Oh, I'm not saying that was the writer's intent at all, and it sure didn't help that I came into the series after witnessing several shipwar explosions. And obviously nobody can blame Aang for thinking Katara liked him cause, well, she did.

Yeah, that's what I got. He was genuinely hurt and confused because she definitely didn't shove him into the water when he kissed her, or acted upset or anything. In fact he probably had more reasons to think she liked him like their dance and stuff. I figured it was more of a "why am I not good enough?" more than a "you owe me".

That aside, squicks are squicks (especially for people who have/nearly have been sexually abused) and I'm sorry OP that your show triggered you. That's a huge bummer. Hopefully you can work past it, not to enjoy Katara/Aang, but to be able to enjoy your fandom/show without that rain cloud over your head.

And also the kid watched himself being played by a woman (which i don't think would have bothered him under most circumstances because Aang's got no problem with girls as fighters, dressing like Kyoshi, etc) who was silly and ridiculous. Then he watched "Katara" fawn all over any older male. Who could blame him for feeling insecure and I think we have rarely seen Aang insecure. I think that is what pushed this scene further.

I think we would have seen a different talk or interaction if they had not been to the play. But that play was embarrassing for him and for her and caused a lot of insecurity.

That sucks, OP. I'm glad you were able to work through it and see the finale. I didn't get a rape-y vibe from Aang at all in that scene, but I haven't had the experience you did. It must have been chilling.

I'm so sorry that happened to you, OP, but I really don't think that's what Aang was implying. He had a nice first kiss with a girl, she apparently wouldn't talk about it afterward, and he wanted to know why. I saw him kissing her at the end as him trying to help her make up her mind. A bad idea, but it was his first relationship, and when he realized his mistake, he let her be. The finale was all her decision.

Also wanted to say that it was a terrible thing that happened to you OP. :( It can be hard when you see something on tv or in a movie that revives a bad memory for you so I don't blame you for having bad feelings relating to this ship, or anything else for that matter. I don't blame you for lashing out against it either.

It is canon, but there's no reason why you have to like the pairing no matter what your reasons are.

I'm so sorry you went through that, and I agree on Aang/Katara. I liked it for a while, but one of the reasons I can't ship it in the end is because of that scene. Sure, he's a kid, but if the writers wanted to pair him up with Katara, they could've shown some positive growth between the two to prove they'd be good as romantic partners instead of throwing in... that kind of conflict shortly before making the pairing canon.

I agree. Sloppy writing was sloppy. Which for S3 was a double whammy of fail because of the sheer volume of pointless filler in the last season compared to the previous two.

Really? I loved that scene. It gave a lot more depth and realism to their situation than Katara giving in and it gave Aang a character flaw (something we hadn't seen from him in a while, tbh).

Admittedly I didn't watch a lot of Avatar but I was familiar with the ship wars, and that scene pissed me off. Even without your private reason for disliking the ship OP, I don't think you should feel bad for not liking it if you legitimately don't like the pairing. Even if you said a lot of mean things the "Zutarians" were notorious way back when for being assholes.

Thank you. And yeah, while I'm indifferent to the pairing itself, Zutara fans are a uniformly scary lot. Most of their ship arguments leave me either scratching my head or running for the brain bleach. I just...whaaaaaaaat. I'm 12 years old and what the hell is this.
