I see you there, little yellow boxes. I see you.

Yes, and we're comic book fans. So we feel entitled to bitch and whine about EVERYTHING.

I don't care if it fits comic book canon but I do find it a bit ridiculous that they can't follow the movie canon they've already established. That said I made a conscious choice to ignore that while watching the movie and it helped.

[identity profile] hoorayimrich.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 01:10 am (UTC)(link)
Well now, Emma did mysteriously grow younger for the Wolverine movie. Which is par for the course on 616!Emma's age...

[identity profile] tastylogic.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 02:00 am (UTC)(link)
That is the one thing that has been bugging me about the movie canons. I don't know why it bothers me so much, but seeing teen Emma in Wolverine and then adult Emma in First Class = RAGE! I'm all for a reboot after the failboat of X3 but it seems like they did Emma in First Class because someone REALLY wanted to put January Jones in an unflattering bikini.

I think if anything is trying to remain canon to X3 or Wolverine then they're going to have a very difficult time. those movies were a clusterfuck of nonsense.

There was an interview where they said that the only movies they were taking as canon were the ones that Singer worked on. I think, not positive, that means only the first two. Definitely not X3 or Wolverine. Canon compliant still isn't perfect, but it's better imo if you look at it that way.

Totally agree.

I've seen a few people bitching about the ending with how Charles becomes paralyzed and complaining and complaining about how it's not like the original story. And I was re-reading some Ultimate X-Men today and omg... they rebooted the story and Charles was paralyzed by something different than the original story. Wanting the movies to follow one set canon in relation to the comics is just silly.

[identity profile] jedi-pineapple.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 01:47 am (UTC)(link)
Basically, this. I've never read the comics (and from what I understand they are pretty convoluted, so maybe that's not a bad thing) but I always imagine the movies as yet another AU. And lord knows that Marvels loves AUs.

The backstory I'm familiar with in the comics is that X becomes paralyzed due to the Juggernut's doing (who is his brother). I see the movies as their own universe, and I find the movie's idea better (at least, more heart breaking).

I agree really. I try not to complain about them simply making changes and more about what changes are made. I trust I can still be unhappy with specific changes?

[identity profile] matitablu.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
I have yet to see First Class, but as an old time fan of the comics (though I am currently on a long hiatus...), I agree with the secret. As long as they get the spirit of the X-Men right I'm fine and dandy and they can AU all they want. For instance I felt that Synger's movies were much more respectful of the source material than X3 or Wolverine, which in some parts were far more literal to the books, but ended up being a botched patchwork of storylines from the comics with no internal consistence.

Though as far as nerdrage goes, now I'm kinda bitter that the X-Men franchise is stuck with Fox and can't be synched with the continuity of the Avengers movies.

[identity profile] greatbriton.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 02:29 am (UTC)(link)

I heard something like the X-Men movie rights can't revert back to Marvel unless FOX doesn't use them by making a movie after a few years. But they make a new movie every 2 or so years so they continue to keep the rights, sadly.

I would LOVE for all the marvel movies to be able to mingle.

I really want to stand up and applaud this comment. Because this is how I feel, summed up PERFECTLY. So thank you. :D

Personally I'll take almost any canon change in a movie as long as they make it interesting. IMO, First Class was one of the dullest and dumbest comic book films of the last few years, so just about every writing decision made in the film is fair game for mockery. Time shifted Pixie and Darwin? Heterosexual and nice Mystique? American Moira? Diamond-form Frost who gets owned in 30 seconds? Blech.

Now Kevin Bacon in a mod submarine? That was cool, it's a shame he was in the wrong movie and didn't have a long-haired cat.

[identity profile] strangetwn-god.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 02:51 am (UTC)(link)
Anyone else remember when Spiderman died and came back with poisonous Wolverine claws that popped out of his arm, or that time that Xavier regained the ability to walk and went out fighting with the team, and everyone ignored those stories because they sucked?

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 03:17 am (UTC)(link)
To nitpick, that's not actually Pixie - that's Angel Salvadore (who for some reason was a stripper here)http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Salvadore

Always.

[identity profile] accented.livejournal.com 2011-06-15 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
See when I first heard about First Class I was kind of horrified. I had high hopes for the movie when just the title of the film came out, and I was really turned off by the fact that the only things they seemingly got right was Charles and Erik being old friends as well as Erik's childhood, and that the Hellfire Club was evil/bent on domination and had Emma Frost and Sebastian Shaw as founders.

But after a kind of enlightenment, I realized that I would never enjoy any other X-men movie if I nitpicked them so goddamn much. And I really did like First Class, so.
