My problem with fHawke was that she seems like a typical alpha male in all the relationships s/he gets in, which was a little jarring for me. Before people jump on me, it's possible to be a strong character in a relationship- male or female- without going all out standard alpha male dominate errybody grrr I am king of mountain. FShep didn't have the same issue... all imho ofc.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. Because aggressiveness is totally a completely male attribute, right? Female athletes don't really want to win or do anything aggressive to do it, because it's unfeminine! Women never get into shouting matches! Women never kick ass or take names!

And it's not that aggressiveness is an individual trait, oh no. Heaven forbid we have a woman be aggressive enough to stand up to at least one leader of powerful factions within a city, a woman aggressive enough or confident enough to claw her way upward from a penniless refugee to one of the top dogs in Kirkwall. And it's ludicrous to think that a woman who did what she had to in order to get what she wanted - security, prosperity - would find herself an equal in romantic relationships, because like hell is F!Hawke a "typical alpha male" in those four relationships. Go take a second look there, cupcake, I'll wait.

Done? Good. Here's the thing: F!Hawke can be tender with Merrill. Is that typically an alpha male response? She can also be kind to Fenris, be playful with Isabela, be devoted to Anders, and all of these people can be really fucking hard to love. Tell me these are all "typical alpha male" responses. Go on. Because I really want to hear from you how if those qualities belong to men and only men, what's left for us women, because you seem to have narrowed that particularly field down to something very few women would want to play in.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrug* It's my personal opinion. I can dislike playing what seemed to me to be a woman who was constantly aggressive or dominant in relationships if I want to, chill out. Not everybody likes playing a dominant woman, and it's not only women that are dominant and aggressive in relationships that are capable of clawing their way up a social ladder, it would have been nice to see that. Even with Merrill it was almost always an "I know better than you" feeling as opposed to equals anyways.

Calling me cupcake isn't winning you points on the sexism meter either.

NA, was just about to point this out. Gotta love those weekend SJ warriors who get outraged at everyone else but are blind to their own fail

Calling anyone cupcake is ableist, not sexist. You don't know who over the internet might have celiac disease.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
It's not ableist, it's just condescending as fuck.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Says you. I say it's ableist. Who are you to tell me what isn't ableist?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
No-one.

I just get to mock you for it.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 11:47 pm (UTC)(link)
I just get to mock you for it.

Nice. Go check your privilege, you twit.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 12:42 am (UTC)(link)
Hahaha, why don't you check your sociology books. Because that's the only place this nonsense is taken seriously.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-06 12:31 am (UTC)(link)
Wait... uh... what?
Would someone please explain this to me?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:45 pm (UTC)(link)
SJ warriors? In Dragon Age fandom? WHAT. NO. After Awhoreagate? You're joking. Please tell me more.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 09:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Awhoreagate?

WHAT DID I MISS?!?!?!

This sounds De-Licious!

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 09:59 pm (UTC)(link)
The usual story. Someone on swooping_is_bad expressed that they didn't care for Anora, and called her "A-whore-a" offhand.

The fandom tripped all over itself trying to shame her, and the mods sat on their hands and did nothing until it was practically over, making "shame on you" noises and sending people to time out, and there was a lot of public angst about feelings and respect and sexism and whatever. And thus began the fandom's nosedive on livejournal.

[identity profile] anthropomorphe.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 04:14 pm (UTC)(link)
I called Mihoshi from Bakuman, "Miwhoreshit".

...Because I'm a mature and capable person. :|

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:37 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't think calling you cupcake is sexist, because you gave no indication as to your gender in your original comment. What you did indicate is that you are a very precious delicate soul for whom the idea of playing a pixelated woman in situations where she might have to be aggressive is enough for you to need a fainting couch, which could've gone either way. A cupcake is a small usually pastel confection with very little actual nutritional value, which is how your comment struck me: delicate, vapid, and with zero intellectual value.

For the record: I never said that only women who are dominant and aggressive in relationships are capable of clawing their way up a social ladder. You're the one trying to stuff those words into my mouth.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I didn't mean that you said it, I said that the game seems to be implying it. And ? who needs a fainting couch? I expressed personal dislike of a minor degree, don't blow everything out of proportion here.

How about just not calling people cupcake, which is a longstanding derogatory feminine term?

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
lol u so mad

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:43 pm (UTC)(link)
go back to sf_d where you and all the other ~enlightened~ ~important~ people can continue to pat yourselves on the back for making absolutely no difference in the world whatsoever

(Anonymous) 2011-06-06 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Right. Because aggressiveness is totally a completely male attribute, right?

Uh, it's not completely a male attribute. But it is primarily a male attribute.

Say what you want about men and women being equal, but we do have our differences in biology. Aggressiveness and assertiveness is something that is more commonly found in males than females (not just in humans, but in any species), so it's not surprising that many female players won't relate to a woman who acts in an "alpha male" esque way.

[identity profile] sophiesenoo.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 04:31 am (UTC)(link)
Aggressiveness =/= assertiveness. Assertiveness can be learned. Also, I don't know where you are getting this "in any species" is just bullshit.

[identity profile] sophiesenoo.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 04:34 am (UTC)(link)
*that is just bullshit

(Anonymous) 2011-06-06 04:32 am (UTC)(link)
Uh, females are typically very aggressive in nature. See the 'momma bear' trope. There's a reason that exists. And in humans female teens are far crueler to each other than males. But stereotypes are far easier to regurgitate than reality.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-06 04:37 am (UTC)(link)
You obviously don't know a thing about biology or sociology. Go read a study (a real study) and then we talk.

Also, you view about the "other species" it's pretty anthropocentric.
