...There isn't really another name for them. Also echoing the disbelief at "oppressed." They're "poor." There's a difference.

Poor people ARE oppressed.

Honestly, I'm surprised at this comment. Classism is usually one of the few oppressions people actually acknowledge even when they're the type to refuse to admit other systemic oppressions are real. Hell - straight, white, middle-class dudes insisting things like, "Racism no longer exists on a systemic level, it's all just classism (which affects us downtrodden white guys, too!)," is a cliche, it happens with such predictable regularity.

Systemic racism most definitely exists. I do, however, think that in a lot of ways it's tied up with classism.

(perhaps OT) Perhaps the main reason the conservative power structure is still in place in the USA is that the elites of society have convinced people of lower social classes that they shouldn't be fighting for more economic equality by using issues of race as a wedge. Look at the years after Reconstruction or Nixon's "southern strategy" in the 1970s.

Martin Luther King's famous march on Washington was a "march for equality and jobs", something that's been pretty well glossed over by establishment historians.

And very nail-on-the-head there, yes. Not much for me to add here but, "yes."

Oppression within and that aimed at the LGBT community is also tied up with classism. Just look at the gay people portrayed on TV - they are almost all from middle class backgrounds/are professionals, although this is changing on British TV a bit.

In what way are they oppressed?

I'm not trying to be argumentative, I hope it doesn't come off like I am - it's just something I've not considered. We're all dead skint around my area, so it's not something I've had a chance to experience.

Well I'm from the US so I can only really speak for the Yoo-Nited States of Amurrica here, but...

The poor bear the brunt of the tax burden (which, of course, they have less money to pay). They're denied things like health care and educational opportunities--things that should be basic human rights--simply because they can't pay for them. And it goes further than that. Have you ever heard the phrase "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer"? That's what's been happening in the USA for pretty much the last century.

Chiming in just to agree with the above anon; at least in the Western nations where I know anything of class issues, there is a system in place to essentially punish people for being poor by making them poorer...and then say, basically, that poor people deserve it and brought it on themselves.

Being of a higher class (even middle class versus working class) gives you innumerable advantages off the top - like better health care, better education, and subtler, harder-to-define privileges like the ability to know the "right" way to dress or act sometimes, or having a better "network" within your profession.

Class privilege is usually generationally cumulative: higher-class people have children who remain that class or do better, while lower-class people can rarely manage to close the gap and fall farther behind with each passing generation that the issue is not addressed.

Black families, for example, in America have been subjected to generations worth of racialized economic discrimination. The result? The total net worth of the average black family is one-eighth that of the average white family.

I think this has just been a lack of education on my part. I'm not from the USA, but thinking about the stuff you've mentioned, I can see that it does affect people here as well. Living where I do, it's just not been something I've been confronted with since I was young.

I'm always glad to learn something, though this is all rather depressing actually. Thanks again for the explanations.

I know here in the UK it gets really mixed up, firstly because when people talk about greater social mobility they never really mean anyone should be moving down in power or social status, and that would be a necessary part of real mobility, and secondly because class is largely about social and cultural stuff, which is strongly linked to money, power and occupation, but the cause and effect are not quite the same way round as in many other places. This makes classism simultaneously easier to spot (once you pay attention) and more insidious (because it ties in to so many other things).

So a middle class family can have a lower income than a working class one, but still have longer life expectancy, greater access to the arts, more political power, a more socially useful network (Tabitha needs a job: who do her parents know?), and more positive portrayal in the media. Plus, a general confidence and expectation that things will go their way.

On a note about portrayals in the media, Doctor Who has actually been pretty good, all things considered, but Merlin has been shocking. Seriously, did you see the whole thing with the troll? Barely even disguised.

I think Doctor Who is pretty good about it. Just in terms of companions we've had someone from an estate (Rose), a professional (Martha), an ordinary office worker (Donna) and someone of undisclosed class (Amy). Actually that's a really interesting thing - Amy's class is sort of hard to judge, but seeing as she could afford a nice big house (I know there were the cracks but still!) on a kissogram's wage leads me to think her family had *some* money.

Interestingly in S6, we see her and Rory's flat without knowing their jobs, although presumably Rory's a nurse going by his comments in 6.02.

Soaps in the UK are also very interesting to explore from a class angle as they're probably the last bastion of celebrating lower income/working class life - and I love the movement towards portraying LGBT people from these backgrounds in them.

Economic oppression is still oppression. In fact, in a lot of ways it's much more damaging than political oppression.
