This could just be me, but I get the impression that people are getting access to fandom younger and younger. I mean, I'm only 21, but I'm still surprised when I see someone online who's under 16 or so, as I'd never even heard of the concept before then (and wasn't really able to get involved until I got my own computer at 18).

I think the rise in social networking sites are also a big factor-- they've created a kind of "tipping point"(Gladwell, anyone?) for younger kids to get an internet presence, and from there to get into fandom. Even though it seems like facebook has been around forever, it's really only been a few years, and it only became available for people not in college in, I believe, 2006. (I know there were plenty of networking sites before then, but I don't think they were quite so mainstream. I could be wrong, though.)

I am watching this series right now and I've just seen this scene. I love having great timing

Today we celebrate our Independence Day!

I liked him in Casper too :D

I'm so sorry about your dad! :( I just got my dad into Doctor Who, and it means a lot to me that he's now interested in it.

On a side note though - Amy's yes/no pregnancy is driving me CRAZY!
ext_439487: Quentin Tarantino's tragic lovers ([act: ML/DB] Der Himmel über Berlin)

I love love love it when actors and directors collaborate multiple times together, but I would love to see something different. It's like being offered all the cake you could want, and it's great, but after a while, you want some pie.

Quentin should put Johnny and Uma in something (more Uma in everything, I say!). And I almost feel bad because I had been waiting for The Rum Diary for so long that I forgot about it. So, yes! That is something new to look forward to!

old trolling is old. wankbait with something new.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 08:43 am (UTC)(link)
Haha, well I guess you'd be shipping Ernest/Ernest :P

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 08:44 am (UTC)(link)
I don't know. I've been involved with online fandom in some shape or form since I was 13 - and I'm 28. I think it's just the type of people the kids are (sports-oriented or more likely to want to stay inside), how much tech access they have, and what type of home environment they come from. Not to mention whether they're already geek inclined - I mean, I talked my parents into taking me to a Star Trek convention before I was 10.

I think it's more that fandom is now a whole lot easier for people who aren't, well, the type of baby geek I was, to find. It's no longer something you have to specifically seek out. Which also means that a lot of younger fans aren't sticking around for decades like they used to. Those of us who are basically lifers are no longer the dominant force in newer fandoms.

FYI, they're pretty flirty in the original play also if you care to read it. Very short and unceasingly witty: http://www.hoboes.com/FireBlade/Fiction/Wilde/earnest/

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 08:58 am (UTC)(link)
you should try watching the bbc drama that had him play a paedophile then

that'll fuck you up

[identity profile] corvigryph.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 09:00 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh I hate it when people get so caught up in status and musical snobbery that they completely disrespect peoplewho have been heled by, or just genuinly love a song or band.

Wave your GC flag, op and thanks for reminding me of this song (I loved it too)

[identity profile] pandir.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 09:14 am (UTC)(link)
Guess what OP means is that people found the scene with the old man squicky and disgusting, but Seb/Ciel and Claude/Alois a-okay.
Well, of course people like their shota more when both of them are good-looking - and most importantly, being a shota shipper doesn't automatically mean you're into rape/sexual abuse, OP. ;)

Although Kuroshitsuji II was trolling a lot, I can see no trolling here, the series just likes to make things really effed up.

Couldn't have phrased it better, anon!

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 09:19 am (UTC)(link)
no

it's only triggering if it triggers flashbacks and reminds you of the past

not just panic attacks

[identity profile] countess-k.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 09:27 am (UTC)(link)
Misogyny?

They're both guys.

*is confused*

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 09:43 am (UTC)(link)
Lol, why don't you just go back to your anon hole and stop bothering us Kurtofsky shippers with your unnecessary hate?

Should I?

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 09:47 am (UTC)(link)
Because I feel pretty damn brilliant.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 10:02 am (UTC)(link)
Okay, I get that. But the fact remains that the chance that you're going to change someone's mind is pretty damn slim. So why bother trying instead of doing your best to stay as far away from these things as you possibly can.

(Anonymous) 2011-05-14 10:09 am (UTC)(link)
lol what

you know triggering is an actual psychological term with a specific meaning right?

[identity profile] cloud-riven.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 10:32 am (UTC)(link)
iirc that was the year Nintendo had a press conference that made people whine incessantly about how "NINTENDO HAS ABANDONED US FOR CASUAL GAMERS". Jeez I don't remember any other specifics about Microsoft's or Sony's, other than that no one would stop whining.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-05-14 10:36 am (UTC)(link)
Ah, but if the writers can get the audience to the point where they feel sympathy...then it gets interesting...
