OP, you need to understand that Kidols are in no way indicative or representative of how all Koreans look. 99% of k-idols have had plastic surgery, and work out extensively to maintain their bodies.

although ngl I am genuinely curious as to how one can find kpop to be inspiring (ELASTIC ELASTIC ELASTIC etc), but to each their own I suppose.

long comment is long

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 12:40 am (UTC)(link)
oh man, anon, i know what you mean. k-pop has totally changed my attitude for the better. i feel a lot more confident and happy when i listen to the music. but at the same time, being involved in the fandom has definitely made me way more aware of my physical flaws, and much harder on myself for them ... so i guess it's sort of a false confidence. sigh. i guess that makes the following advice sort of hypocritical.

but please do remember, anon. they spend a lot of time working out and having professional stylists making sure they look beautiful, because being beautiful is a huge part of their job. i don't know if you saw those pictures that leaked a while back of 2NE1 without any make-up on, but they looked much, much different than they do with it on. almost all of those idols are wearing really thick layers of make-up and spending hours dancing and working out. it's just not practical for an "ordinary" person, and it shouldn't necessarily be.

i know that got tl;dr, but what i mean to say is, please please don't judge yourself by k-pop idol standards. we don't see everything that goes on behind the scenes. and i doubt you are even close to as fat, ugly, and unwanted as you think you are. ♥

This. I forgot to mention in my comment the important prevalence of stylists. They all have stylists and makeup artists and wardrobe coordinators.

Yes, basically this.

I would also like to add that maybe you could use them as inspiration? For me, certain groups have made me more willing to exercise/take care of my body. Use your love of them in a good way, don't use them to put yourself down.

For years and years I used to hate on make-up, until I realized it was just a tool for building self-confidence. It's amazing how transformative it is - and how yes, it's true, a LOT of what makes these celebrity women look nice is VERY good makeup.

OP, the truth is, beauty takes work. Sure, there's natural beauty, but Kpop starts aren't in the 'natural beauty' arena AT ALL, and looking like these women takes hours of styling every day.

The truth is, if you want to feel more confident and beautiful, you have the power to do so. Beyond just changing your mentality, just basic things like taking care of your skin, hair, face - tiny things that don't take long. I'd invest in something like cetaphil, or some other gentle facial cleanser, then also a good facial moisturizer (I get mine from etsy), and some light BB cream to start. Your skin will appear much more smooth, even, and soft, and it's amazing how much this will boost your self-esteem. Makeup isn't just something shallow vapid women use or care about, it can be a tool for all women to feel more glamorous and beautiful.

I CANT B PRIDDY BCUZ IM NOT KOREAN :(

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 01:20 am (UTC)(link)
ONLY KOREANS ARE BEAUTIFUL. OBVS.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-07 03:33 pm (UTC)(link)
This is basically true though... not even talking about the idols, either

haha girls generation does make me feel like a fatty sometimes. look at dem legs. ;__;

I have known Korean/Asian Americans who have spent most of their younger life trying to look like these guys up here. And they've spent most of their younger life being unhappy, self-dissatisfied people. Being Asian really has nothing to do with it, trust me. If you were in the Asian community you would have nearly everyone telling you you're not skinny enough, light-skinned enough, smart enough, talented enough, cute enough...just ugh.

Don't stress, OP. One day, you won't even realize it, but you'll just look up in the mirror and feel a little happiness. You're beautiful even if you're not like the plastic fantastics in kpop. And trust me, there's a lot of plastic fantastic there >_>

UNRELATED TO SECRET BUT KPOP ARGH

(Anonymous) 2011-05-05 05:21 am (UTC)(link)
Whatevs, maybe it's because I'm Korean, I'm just annoyed when people assume all Kpop is the autotuned droning like (ELASTIC ELASTIC ELASTIC). There are legitimately good singers out there with good songs, they just don't get as much exposure as the idols because ~omg so pretty and hawt~

I know I'm just being silly here but really, idols are more like the candy/sweets of the kpop scene. They're nice in moderation but not good for you when overexposed. There are more "balanced meals" out there. Sigh.

TL;DR Kpop isn't all about idols bawwww

There are plenty of k-pop fans who are 100% aware of how plastic elastic idols are, trust me. We're just... in the minority. Mostly I think people like it because Korea's really good at milking the "cult of celebrity" and having everyone doing >9000 variety shows and star in idol dramas and etc. etc. and making you fall in love with the idol. That's the point. It's not about the music, really, and if I were looking for good music I wouldn't be looking for it in the uber-mainstream commercial cashcow of any country's music scene. It's about the fantasy. Well, probably you already know this, I just feel like I need to defend myself :P

Anon, it would probably suck balls to be those people. You know how overworked idols are, right? You know how hard their management companies fuck them over, right (I mean, you've got DBSK there, you should know this shit)? You know that their schedules are crammed to the brim and lack of sleep (during promotion time some idols sleep less than 3 hours a night for weeks, ffs) and stress can drive them to exhaustion, collapse and illness (Hang Geng, remember him?)and mental illness (Joon, probably Leeteuk)? And then they have makeup slathered on them, they get IV'd and drink a bunch of energy drinks and go out and perform. They're perfect on the surface to cover up the fact that so many of them get destroyed on the inside by how fucked up the industry is. And that's not even counting all the other shit idols have to deal with. And yeah, there's something valiant there about how they keep on trucking despite their absolutely crazy schedules and how they get milked dry, but recognize that what they create is nothing but a surface to be enjoyed by the masses. Do you think most of them even get a modicum of creative freedom (JYJ went through hell to get theirs; Big Bang and Rain I think are the only ones who have any say on shit that goes on with them). They are beautiful at the expense of absolutely everything else. They create personas for you to idealize, but those personas aren't real. Their faces aren't real - those are makeup and photoshop and plastic surgery. Their bodies are sculpted by personal trainers, stylists and more photoshop. Their images are carefully crafted by their management companies and what they do and say is controlled by the companies that own them. Idols are 100% crafted perfections that are completely hollow inside and largely divorced from who they are away from the camera. You cannot be that. Even they couldn't be that without the help of an ENTIRE TEAM of artists and designers to create that idol image for them. You might as well aspire to be an anime character with physically impossible proportions: that's just as unrealistic.

...this has turned into a completely overlong rant, but I hope I made my point. Anyway I'd just like to say that I'm not dissing idols here... I love them for what they are, which is fake and constructed ideals, not something that can actually be attained.

As a Korean...

Get a grip. Yellow fever, much? Koreans are not a monolith where we all look like k-pop stars. It's like saying 'I want to be African-American so I can look like Beyonce' or 'I want to be British so I can look like Kate Moss'. Ridiculous.
