Actually England IS very tsundere and blushy in canon. And he's sort of clingy as well.

I'm not saying people can't go overboard with it (and I agree that he's strong and prideful-- and I certainly would hate to see them as America's 'pet.' I see them as equals.), but uh, yeah. Pretty tired of people trying to turn England into something he isn't because of 'history.'

Exactly, this. People have preconceptions based on their own perception of history or whatver, and tend to gloss over the fact that ruthless pirate England? was the exact same character who got all weepy when some kid he's never met before called him "oniichan." And then they latch onto "BIG BAD RUTHLESS BRITISH EMPIRE OMG" and forget that from what we've seen he wasn't any different in his empire days.

If people want BIG BADASS RUTHLESS ENGLAND WHO DOMINATES THE SHIT OUT OF EVERYONE they're free to write him but don't pretend it's a better or a more accurate depiction of the character...

I know! England has always been a failboat. And even when we see him in his 'badass days,' he's kind of... fail about it. It's cute, and I'm not saying he can't be competent (I certainly believe he can be), but seriously. I mean check out his mad spying skills for another example of not BIG AND BAD. He's also emotional and he gets flustered easily, and he's called the most pitiful character in the cast by Himaruya. I don't support moeblob superuke England, but I do support cute and fail England, and while people are free to write him differently, I wish they wouldn't act as if those who follow how he is in the strips are doing it wrong.

Yeah. I mean, yeah, I suppose the lovestruckness gets taken to the extremes (as with every single pairing in every single fandom ever) but it's not like it's a case of fans forcibly adding these traits to his personality.

And I mean, Badass Pirate England... sits around sipping tea and practicing two-faced diplomacy while his real pirates bully Spain. Yeah, fandom likes to depict him being a big badass pirate, but I don't really remember him doing anything really pirate-y(?? is that a word?) in the actual comics. Not saying he can't be aggressive and forceful (France could tell stories about that), and he's definitely not a doormat, but it's not like OMG BADASS is his default mode as some people like to claim...

Both sides go too far IMO. I agree with this secret (for the most part. England IS a blushy tsundere, but that doesn't make him a simpering pushover), but at the same time the people who insist that because of 'history' he absolutely has to be an utter badass that would never ever bow for anyone because his badassery is so prevalent is also absurd.

I guess I don't, because while I agree fandom goes overboard with moe-izing him from time to time, most of what the person seems to want from the secret... doesn't really occur in canon? I mean it starts with "England is not a blushing little tsundere," when he really is... exactly that (not that he can't be more than just that, but yeah).

Truthfully I rarely see England as what I'd call a simpering pushover in Western fandom? But I'm willing to admit that it used to be more common than it is now. As for pining, I kind of think he does pine in the strips. Again, it can go over the top, but still.

Fair enough. To be fair I'm somewhat removed from the loop because I don't read much USUK or FrUK or any other ship where England is commonly the uke very often, so most of what I see is plot synopses and miscellaneous snippets from things that I catch either while scrolling through the kink meme or because someone posted a paragraph or two of something elsewhere for whatever reason (usually to point out how bad it is but not always). I'm willing to believe that it's not actually as common as it looks to an outsider, but it's still there and it's still annoying.

My problem with it is that, while yeah England is a derp and he was never this superbadass that people expect him to be, he's also not really the uke archetype and it feels weird to write him like that. Also it's very common for people to completely disregard that he's an old nation and has ties with a lot of countries in USUK, FrUK, etc, and that kinda bothers me, too.

I guess basically I see what this secret is trying to get at and I mostly agree with it (save for the expecting him to be a badass because history), but it's really poorly worded. I have similar complaints, anyway, so I guess that's why I'm seeing where this secret makes sense. Again, I think both sides go too far, even if the ultra moefication isn't as common as it can seem.
