My problem with fHawke was that she seems like a typical alpha male in all the relationships s/he gets in, which was a little jarring for me. Before people jump on me, it's possible to be a strong character in a relationship- male or female- without going all out standard alpha male dominate errybody grrr I am king of mountain. FShep didn't have the same issue... all imho ofc.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:18 pm (UTC)(link)
Right. Because aggressiveness is totally a completely male attribute, right? Female athletes don't really want to win or do anything aggressive to do it, because it's unfeminine! Women never get into shouting matches! Women never kick ass or take names!

And it's not that aggressiveness is an individual trait, oh no. Heaven forbid we have a woman be aggressive enough to stand up to at least one leader of powerful factions within a city, a woman aggressive enough or confident enough to claw her way upward from a penniless refugee to one of the top dogs in Kirkwall. And it's ludicrous to think that a woman who did what she had to in order to get what she wanted - security, prosperity - would find herself an equal in romantic relationships, because like hell is F!Hawke a "typical alpha male" in those four relationships. Go take a second look there, cupcake, I'll wait.

Done? Good. Here's the thing: F!Hawke can be tender with Merrill. Is that typically an alpha male response? She can also be kind to Fenris, be playful with Isabela, be devoted to Anders, and all of these people can be really fucking hard to love. Tell me these are all "typical alpha male" responses. Go on. Because I really want to hear from you how if those qualities belong to men and only men, what's left for us women, because you seem to have narrowed that particularly field down to something very few women would want to play in.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:11 pm (UTC)(link)
i'm the opposite. i love f!hawke and dislike the prevalence of m!hawke in fanwork (especially with fenris. imo he gets reduced to that 'shorter, smaller and therefore more vulnerable uke' stereotype too much) so i more or less read f!hawke fic exclusively.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:24 pm (UTC)(link)
..Really? I can't stand most f!hawke/fenris fanworks. He ends being some alpha male which is hilarious

>reduced to that 'shorter, smaller and therefore more vulnerable uke' stereotype

But that's what he was in the game?

Stereotypes can be done well and fleshed out to be sympathetic and realistic, which Fenris was. And obvs a vulnerable uke or whatever wasn't all he was. But if you're actually saying he's not vulnerable and that he's totally dominant or sth... what game did you even play? What the hell?

Four of my five characters have been male Hawke. A lot of people bitch and moan about femHawke's VA or overly girly running animation (the latter I agree with totally). As for me... Don't ask for any one specific example because I can't think of any off the top of my head, but overall I don't feel like they did as well with making Hawke as "unisex" as Revan or Shepard. Hawke for me will always be a man, just like how Revan defies SW cannon in my head by forever being a mute woman.

[identity profile] kylenne.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 08:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Funny that you say that, because to me Hawke will never be anything but female, and she looks nothing at all like the official artwork, to the point where it's jarring. (My Hawke was a redhead with the Bethany haircut and a huge underbite). I actually had to quit my second playthrough, when I rolled a male Hawke, because it felt all fucking wrong to me. Everything about him screamed generic "gritty" fantasy hero to me, down to his flat voice acting. (Really, people complain about femHawke's voice? o.O I thought her VA was vastly superior to maleHawke's, which is the other reason I had to quit that playthrough.) It just goes to show that everyone gets different things out of Bioware games and everyone's headvision is different (personally, I got real tired real quick of f!Cousland's oversaturation in Origins fanworks, but that's just me).

I am with you on Revan, though. Mine's a black woman. And married to Bastila.

overly girly running animation

This is a complaint that upsets me. :( As someone with oversized hips it's actually awesome to see an animated character who moves like I do. I kind of think of it as "girly animation, just different!girly", because... well, a girl who runs like a girl is just as girly as one who doesn't.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Meh, I like FHawke. I can't read the fic because most of them sound like self-inserts

which it kinda is

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:30 pm (UTC)(link)
Urgh I can't stand her voice especially with the default model

[identity profile] bonefield.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 08:51 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't beat yourself up for your personal preferences. I can't play MShep and I can't play FHawke, just because my perceptions of the characters are already set and playing anything else feels weird to me. That's why everyone has the option to customize their own characters, and unless your dislike of FHawke is based on something silly like, "I just can't see a female character as the hero of a fantasy story, because it's unrealistic!" (I have actually seen this), I wouldn't worry about it. Heck, part of my reason for liking MHawke so much is because I loved being able to cast a gay man in the role of lead asskicker, complete with Epic Romantic Subplot. As long as you're not running around judging other people for their preferences, it's all good.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 08:56 pm (UTC)(link)
I hate F!Hawke's smugfuck voice. Absolutely everything she says, even the 'nice' options, come out sounding like she's wearing the biggest SA :smug: face. I don't know what M!Hawke is like (tbh I only got to the point in the game after the Qunari left with F!Hawke, after that I completely lost interest) but he can't be worse than her.

It's a shame because FemShep's voice is absolutely spot-on and I love her as a character. Voice acting is INCREDIBLY important for games since it conveys almost all the emotion, and to use such an unlikeable tone for the main character is dumb as hell.

lol butthurt F!Hawke fans

[identity profile] wild-euphoria.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)
I like both, but I prefer fic of m!Hawke because people have a tendency to write f!Hawke too submissive for my tastes (I have a thing for dominant/aggressive women, heh). The reverse is true for Mass Effect fics - I generally like the way people write f!Shepards.

Don't beat yourself up over it, anon.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
I don't see the rage for Female Hawke but people's preferences are always different. I actually started my first play-through with F!Hawke but changed right after. Just do what you want anon.

[identity profile] deciphre.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried playing with F!Hawke, and couldn't for some reason. (Can't put my finger on it. It just felt off.)
I think you're fine, OP.

[identity profile] justaminuet.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 10:12 pm (UTC)(link)
That's okay, OP. Like who you like, and dislike who you dislike. I'll keep my awesome Fem!Hawke, and her naturally aggressive nature that enabled her to kick all sorts of ass, and make pretty much everyone respect her for it. Sometimes certain characters just don't click with you, and that's okay. I have friends who adore DAII!Anders, and I just wanted him to DIAF.

[identity profile] roadconezombie.livejournal.com 2011-06-05 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
I tried to play as an F!Hawke once. (find the keyword there) I just found her so.... eh. I can't describe it. If he I hear all the witty liners in m!Hawke's voice, I laugh. But hearing the same thing in her voice feels like nails on a chalkboard.

And when it comes to fandom, I exitted stage left a long time ago.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-05 10:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It's alright, anon, I have a similiar problem with F!Hawke, though it's for different reasons. Of course, it's mostly because I seem completely incapable of playing a F!Hawke that romances anyone.

Because for some reason, in my head all my F!Hawkes are in love with Varric.

Stupid sexy Varric.

[identity profile] rosehiptea.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 01:29 am (UTC)(link)
I don't see where you have anything to feel bad about. I almost always prefer female characters and het or femslash, other people feel differently, it's all good.

(Sure, there is female character bashing out there but I don't see where you're engaging in it at all.)

[identity profile] magnetic-regina.livejournal.com 2011-06-06 03:20 am (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* People like what they like. Some people prefer the f!versions, some prefer the m!version as long as you don't shame people for liking something different or stating your preference as a fact, it doesn't mattter.

I feel the same way. About M!Hawke.

I tried to play him once but gave up halfway through act one. His VA is very meh compared to F!Hawke.

I personally always play as male characters. It's my personal preference and I don't jump at you if you prefer M!Hawke (or F!Hawke). I hate it how many people immediately start bitching that you must hate your own gender and blah blah blah whine whine bitch bitch if you don't like the female option. It's ridiculous and doesn't make them any better from the sexist males. My reasons for prefering male characters are because I find the roleplaying more fun with them...and of course, they are nicer to watch ^_^. And some characters... they just are males in my head canon. So yeah! I understand what you mean.

+1
