if you are actually saying that japan cares as much as, say, any western country

uh basically

no

I apologize for this rambling here

I...am very indecisive on how I feel about Wheatley.

I do think he needed to be punished, but...you gotta remember, he didn't have very much control over his actions since being attached to Glados' body was messing with his thoughts. Just think for a minute--twist the mind and force an addiction to science and testing onto something that was specifically built to make poor decisions: OF COURSE IT'S GOING TO MAKE BAD SHIT HAPPEN. What if you were attached to a machine that screwed you up a bit mentally and caused you to do horrible things--which, are things you would NEVER normally do under any other circumstance and you had no knowledge that this was going to happen to you beforehand, would you accept being launched into space to drift for a very long time (essentially, basically subjecting yourself to the same fate you had before meeting Chell---being alone for hundreds of years with only defective machines for company) as a suitable punishment for something that was beyond your control?

In fact, when he first attaches himself to the body and brings the escape pod up, if you stop and listen before going inside it, he actually says other things like "Oh wait, this body is too big to fit in the lift...oh I got it, all I gotta do is detach myself from here and then I can fit into the lift with you!", so he had every intention of still wanting to help you escape and want to come with you to the surface before the powertrip screwed him up. Plus, the creators did say that his apology at the end was sincere, so...

I think in the end, everything that happened to him was the result of bad-decision making all around and one stupid mistake of thinking that doing something like that was a good idea to get himself and Chell out of a horrible situation and that, really, everyone is at fault in some way for how things turned out, not just pushing all of the blame onto Wheatley.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 06:29 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I initially disliked him.

[identity profile] velvet-mace.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 06:32 am (UTC)(link)
You know, I honestly don't care if that's what you think of me.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 06:43 am (UTC)(link)
YANA.

OP here

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 06:44 am (UTC)(link)
Because for many people, Murdoc is a severe case of DO NOT WANT. Not the case with me, of course.

Also, DARE is rather awesome, and I fear the wrath of Noodle fans >.>;

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 06:47 am (UTC)(link)
I'm guessing from your response that you're curious about how he died in the manga, so . . .

SPOILERS, JUST IN CASE YOU DIDN'T WANT TO ACTUALLY KNOW:

In the manga, Matsuda shoots him a few times like in the anime, but at that point, Raito turns to Ryuuk, and begs Ryuuk to write down the names of everyone there in the warehouse. Ryuuk has a "You Have Outlived Your Usefulness" moment in that he comments on how it's not amusing anymore, he's had his fun, etc. He then reminds Light that he told him that he would be the one to write Light's name down in the end, and proceeds to do so. Light, bleeding to death on the floor already, starts screaming and begging and crying, screaming things like, "NO, I DON'T WANNA DIE, I DON'T WANNA DIE" etc., etc., until the 40 second heart attack claims him and he kicks the bucket.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 06:49 am (UTC)(link)
I disagree. Look at the difference between how Light is when he has the Death Note, and how he is during the arc where he gives up his memories. They're like two completely different people. Not only that, but after he first used the Death Note, he very nearly threw up with the knowledge that he killed two different people. The Death Note did corrupt him, and I believe it's stated somewhere that "anyone who uses a Death Note will experience misfortune for the rest of their lives."

Light wasn't a terrible person to begin with, just a normal person. The Death Note was just a tainted supernatural object that corrupted the negative qualities that were already inside him, is all. It would have done it to anyone else who used it as he did.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 06:52 am (UTC)(link)
I think we were reading a completely different manga, there were signs very early on that there was something wrong with Light. But I don't really care enough to argue about it.

[identity profile] lljscrawls.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
I mean, that just tells me that you can't back up your argument. We BARELY see him early in the manga before he gets the Death Note. All we see of him is that he's bored in school, and thinks that he experiences the same thing day in and day out. How many students feel that way? I often feel like I'm trapped in my life, that I'm bored with what's going on. Does that mean that I'm a horrible person? Does that mean that there's something wrong with me, that I'm going to go on a mass killing spree? Of course not! It just means that I'm a bored (now college) student.

The most we see of Raito without the Death Note influence is during the arc where he gives up his memories of it -- where he throws himself full force into finding and stopping Kira. He has absolutely no influence from the Death Note at that point, and the mangaka even stated in How To Read: 13 that that was the life he would have led had he never picked up the Death Note. I can go get the book out of my room, if you'd like, and find the exact quote.

So, I don't know, unless you think going into law enforcement to find world-class serial killers means you have something wrong with you and you're a terrible person, I really do think we were reading a different manga, because Light wasn't a horrible person to begin with -- the Death Note just corrupted him. Aside from which, it's not as if Ryuuk chose him -- it was pure chance that Raito happened to be the one to pick it up off the ground, and it wasn't Raito's "evilness" that made him interesting to Ryuuk, but rather, the schemes that he cooked up to hide what he was doing. It was only once he got caught that Ryuuk found him boring and wrote his name down.

Oh man.The butthurt has been rampant recently.

[identity profile] diorama23.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
Look, really it's isn't something I fan over, it's a series I enjoyed mildly and I have very little investment in the series, or the character. So when I say I don't care enough to argue with you about it, it's because I don't care enough about it to argue with you about it. Not for any other reason, and obviously you care enough about it. So more power to you and your perspective.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
Pretty sure I know who you're talking about, but even if I'm wrong, the writer I'm thinking about does the exact same thing, or she did in the wip I read of hers that's been going on for at least a couple years.

I think she's a wonderful technical writer and does a great job with tone, and evoking emotion and sympathy, but what bothers me the most is the repetition, and the 'lesson' we're supposed to get out of her pairing portrayal. I knew, going into the wip, that we didn't share kinks, but I went in anyway out of curiosity, and it's not the kinks or characterization that bothers me, so much as it's the insistence that evol!Sam conditioning slave!Dean is, at the end of the day, a good thing and that it's not really rape, honest it's not, because deep down, Dean wants it as much as Sam does. Sometimes it infuriates me on an irrational level, sometimes it makes me feel somewhat amused and further fascinated in this trend, and sometimes I'm ambivalent about it. So I do get what your frustration, and I guess all you can really do is keep writing or reading what you like, and hope that the trope at least wanes in popularity.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:14 am (UTC)(link)
All of the above, except it was Pages instead of Word and it was a Withnail/Kafka crossover. *chugs*

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:20 am (UTC)(link)
What I don't understand is why he appears to be floating at the end. He should be falling back to the lunar surface - I don't think the explosive decompression was powerful enough to kick him (and Space Core) into orbit around either the Moon or Earth.

[identity profile] omorka.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:22 am (UTC)(link)
Well, if a sentient house counts, I've written various S.A.R.A.H. fics for Eureka. If you're familiar with Moon, there are some Sam/GERTY fics written for Yuletide and other rare-fandoms fests that are pretty good.

[identity profile] nicheledres.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Hmm...that's an interesting comparison. I've never really thought of it like that, but you're totally right on.

[identity profile] nomorenoodles.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
I'm so sorry about your dad. :(

[identity profile] kuromitsu.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:23 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, go on believing that. The creators would probably laugh, but if believing this makes you feel better...

[identity profile] lostenergy.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 07:31 am (UTC)(link)
Being anonymous and criticizing someone else's opinion and choice is cowardly.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 07:33 am (UTC)(link)
The thing that I think causes the vast majority of fandom trigger wank is that no one in fandom knows what a trigger actually is.

Protip: if it pisses you off a bit or makes you feel a bit "ooky", it's not a trigger. If it makes you have a LEGITIMATE PANIC ATTACK, then and only then are you allowed to call it a trigger.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 07:38 am (UTC)(link)
You know, you really should, because right now you're just coming off as a dick to anyone reading this thread. When someone says "I hate the way people mock and belittle others for being disturbed and disgusted by the thought of someone getting off on the kind of trauma they've suffered," responding sarcastically that they're just 'taking it too personally' is a really shit move.

I was about comment on your description of Jared above, because I agree completely, but here's another thumbs-up from an anon. Matt Bomer, as handsome as he is, doesn't appeal to me for the same reason why Jensen (as pretty as he is) doesn't quite do it for me either: their eyes. Jensen's eyes are just a fraction too close to each other for ideal appeal, and so are Bomer's (though the shape of their eyes and their eyebrows are distinctly different, obviously). Jared's eyes are so gorgeous I don't care the least bit that his face is objectively less model-like. Just goes to show we all have our own "buttons".
