I kind of hear you. My tumblr dash is full of people who really want to bone that robot. Or, more specifically, a humanized version of the robot that would requite their Chell's undying love. And pretend he didn't try to actively kill you, and that GLaDOS is worse no.

All sorts of awkward.

Still thought he was hilarious though. Kind of hard for me to dislike anyone in that game.

Massive Rant Ahead, I'm Sorry

Now hold on, hold on. Not liking him is totally fair (although I realize you do like him), but it always throws me off when people bring up the trying-to-kill-you part as a reason that he's unlikeable. The game makes it pretty clear GLaDOS's body has royally fucked him in the head at that point.

--His personality shifts so drastically so fast that it's ridiculous to chalk it up to regular character evolution. The only explanations that make sense are that he was playing you the entire time or that he's been sort of "possessed" by the body. And let's face it, Wheatley is NOT smart enough to pull off that kind of deception.

--GLaDOS makes a point of telling you about the testing protocols and their addictive nature, and it's pretty clear (as well as implied by GLaDOS) that he lacks the willpower she has, so of course he becomes a slave to it. Plus, we don't entirely know what other bits of code are built in to the system that can drive its current core crazy in all sorts of ways. Certainly the power alone is far more than he was ever designed to wield, and who knows what that would do to an AI?

--Even GLaDOS starts to get a little more bearable once she's ripped out of her body. I don't think rediscovering Caroline is enough to make Caroline/her conscience resurface, since she simply tries to delete Caroline once she's plugged back in. The change isn't very drastic, but she WAS plugged in for a very long time. It would take more than a few hours to reverse the damage IF it was the body that drove her crazy. (I'm not suggesting that I think it definitely was, only that it's possible). Also, Wheatley reverts back to his old self and shows regret for his actions once he is unplugged. Neither example is proof on its own -- GLaDOS's improvement is just as easily attributed to her humiliation and loss of power, while Wheatley's remorse could also be attributed to being stuck in space. But when you take BOTH into consideration... it's at least a bit suggestive.

So yeah, um, that was long. Sorry. But basically, I just can't hold him entirely accountable. I believe that the power trip and rage are definitely the result of his own insecurity about his intelligence. And I'm not delusional enough to believe he and Chell were total BFFs. I know he mostly needed her to escape. Whether some small measure of friendship grew between the two is entirely up to interpretation, but there's no direct evidence of it. AND, it's implied in the final battle that he harbors some resentment towards Chell for pretty much being the source of all the suffering in his life. (Which, admittedly, is a little bit true.) But still, even considering those three things, would he really have gone so far if it weren't for the mind screw he got at the hands of GLaDOS's body? I mean it's pretty obvious that Valve was trying to show that he'd been seriously altered by GLaDOS's body, so it just comes down to how much of his behavior you blame on the body and how much you blame on him. That's not as clearly defined, but for me, normal!Wheatley and evil!Wheatley are so radically different that I almost think of them as different characters.

Note: Yes, I am one of his fangirls, I'll admit it. But the part of me that just wrote an unneccessarily long comment was actually the How-Dare-You-Have-A-Different-Character-Interpretation-From-Me Nerd, who I blame on my English Lit classes.

No worries, brosis. I like this rant :)

But I think you mistook, or read too much into what I said. I'm referring to essentially giving him a free pass due to the whole GLaDOS chassis corrupting everything connected to it, but denying that same doubt for GLaDOS. They're both passive aggressive when not attached, although Wheatley is more genuine about his remarks where GLaDOS is usually sarcastic and a liar. "Genuine" doesn't necessarily mean kind though. I thought it was pretty clear that robots in Aperture, aside from Different Turret, have a severe superiority complex to people.

But I'd say they're both redeemable, or definitely capable of being selfless or fostering some emotion to humans, because they still come back to aid your player character (Wheatley could have just left you behind and cowed in the background after he was crushed and the facility was no longer in danger; GLaDOS didn't need to pull you back in from space). They definitely need and use you for their own goals, but still have enough attachment to stick their neck out for you.

I don't know. Between the apology and the clearly not-euthanized companion cube, I came out of that game thinking they actually could have been triple bffs if two of them weren't robots crafted by crazy people.

I like your interpretation a lot. :) It makes a ton of sense to me, especially since GLaDOS did give back the first game's companion cube. It's a curious ending considering she fried two of the companion cubes in the second one and was like 'oh, we have a whole warehouse full of them. Entirely worthless.' so I'd say she was just trying to make Chell feel even worse for believing she destroying that first companion cube (or for having an attachment to it in the first place).

Overall I adore how complex GLaDOS is. It's so nice to see a game with definite thought and background behind it, and even though Wheatley NEVER SHUT UP, I didn't find him annoying, and also thought the quick shift in personality was because of GLaDOS' body. I also recall that comment from Wheatley about smelly humans, then quickly apologizing, though it was clear he also believed himself above people.

I'm more likely to believe in this theory if after GLaDOS was plugged back in, she went ahead with making Chell as miserable as possible.

I don't actually believe the "I'm rid of you because you are too much trouble" thing, consider the army of turrets she planted out there. I think it's GLaDOS being, my my my, "good", without wanting to lower her pride to admit it.
