Ah, I have a cousin who's always asking me stuff about DW episodes he hasn't seen yet, or spoilery explanations. To which I answer "Spoilers, sweetie!" - but oh, he insists. He is 12 years old though. Aand I had a conversation with my mum this very evening, she telling me how much she hated watching episodes one by one (we did start with 6-7 eps DW marathons, so...) and that next 1/2 season she was just going to wait for the whole thing to be broadcast.

And the conclusion of this uninteresting blathering is: I know how you feel. Serves me right for converting them, but yeah, I found I rather liked waiting for this stuff and wondering etc. It's made to be primarily watched like that, after all. And then there'll be marathoning to straighten things in my head.

To which I answer "Spoilers, sweetie!"

this is so condescending it actually made me laugh.

It was for the quote. IRL I just flail and go: 'gnn-rgh, spoilers!'

I enjoy a show more when I know the ending...

I don't see how wanting to know the end of something is any more ridiculous than insisting that you not know a single detail until you see it for yourself, and tons of people do that. Different people have different ways of enjoying media.

Well, does he still want to watch the show after he knows the spoilers? If he does, I don't see the harm in letting him in on them. Some people actually like to know what's going to happen, but are still very interested in watching the progress, as well. On the other hand, if he's one of those people who hears then end of a series, and just drops it, then yeah, I can see how that would be annoying.

lol i think you need couple's counseling

MTE. You seem to be taking far too much glee in making your S.O upset, OP. Especially if it lasts for months.

That...isn't exactly healthy.

You should make him watch Sherlock! He'd go mental waiting for the next series.

seconding this! was going to write the very same thing when opened the comments.
also, the series is really very good, even putting the end aside.

Oh God, I'm dealing with this right now, except with my mom of all people. I just got her into Battlestar Galactica and I watched the first few episodes with her and every few minutes she'd ask me "does he die? "does she die?" "do they find Earth?" "do they find out about Baltar?" "do Starbuck and Apollo get together?" I had to tell her I couldn't watch anymore with her because she asks questions more than she actually watches the show and then I have to tell her what happened because she wasn't paying attention and was instead grilling me on what was going to happen later. She STILL calls me while she's watching and asks me about stuff that I have to tell her JUST WAIT AND SEE. It would be one thing if she just wanted to know a couple of things, but she basically wants me to just verbally tell her the entire BSG story and I'm thinking, what's the point of watching it at all then?

[identity profile] beandelphiki.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 11:21 am (UTC)(link)
Ugh, this, "I won't tell you spoilers you child, sit down and wait," attitude (from the OP and other people in this thread), is so rude.

I can wait if I'm forced to, and sometimes I enjoy that. Sometimes it's really exciting and magical to get the story as it comes. In those cases, I don't like to be spoiled. (Although I don't think it's a big deal if I am.)

But, depending on the storyline, I may be so anxious (in a bad way, not in a good, "ooh, suspense!" way) about the future events that I literally cannot enjoy what's happening unless I'm prepared and braced for it. In some cases, I will end up not watching the show at all because I literally cannot force myself to watch it if I don't know what's going to happen - the anxiety gets paralyzing.

So people who think they're being clever and sophisticated by refusing to "spoil" things really piss me the fuck off. Would it fucking kill you to drop the major plot points? I don't go around spoiling people if it's their preference not to be spoiled, could you pay me the same respect? I mean, if it's available to look up on the internet, I'll do that because it's inevitable that actually asking someone will generate a patronizing response. I (and other people who prefer to be spoiled) aren't children, we watch it differently.

People enjoy media in different ways. The joy is in the process, you know? If you don't know where something is headed, the element of surprise is great. If you do know where something is headed, it's just as much fun watching the events that lead up to it unravel.
