(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 06:26 am (UTC)(link)Fandom really needs to quit being butthurt about his popularity when the Chell and GLaDOS love hasn't been swept under the rug at all. As someone already pointed out here before Portal is about portals and technology. It's not some miraculous game for the women's movement just because it has some cool ladies in it. Granted that's nice, but there's a lot of hate for Wheatley just because he's male and that pisses me off.

As for the "marry" bit, well, I'm nowhere near there with Wheatley. Maybe a hug. And yet, GLaDOS is sexy as hell ♥, even though I tend to be attracted to men more often than women. So. It seems to me that Wheatley would be more popular with the teenage fanatics, and they're... loud. :V

theirChell's undying love. And pretend he didn't try to actively kill you, and that GLaDOS is worse no.All sorts of awkward.
Still thought he was hilarious though. Kind of hard for me to dislike anyone in that game.
Massive Rant Ahead, I'm Sorry
(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 02:29 am (UTC)(link)--His personality shifts so drastically so fast that it's ridiculous to chalk it up to regular character evolution. The only explanations that make sense are that he was playing you the entire time or that he's been sort of "possessed" by the body. And let's face it, Wheatley is NOT smart enough to pull off that kind of deception.
--GLaDOS makes a point of telling you about the testing protocols and their addictive nature, and it's pretty clear (as well as implied by GLaDOS) that he lacks the willpower she has, so of course he becomes a slave to it. Plus, we don't entirely know what other bits of code are built in to the system that can drive its current core crazy in all sorts of ways. Certainly the power alone is far more than he was ever designed to wield, and who knows what that would do to an AI?
--Even GLaDOS starts to get a little more bearable once she's ripped out of her body. I don't think rediscovering Caroline is enough to make Caroline/her conscience resurface, since she simply tries to delete Caroline once she's plugged back in. The change isn't very drastic, but she WAS plugged in for a very long time. It would take more than a few hours to reverse the damage IF it was the body that drove her crazy. (I'm not suggesting that I think it definitely was, only that it's possible). Also, Wheatley reverts back to his old self and shows regret for his actions once he is unplugged. Neither example is proof on its own -- GLaDOS's improvement is just as easily attributed to her humiliation and loss of power, while Wheatley's remorse could also be attributed to being stuck in space. But when you take BOTH into consideration... it's at least a bit suggestive.
So yeah, um, that was long. Sorry. But basically, I just can't hold him entirely accountable. I believe that the power trip and rage are definitely the result of his own insecurity about his intelligence. And I'm not delusional enough to believe he and Chell were total BFFs. I know he mostly needed her to escape. Whether some small measure of friendship grew between the two is entirely up to interpretation, but there's no direct evidence of it. AND, it's implied in the final battle that he harbors some resentment towards Chell for pretty much being the source of all the suffering in his life. (Which, admittedly, is a little bit true.) But still, even considering those three things, would he really have gone so far if it weren't for the mind screw he got at the hands of GLaDOS's body? I mean it's pretty obvious that Valve was trying to show that he'd been seriously altered by GLaDOS's body, so it just comes down to how much of his behavior you blame on the body and how much you blame on him. That's not as clearly defined, but for me, normal!Wheatley and evil!Wheatley are so radically different that I almost think of them as different characters.
Note: Yes, I am one of his fangirls, I'll admit it. But the part of me that just wrote an unneccessarily long comment was actually the How-Dare-You-Have-A-Different-Character-Interpretation-From-Me Nerd, who I blame on my English Lit classes.
No worries, brosis. I like this rant :)
But I'd say they're both redeemable, or definitely capable of being selfless or fostering some emotion to humans, because they still come back to aid your player character (Wheatley could have just left you behind and cowed in the background after he was crushed and the facility was no longer in danger; GLaDOS didn't need to pull you back in from space). They definitely need and use you for their own goals, but still have enough attachment to stick their neck out for you.
I don't know. Between the apology and the clearly not-euthanized companion cube, I came out of that game thinking they actually could have been triple bffs if two of them weren't robots crafted by crazy people.

Re: Massive Rant Ahead, I'm Sorry
I don't actually believe the "I'm rid of you because you are too much trouble" thing, consider the army of turrets she planted out there. I think it's GLaDOS being, my my my, "good", without wanting to lower her pride to admit it.

Hell, Vincent Price kept his face 90% immobile in The Abominable Dr Phibes and chewed the scenery like whoa.

As for the rest of the secret: yes, yes, we know.

(Disclaimer: haven't played the game, but love Mr. Merchant's voice.)

(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 01:30 am (UTC)(link)Then what can we call him?
(Anonymous) 2011-06-02 04:14 am (UTC)(link)Personally I just call him England because I see him as England, not as the entire UK. I refer to the UK as what they are separately. Though if you see him as the entire UK then I do understand your point.
But really, everyone is SO insatiable about this. We can't call him Britain, we can't call him England, we can't call him UK, so then what can we call him?
I guess I'll just stick with Arthur Kirkland then.

This stood out more to me than his heel face turn.
I still sort of *like* Wheatley in small doses. But small doses only.

I don't understand the fangirls that really love him, but I ended up liking him for being so pathetic. If his intelligence didn't seem to drop heavily once he was in Glados' body, I probably would have just thought of him as pure annoying.

I don't know many English actresses (or actors in general), that's all I've got.

So yeah, you obviously aren't the only person who doesn't like him, OP. There's PLENTY of people who just aren't fans of him, which is fine! Just because he IS popular doesn't mean you HAVE to like him.
And I definitely don't think he's popular just because he's voiced by a guy (though Stephen Merchant's an absolutely hilarious and fantastic actor, I don't think Wheatley could really BE Wheatley without him. I never liked the Richard Lord voice). Because GLaDOS has TONS of fanboys and fangirls. Chell too, especially after she got all sexy with Portal 2 redesign.
