I (as a non-slasher) actually find the logic behind that phenomenon pretty simple.

Society encourages people to be heterosexual. Identifying as gay/trans/some other non-standard means that you believe enough in your sexuality to risk the backlash, and there will be backlash. Identifying as straight, on the other hand, is safe and acceptable.

I get that the prevalence of slash in fandom grates on some fans, but unless we're following a male character around with a very explicit first person POV (complete with thoughts like "Man, I would bang that chick two ways to Sunday. No dudes. Just her.") than nobody can say a straight character isn't just in denial/in fear/thinking of their job/what-have-you.
