlfriends) squee over it and laugh about their own. Doug is all like "why would I be offended?" at sometimes really quite scary art (the artist is great, but dude, gouged eyes), there was big stream where they all read the porn and thought it hot and they've admitted to pandering. They're awesome for that.

These are my thoughts as well.

Yes. Yes, they would. Probably not if you were sufficiently obscure -- though bigoted trolls are willing to dig through anything to find a target, it seems -- but if you got recognition, you wouldn't be safe.

If you have a friend or five with armored skin that are willing to mod for you, hey, go for it. LGB nerds are one thing, but as they say, the T might as well stand for Tomato as things stand currently. It'd be nice to have some representation of the nonhostile, nonmocking sort.

Despite the jokes that show up in their videos, a number of reviewers on TGWTG are extremely GLBT-friendly. In addition to the ones mentioned in previous comments, JewWario cross-dresses, and godDAMN is he good at it. There's a photo out there somewhere of him dressed as a woman, with his wife, and honestly... if you weren't positive what she looked like, you might believe it was a photo of Scarlett. He's a big Rocky Horror fan, too. And as yet another point in his favor, there are multiple people who hang out on his stream who are genderqueer and he's never gotten our preferred pronouns wrong.

You absolutely do run into trolling bigots in that fandom, but there actually is a large section of TGWTG fandom that is extremely open-minded about sexuality and orientation and gender identity. And as for the producers themselves... JesuOtaku's been accused of being homophobic based on a rather badly-worded Formspring question she posted, but she had no problem with me auditioning for both male and female roles for her FruitsBasket project. And as for the rest of them... they were all perfectly friendly when my same-sex spouse and I met them at MAGFest.

I know of at least three people on the LJ fan community (myself and two others) who identify as genderqueer. I make videos on my own (bad ones, relatively speaking) and do a podcast called Random Odds where we just interviewed Linkara and will be interviewing Doug and Rob Walker in the future and anyone else we can get from the site. Which is as close as you're gonna get to having me on there for some time, I suspect, but it's not an easy site to get on, there aren't many of us in the first place, and there are more than you think who are doing things to promote GLBT interest or even merely presence around the fandom just offstage, so to speak. ;3

This topic has been brought up on F!S before. As several people above me have mentioned, Benzaie is definitely bisexual. (Source: http://benzaie.com.over-blog.com/article-benzaie-q-a-5-formspring-resurrection-67891979-comments.html#anchorComment, and several other places.) He also occasionally talks about GLBT topics in his more serious videos, and has mentioned that Family Compo is one of his favourite manga. And in general, the people at TGWTG are very GLBT friendly, you'll find. Hell, they openly cheer when finding fanfic.

But even without Benzaie, I think what you are looking for is a little tricky. Take for example TGWTG; they are a young company. Yes, they do have a slowly growing number of staff, but their employment is based on videos they make being found or posted on the forum, and how much people seem to enjoy their videos (ie. hit count, positive feedback, being featured on Transmission Awesome, etc). I would love for their to be more GLBT content or reviewers, but it might take time for someone of that ilk to emerge and fit the criteria. Hell, some of the recently added reviewers have been posting their stuff for over a year now (and have been featured on TA) and are only now on the site.

Other game companies who are long established most likely have even stricter criteria for hiring. They most likely accept people based on resumes and qualifications as well as the sort of content they would bring. These companies would most likely focus on what is popular, and what will make them money, rather than what will be interesting to GLBT audiences. I'm not saying there won't be people that manage to make it big and talk about those topics, but I don't think it will be common.

Also, there are websites that do offer content for GLBT folk. Just do a google search; they exist. Not as fun as the video sites, but they exist. Hell, have you stumbled into the fandom for TGWTG? Lots of us are Rainbow People ;D I'm sure one or two of us might make it.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 09:12 pm (UTC)(link)
I've felt the same. A lot. I'm remaining anonymous, since I've already stirred up a lot of drama. I'm tired of us being the butt of jokes, but what can ya do?

(Anonymous) 2011-04-07 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
Why don't more reviews conduct their business in drag? (Among other questions.)

Uh because they don't want to?

If you want something to exist do it. Don't wait for someone else. If you don't want to do it then you answered your own questions.

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2011-04-07 09:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I've TOTALLY wanted to be a reviwer of the type that you describe, but I imagine it would go badly (i.e. LOTS of debating my gender or sexuality in the comments - that happens enough in real life already). Plus I have no camera. Plus I have no idea if I'd be any good at it, and might totally suck.

I understand the urge, though.

I really don't understand why you're looking to relate to a videogame or movie reviewer by their sexuality.

If anything, you should see how you relate to their taste in games and movies.

I don't understand this.
"Blah blah, representation!" and all that, but their sexuality is about as relevant to their reviews as their choice of ketchup brand.

I've often felt the same way, that some of the gay jokes go too far, so I'm also planning to do playthroughs of games and be more open-minded in my talk. Considering I'm not sure of my sexual identity aside from being celibate, I would like to keep making jokes about "Man, I'd go straight for him" just to mess with viewers.

(also wanna talk about the good things in fandom, because I've never found a Let's Play that's done that, but that's sort of a stupid tertiary priority)

WHOAAAA
I was literally just thinking of making a secret about this exact subject, but with more of a "does anyone know the views of these people" air to it...*lurks comment section for answers*

(Anonymous) 2011-04-08 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
Would they all just debate my "true gender" or question my sexuailty in the comments?

Not all of them, surely.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-08 03:51 am (UTC)(link)
I know NightStarX is bi, but it doesn't come up at all in his reviews because, you know, they're reviews. He does plots sometimes (or he used to; he's changed formats a couple of times) but they're all around the games he's reviewing.

[identity profile] meran-flash.livejournal.com 2011-04-08 06:19 am (UTC)(link)
I hear you. I'm having a hard time watching Paw's videos because of this. He's constantly re-asserting his hetero status pretty aggresively, and the content he always seems to take issue with in the movies he reviews just happens to be the stuff that's a bit queer.
