My husband has a few actresses on his "list" but my list consists only of characters. He'll be like "so, you mean Peter Wingfield" and I'm like, dude, I dont know crap about Peter Wingfield. I mean Methos!

And seriously, I have as much chance of sleeping with Methos as he does Liv Tyler, so I dont see why he thinks this is crazy.

I'm glad this doesn't happen in Beast Wars fandom.

The most popular ship is voiced by a single person. McNeilcest?

[identity profile] polymorph80.livejournal.com 2011-06-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Oftentimes it's because there's still chemistry between the actors outside of the characters they play; reople don't (usually) just ship RL versions of characters because they like the idea of the bodies.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm not in any live-action fandoms, so I haven't seen this, but goddamn do people really do that? What.
ext_157516: (Default)

[identity profile] subarashiine.livejournal.com 2011-06-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree, but I feel like this shipping particularly happens when the two actors playing those characters develop a friendship in real life and are flirty with one another (or say flirty things) during interviews. Examples of this would be: Zachary Quinto/Chris Pine, Robert Downey Jr./Jude Law, Michael Fassbender/James McAvoy etc...

[identity profile] abluestocking.livejournal.com 2011-06-20 11:53 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I don't get the "you HAVE to ship the actors" bit either. Sometimes I ship the actors too. Most of the time I don't. And it works the other way around as well - you can ship actors and not ship their characters. Just a big YMMV issue all around.

[identity profile] stunt-muppet.livejournal.com 2011-06-20 11:57 pm (UTC)(link)
This is even a thing? Wow, I hadn't noticed.

[identity profile] brandiweed.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:07 am (UTC)(link)
For fuck's sake fandom, not everything is about "I think these two bodies look hot together."

Pfft! Next thing you know you'll be telling us the Internet isn't for porn, and that's just crazy talk.

Image

By the way, I was being sarcastic.

[identity profile] beriel.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:08 am (UTC)(link)
I know how you feel OP.

[identity profile] littleworkerbee.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
If there's chemistry in both instances then yeah, I'll ship both the characters and the people who play them. There's a pretty big difference between the FPS and the RPS, though.

[identity profile] solira21.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
although tbh
I've never understood what's so bad about being in it for the porn
I mean, sure, don't try to call a horse a unicorn- fess up if that's all you're there for and don't force fake ships down other people's throats...
but yeah
two hot bodies are good with me

[identity profile] la-petite-singe.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:22 am (UTC)(link)
...Is that an assumption? Sometimes it's awesome, but I really wouldn't say it's a given.

[identity profile] twistedbones.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
It's because people can't accept that on set two main characters will probably get along and on the internet getting along between to males means they're definitely shagging
There is no male friendship
Ever

RPF creeps me out in general beside a few exceptions, but I see it in for example the BBC Sherlock fandom where people ship bcumbs with a very happily married Martin Freeman and are apparently serious about it. Are they disillusional?

People sometimes can't separate actors from characters. The rest of the time, these actors tend to have genuine chemistry and friendships. RDA and Amanda Tapping (http://26.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_ljf2znw45h1qbaz7co1_400.jpg), anyone?

[identity profile] mskye.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
You're right, OP.

Sometimes fandom is about three bodies looking hot together.

I hate it, too. It's especially uncomfortable when RPF squicks you and you try to avoid it and people will NOT stop bringing it up re: the actors playing the characters you ship. Ugh.

[identity profile] time-ambassador.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
Being somewhat into wrestling slash, I've gotten flack for it before because "eww it's creepy, these are real people you're writing about!" Wrestlers have their in-ring personas just like actors have their characters that they play. I don't write about the real people, I write about the wrestlers in the context of the show. (I mean it's not rocket science, right?)

But some people are weird and can't disconnect the actor/wrestler from the character they play on tv. To me it's night and day.

[identity profile] immortality.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
No, by all means, you don't HAVE to ship the actors if you ship the characters, but personally I can see why people often ship the actors of characters they also ship together. Yes, sometimes it is just about ~omg two pretty people together it would be hot~, but also, chemistry usually DOES exist in order for people to ship them together, so.

Also, sometimes actors are VERY much like their characters, which yeah, doesn't help.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 01:33 am (UTC)(link)
I heartily agree.

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:42 am (UTC)(link)
I didn't realize the assumption was there, but if it is, it's so wrong! I never do RPF - I mean, to each their own, but so not for me!

[identity profile] turkfox.livejournal.com 2011-06-21 01:46 am (UTC)(link)
I've had people trying to prove their ships to me using "evidence" that's really just how they acted their characters together on-screen. It gets old fast when you're not into RPF.

(Anonymous) 2011-06-21 01:55 am (UTC)(link)
I agree with the "it shouldn't be a requirement bit", adding that every time I've ended up shipping RPF, it's been because the actors' chemistry is as delightful to me as the characters they play (in different ways, obviously).
