My theory is that that the expectations are so much lower for 4chan, such that you pretty much expect the baseline to be insane racist homophobic misogynist discourse. It's so suffused with it over there that you barely notice it after long enough, which lets you focus on the reasonable conversations that can admittedly be had.

I actually believe that at least half of the people there are there to troll. Hell I troll there on occasion because I find it funny. (I AM a girl and I find "No girls on the internet" reactions funny beyond reason.) Once you get the mindset that everyone is just trying to get you angry it's pretty easy to ignore it.

If you believe it's helped you, that's great!

I wouldn't say 4chan's helped me, but I sort of feel at-homish in big threads where everyone flips out about the final episode of a popular show or get excited at announcements of an anime they're wanted so badly.

Figure threads on /jp/ are pretty nice too; it's usually the same people like ponpo, so there's not really any discord or rudeness unless trolls want to complain about Sudo and his figures again.

Same here, OP. I generally prefer 4chan/other chan boards to lj as well. I think the anon culture is more forgiving than having a sn, but I think the culture is more about having fun and not really worrying about offending people. The anonymity makes people lower their guards, and you realize there's a lot of people out there who are just like you.

It made me more tolerant of kinks, too. I've gone from complete revulsion on a number of kinks to going "oh, that." You realize that, like in real life, you can IGNORE what you don't like kink-wise and move on and not feel the need to be dramatic about it unless it's completely unavoidable. That doesn't work for everything you don't like, but kinks in general are harmless annoyances if you don't share them.

I imagine you'll get nasty stuff for this, but I'm with you. ilu, 4chan.

Deeepends on the board I think. That being said, I've hung out on /a/ a lot ever since Madoka was airing since that was the best place to discuss the show and I found it wasn't all that bad.

I refuse to participate in any of the transphobia, misogyny or racism, though. I don't care if it's part of their "culture", it just makes them look desperate at best and assholish at worst.

Why do the ones have to do the bringing of sadness and anger? Some of them speak as of gonorrhea, and spread it with vileness. This is not right! I wish it to be not so, but I think it is not what I am to have.

I'm not a big fan of how people characterize all of 4chan as /b/, since there are other boards that are indeed pretty awesome.

Plus, I also really love the anon culture. It's nice to be able to just post whatever you want and not have to worry about everyone shitting their pants and dog-piling on you if you say something they disagree with. (Well, they will, but they don't know who you are so it's rather irrelevant.)

If you pretend /b/ (and possibly /sp/) doesn't exist, I actually agree with this secret. 4chan tends to be much more welcoming that LJ these days, because noone will jump on you if you accidentally use a word that may have a certain connotation under a certain context/background that may be seen as even slightly homophobic/sexist/transphobic under a specific context.

The main reason why I haven't jumped to tumblr like all the k00l kidz is because tumblr is complete shit and at least LJ still sorta promotes original content.

I see what you mean, though. I used to inwardly ">:[" face at people who like.... idk, futa or stuff I don't like. Nowadays I'm totally okay with other people having kinks I don't like! I don't even mind anymore!

But /d/ is pretty much the most tolerant and encouraging board on the internet when it comes to kink. (Unless you're a furry.)
