SO MUCH AGREE. I've seen that actress look absolutely stunning, but as Fleur she's just so 'meh' it almost hurts.

I don't care about the wank -- I agree with you :P

[identity profile] danaphilip.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 12:15 am (UTC)(link)
Because~

No actress is allowed to appear more attractive than the leading female. (In this case Emma Watson).

I dunno, I thought she was plenty hot as is.

*shrug* Tastes differ. I thought she was lovely.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-09 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I thought she was absolutely gorgeous as Fleur.

[identity profile] hoopyfroodyford.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 12:29 am (UTC)(link)
I think she's stunning IRL, and very beautiful in the film, but Fleur is supposed to be inhumanly beautiful. Beyond gorgeous. She's part-Veela, she's not even fully human! She's said to glow, and even make those around her appear more beautiful as well. So I agree, they kind of fell flat on that one. It would be a hard task to make someone look that stunning without looking fake, but I think they could have done more.

I thought it was less that she was ACTUALLY "ravishingly gorgeous" and more that her Veela blood made her SEEM that way to the male members of the population (and that because we're seeing the books through Harry's eyes, she came off as being stunningly beautiful). I could be wrong, but that's how I always took it.

Either way, I never paid too much attention to Fleur, so. xD

[identity profile] wottie.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 12:35 am (UTC)(link)
Meh. She wasn't inhumanly beautiful or anything, but if I saw her walking down the street I'd still stop and gawk at how lovely she looks, so I think the desired effect is more or less achieved.

[identity profile] roguebelle.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 12:39 am (UTC)(link)
You may not need it, but it sure can help. (And I say this as a girl who doesn't use much, but who uses it to good effect). /bad-feminist

I wish Fleur looked more ethereal, personally. I mean, I know they pretty much skipped over the whole part-veela thing, but I want to see that edge of non-human beauty in her, that glamour.

I've been saying this forever! I don't understand how it could be possible to take a woman as stunning as Clémence Poesy and make her so plain. I mean, her features were still the same, but I see shots of her where she probably spent a lot less time prepping where she looks absolutely amazing. Really, what was going on there??

[identity profile] ronsard.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I don't get it either. When I hear people complain about the actress not being beautiful enough for the role I always want to be like, "Pfffttt what you talkin' about?!" but I have to admit the styling she got in the films is just awful. Styling is not just about makeup, and Poesy can look amazing with minimal makeup if she had the right hair and clothes.

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
See, I always thought she was sort of too classically beautiful, whereas I thought of Fleur as sort of...over-the-top beautiful. Like professional-cheerleader rather than classic old-timey model. But IDK.

[identity profile] agentak.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 01:15 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. Most of the time it looks like she just woke up at four am, threw her hair back and that was it. She's a really pretty actress, how could the make-up team screw that up?!

[identity profile] hako-neko.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 01:39 am (UTC)(link)
She was really pretty in the movie-- that movie was just incredibly dull and they totally watered down her part.

Did you see her briefly in DH pt1? She was gorgeous there!

[identity profile] visiblemarket.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I'm always just struck by how much she reminds me of Claire Danes.

1. Because Emma Watson.

2. I think she was very beautiful in the movie, in a very classic sort of way. She plays such a minor role in the GoF and DH movies as it is that it seems almost foolish to distract from the main story line with this BOMB ASS BABE on screen ever so briefly because you get Dan Rad back. I, for one, know that I would be lamenting that the hot chick was gone and never to be seen or heard from again instead of being interested in Harry Potter's wonderful adventures.

I also have such a terrible crush on Clémence Poesy it isn't even fully. icon very much related.

3. They wrote out the veela story line almost completely, and in GOF she was still in school. She probably was too preoccupied with the tournament to be super pretty. She looked fantastic during the Yule Ball scene. Also during the DH scene with the 7 Harrys she was made to look very attractive.

[identity profile] helikesitrough.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 02:34 am (UTC)(link)
I actually agree. I mean, she looks beautiful in non-Fleur attire.

What happened? It's not sexist or anti-'au natural' to understand what Veela are canon-wise. SIRENS, basically. She doesn't look the part of alluring "I can make a man crash his ship and not regret it" that the books have that race being. :/

[identity profile] robintheshrew.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 03:37 am (UTC)(link)
Really? I don't think it's possible for her to look meh
ext_24538: (ad} gotta be a better way to say that.)

[identity profile] xbriyeon.livejournal.com 2011-06-09 03:46 am (UTC)(link)
NGL, this.

my friend and I were always confused as to why she of all people was cast as Fleur -- then I saw pictures of her outside of Harry Potter and was like "okay films, what the hell are you doing wrong this time o___o"

(Anonymous) 2011-06-09 03:50 am (UTC)(link)
huh. I guess this is just textbook YMMV. She didn't exactly match my mental picture for Fleur, but when I first saw her onscreen my jaw dropped, insta-crush and I never looked back.

Still, I get what you and other commenters are saying - she didn't look strikingly alien in the way that it might usually be conveyed, ie with highly accented cheekbones and very pale skin/hair or something. And it's unclear if that was an intentional artistic decision or not. But, I mean, it worked for me - that girl is crazy hot with or without makeup and I would probably melt in her presence regardless. In a way, I liked that she had a sort of natural look, as if to show that she doesn't even have to try, she just is.

I felt this way about Cho as well. Both Clemence and Katie could've been inhumanely beautiful like the books, but if I didn't read the books and just watched the film you know which one I'd assume to be canonly the prettiest girl on the campus?

Hermione.

I disagree, only because Fleur's beauty was always emphasized as NATURAL. She'd look gorgeous in full-on burlesque make-up, yes, but it wouldn't be apprpriate.

Also, as anyone who knows make-up can tell you, the look they give her, the natural look, is much harder to pull off than slathering some red lipstick on her and calling it a day. They DEFINITELY put makeup on her though, not only because you can't step in front of a camera without some on - it's a necessity to issue you're not washed out by the lights - but because her skin is flawless and poreless.

Essentially, they went for classically beautiful, and what you are seeking is bombshell hot. I don't think Fleur was HOT though, she's never described in the books as such - I think she was beautiful, and hot and beaitful are two different things. And she was NEVER described as 'ravishingly' beautiful in the books, only mysteriously so - you're putting your own interpretation of what alien/magical beauty would be. I don't think it would be ravishing, personally - I think it would be more like they have Fleur styled, plain but with some otherworldly quality.

All of this ends in: you're expecting too much of your own personal spin to have been put onto the character, because she was never described in any sexual terms and was never meant to be smoking hot, just incredibly beautiful; and two you're expecting too much of an actress who is herself just human.
