Stefan is far from perfect but, unlike Damon, he actually feels guilt and REMORSE for the things he's done and he's trying to do better. Unlike Damon, he actually respects Elena's right to make her own choices regardless of whether or not he agrees with them.

Also, you're way off in the way Stefan is seen in this fandom. The guy gets bashed for every single thing he does or doesn't do. Just like poor Elena. Fandom will crap all over both of them for making even the slightest mistake while bending over backwards to make excuses for Damon's behavior.

However, I say all of this as someone who adores Stefan and can't stand Damon so my opinion is pretty biased.

Yoo've obviously never been to the TWOP fanboards. You'd fit right in.

Everything I've heard about TVD fandom makes me never want to go near it. Is it true they also hate my flawless witch queen, Bonnie Bennett?

Hating Bonnie was all the rage for a while. :|

But Bonnie is more badass than anyone, so.

The TVD fandom is one of the worst I've been in and as someone who's been in plenty, that's saying something.

At some point, this fandom has hated every single female character. Bonnie and the recurring characters (Rose, Jules, Isobel) tend to get the most of it but the fandom does like to spread it around and cover all their bases. Caroline & Katherine probably fair the best now but there was no small amount of hate for them back in season 1.

How gross. >:( I have to admit, I... generally tend to hate whoever the show tells me to hate, so I do kind of hate Jules and Isobel, but I also hate, like, John and Jonas. And the idea of anyone hating on Elena or Bonnie, who are both ridiculously amazing, is just a huge pile of WTF.

Bonnie IS flawless. I want to like Bonnie/Jeremy because I love them both as characters, but I just keep thinking how much better she is than him. >>

I'm a really casual watcher of TVD but I didn't like Bonnie for the longest time. She was overly controlling and kinda bitchy. The only reason I thought for people to like her was if they hated Damon and liked seeing her cut him down again and again. Then she hooked up with Jeremy and since I find them ADORABLE it's given me a new appreciation for Bonnie. Her attitude has been toned down a bit and I like that too. Bonnie isn't flawless, she was just treated by other characters as though she was.

So can you please tell me why you like her so much? I haven't met anyone who really, really liked her and I'm curious why you do.

For comparison, I like Elena (though I think she's almost painfully young), love Katherine, like Jules and Isobel, adored Lexie (dammit Damon!) and so on. Bonnie was my least favorite character for a while though I'm liking her more now in season two.

I don't even really know what to say because I really don't understand at all why people dislike Bonnie. Obviously saying she's flawless is hyperbole, but I've always thought she was a strong, fleshed-out character (even when the rest of the show pretty much blew) whose only crime seems to be not jumping onto team "yay vampires!" with everyone else.

I mean, yes, she's a judgmental person, but I like that her struggle is between loving and accepting her friends and judging what they do and who they do it with. I like that she's "bitchy" and "controlling," which to me just reads as being the one person around who knows what's going on and is like, "girl, no."

I mean, I really just don't get it. If your best friend was like, "Oh hey so my boyfriend is a quasi-reformed serial killer who is putting me and everyone we love in danger :D" I think that is a reason to be judgmental!

Beyond that, I liked in the beginning that she had her own stuff going on, and I think she's just grown into this brave, selfless, incredible young woman who is still trying to juggle her love for her friends with the fact that they knowingly do bad things and associate with bad people.

Thanks for writing back. :) And thanks too for being cool about my question. I've got favorite characters who fandom dislikes for strange reasons and when people tell me about their dislike, I'm always "wtf have you even watched the show??" so your patience with my question is pretty awesome.

I think Bonnie turned me off because her dislike was so extreme and heavy, even though she'd gotten to know Stefan before she found out that he's a vampire. Her automatic distrust of Caroline for instance as soon as she found out that Caroline had been turned, even though Caroline had been murderedm she hadn't chosen to become a vampire, and was still Caroline. If Bonnie had grown up fighting vampires, I would have the attitude but she didn't. She didn't know anything about it and came off as very judgmental about stuff she didn't have much insight into.

Yet, anyway.

I don't blame her for disliking Damon or anything, which I know is the reason why some Bonnie haters dislike her. I like Damon as a character but he's DANGEROUS and he only started to change when he realized that that behavior was going to isolate him from the people he loved. When people were letting him get away with it, he had no reason to change. Bonnie's distrust makes sense to me and is a good counter to the passive acceptance of the other characters.

I do like her a lot better now. Most of the characters are a lot more likeable than they were at the start of the first season, imo. Bonnie's development has been one of the most dramatic of any of the characters and I'm looking forward to what happens with her in the future.

Well... again, like, if you think "vampire," your first thought isn't "shiny happy people," it's "merciless killers." I mean, it was sad she distrusted Caroline, but Caroline also killed a guy her first night out, so it's not like Bonnie was wrong to think that she would. And remember, when Stefan and Damon were outed to her, a bunch of people had already died.

For most people, when it comes to vampires, the natural curve is not going from "trust" to "distrust". And I like that Bonnie still doesn't really trust vampires, especially Damon. Like you said, it's a badly-needed counterpart to everyone else, and to me she always has been.
