Second- yes! This! I'm sick off all the Stephan's perfect crap. He's not. He's incredibly flawed. Actually he's more interesting because he's flawed- and when he's being a little crazy. Both brothers have issues- but IMO, at least Damon isn't holier than thou.

I agree Stefan has flaws, but, damn. Stefan is holier than Damon. Stefan was awful, but he changed. Damon is currently stuck in this whiny crybaby omg it is so terrible being a vampire never mind I am evil, killin' people, causin' shit, rapin' the ladies...

I wouldn't say that either of them are holy or whiny. They both have massive issues and chose very unhealthy ways of expressing them. Damon is a control freak who thinks he's the only one willing to make the hard decisions and Stefan is too passive, repeatedly refusing to take action when action was really, really required. It makes for interesting drama, but both brothers are more complicated than what you're putting out here.

Though I really, really wish that the writers would stop having Damon compel his love interests. That can go by the wayside any time.

Eeeeh. Stefan can be remarkably passive aggressive and I think he puts too much focus on his past sins without recognizing the problems he has today but he's still one of the good guys. And I like that about him! I like that he's deeply flawed and my favorite Stefan moments are when those flaws are indulged.

I get the impression that Stefan occasionally puts on an act of how he thinks a "good" person should behave just like I sometimes think that Damon's more outrageous actions are in part because he's putting on an act for how a "bad" person should behave, thanks to their respective role models when they were first turned. Teasing out their actual personalities and characters has been a lot of the fun for me over the past couple of years.

Either way though? OP, you can't seriously think that Stefan is going to be offed in the season finale or that if he somehow was, that he wouldn't be brought back, Angel-style.

Ooh a TVD secret.

I love all versions of Stefan, whether it is being a perfect boyfriend and/or chaining his ex girlfriend up in the basement and/or going on a murderous rampage in the past. IDC. I also think that in general Stefan is pretty good about owning up to his past life. And as far as we've SEEN, he hasn't really done anything I'd say was "worse" than Damon and so it wouldn't surprise me if Stefan was actually being his own worse critic. I also feel like in a season where Damon, as one of the good guys, continues to victimize and compel women and even occasionally physically abuses the woman he claims to be in love with... it is pretty easy to consider Stefan the "good" one.

Personally I would love to see more of Stefan's darker side (MAYBE HE CAN THREATEN JOHN IN THE HOSPITAL AGAIN, THAT WAS GREAT \o/), which I think is a very different dark side than the one Damon has. Maybe next season.

I still love Damon though, I just wish the writers would either 1) make him the bad guy or 2) redeem him. They're trying to do both at the same time and it's not really working. I'd say he's going in the redemption direction but seeing as he snaps almost every episode, I don't know if it will ever actually happen.

Oh the rants I have engaged in.

In some ways, it has made for very interesting, compelling TV. But I hatehatehate the thing with Andie. He's been compelling and feeding from and having sex with this woman and has faced almost no consequences from it or even been called out for it. She's been used as a way to show his Deep Inner Pain with almost nothing about how she is suffering as a victim. It's really those scenes, more than anything, where I don't understand how the writers want us to see Damon. :|

Yes, I agree. Now, I feel like viewers should hold Damon & Stefan to a different standard because, well, they're vampires. They're supposedly bad by nature, so we shouldn't be surprised that Damon is doing bad things and not really feeling remorse about it. The problem I have is that they aren't making it out to seem like what he's doing is all that wrong, and even further, are trying to make viewers feel bad for him because of all his "pain."

But I find his and Stefan's complex personalities/histories interesting... as bad as some of the things they do/have done are, I cannot deny that I'm very intrigued when I watch them do what they do. :P

This is basically everything I ever wanted to say to Stefan haters (which on tumblr, is pretty much the majority), but I'm just not as good with words.

And yes! Darker side! I got goosebumps when in 2.19 he said "I said GO!" to Jenna. Chills.

Fandom treats Stefan like a saint? More like the actual TVD writer's treat him like a saint. Fandom has an irrational hate on for the poor guy. At least the Damon/Elena fans do. (Damon/Elena fans scare me, by the way.)

I don't think he should be seen as saint, but I don't think he should be seen as some un-changeably evil bastard.

He is a legitimately flawed character. So is Damon. That's what makes them appealing. They're dark, damaged brothers. That's why people are drawn towards Stefan and Damon or Sam and Dean or Chris and Wyatt. They're NOT perfect. Nobody wants the perfect ones. We all want the ones who brood.

..Feel like that got a little off topic and ended in a different place than it started but okay.

Stefan is far from perfect but, unlike Damon, he actually feels guilt and REMORSE for the things he's done and he's trying to do better. Unlike Damon, he actually respects Elena's right to make her own choices regardless of whether or not he agrees with them.

Also, you're way off in the way Stefan is seen in this fandom. The guy gets bashed for every single thing he does or doesn't do. Just like poor Elena. Fandom will crap all over both of them for making even the slightest mistake while bending over backwards to make excuses for Damon's behavior.

However, I say all of this as someone who adores Stefan and can't stand Damon so my opinion is pretty biased.

The TVD fandom is one of the worst I've been in and as someone who's been in plenty, that's saying something.

At some point, this fandom has hated every single female character. Bonnie and the recurring characters (Rose, Jules, Isobel) tend to get the most of it but the fandom does like to spread it around and cover all their bases. Caroline & Katherine probably fair the best now but there was no small amount of hate for them back in season 1.

How gross. >:( I have to admit, I... generally tend to hate whoever the show tells me to hate, so I do kind of hate Jules and Isobel, but I also hate, like, John and Jonas. And the idea of anyone hating on Elena or Bonnie, who are both ridiculously amazing, is just a huge pile of WTF.

Bonnie IS flawless. I want to like Bonnie/Jeremy because I love them both as characters, but I just keep thinking how much better she is than him. >>

I'm a really casual watcher of TVD but I didn't like Bonnie for the longest time. She was overly controlling and kinda bitchy. The only reason I thought for people to like her was if they hated Damon and liked seeing her cut him down again and again. Then she hooked up with Jeremy and since I find them ADORABLE it's given me a new appreciation for Bonnie. Her attitude has been toned down a bit and I like that too. Bonnie isn't flawless, she was just treated by other characters as though she was.

So can you please tell me why you like her so much? I haven't met anyone who really, really liked her and I'm curious why you do.

For comparison, I like Elena (though I think she's almost painfully young), love Katherine, like Jules and Isobel, adored Lexie (dammit Damon!) and so on. Bonnie was my least favorite character for a while though I'm liking her more now in season two.

I don't really feel much for the Salvatore bros. Stefan has flaws, Damon has flaws too. Although, you're right. The reason why Damon is like this was because Stefan pushed him in that direction, so many eons ago. But Damon comes off as a raging impulsive loon all the time which is why it's easy to dismiss him before Stefan.

But anyway... what I rly care about is the well being of Jenna, Alaric and my bb Caroline.

As someone who never read the books and didn't start watching VD until it's second season (I re-watched S1 within a weekend) I will say this:

I don't like Elena with either brother. But I prefer her with Stefan. But then again, I'm probably just saying that because I like where Elena is now, where she is not showing any romantic feeling towards Damon.

I like watching the show mainly because I like the writing and the different characters and the fact it feels like a 'teen' vampire show. I adore the supporting characters more than the main characters. Caroline, Tyler, Alaric, Bonnie, Klaus, and Elijah (love him!).

But if Elena and Damon get together, my brain might not be able to accept that. I'll stop watching.
