(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 08:50 pm (UTC)(link)I realise that is a bit wordy, but it is the absolute truth.
The symptoms and diagnosis of Aspergers are exactly the same as Self-Important Asshole.

(Anonymous) 2011-04-14 09:01 pm (UTC)(link)I have a cousin that has AS, and he is one of the kindest sweetest kids. He does say and do a lot of things that are not usually socially acceptable, but it's more of him being a really close talker, hugging everyone he meets, having no idea of "normal" social boundaries, telling overly personal stories that most people would keep to themselves. That type of thing. I don't think he has ever done anything that would be considered being an asshole, except maybe talk about secrets or private things that most people would not bring up. However, if you specifically tell him that something is private, he will not bring it up. He's just kind of unaware if you don't point some things out.
So, there. One claim of AS that does not read as Self-Important Asshole.

Because honestly, I was diagnosed by an autism and AS specialist, along with a psychologist. Personally speaking, most changes don't really bother me that much, unless they're really major changes (not to mention how uncomfortable and bad it makes me feel if I ever throw off another person's schedule). And I'd be a damn millionaire by now if I had nickel for everytime I've wished that I could figure out what the hell I'm doing wrong when it comes to fitting in with people.

Personally, I wouldn't think it would be so much hypochondriasis as it would be 'reading a few articles' and going "Hey, I'm also obsessive about certain subjects and am also socially awkward" - which, yeah even those are the most noticed symptoms- they're not reading further to find out that it's also a neurological/developmental disorder- not just being obsessed and having a hard time in social situations. :/
Yeah, but even if this anon has run into people who have been assholes, and then defended themselves by saying they have AS- the anon is also generalizing that people who have it, diagnosed or not, are obviously assholes too.

Haha, goats.

...was that the response you were looking for? If not, why set it up so perfectly?

Here's a HUGE DIFFERENCE between having an actual, accurate diagnosis of Asperger's Syndrome and being a 'Self-Important Asshole'-- It's called an ACTUAL NEUROLOGICAL DIFFERENCE, YOU SELF-IMPORTANT ASSHOLE*!
Many people with AS or HFA (High-Functioning Autism) do try to change or fit in, but we don't know how. Social graces don't come naturally to us, and we screw it up a lot. It's hard work to be sociable, but many of us put in that work. It's physically exhausting, but we do our best, because we live in the world, and while it's not unreasonable to expect the people around us to make some changes and have some understanding, we need to make changes, too.
*Because yeah, stating your opinion as absolute truth when you clearly haven't worked with a wide range of people on the Autism spectrum makes you kind of self-important, and while I agree that there are a lot of people making self-diagnosed claims who are just excusing their jerkish behaviour, getting down on the developmentally disabled makes you a pretty huge jerk yourself.

I'm not on the autism spectrum, but I also get a lot of "your condition isn't serious and even though I don't have it and I'm not a doctor, I will tell you exactly what it's like!" I am so so so so so sick of that kind of thing.
I won't tell you not to be upset or to feel better, because this kind of thing IS really angering and it IS really unjust, but for what it's worth, you're making an effort to be kind and to understand people who aren't like you, and the troll is not. They do not have the moral high ground here.
