Eh... I don't know who this person is, but if people are attacking him/giving him shit over that statement, I think they need to learn to live and let live. I've met a lot of Christians who don't like to acknowledge homosexuality, but they try to be respectful and low-key about it. It's STILL homophobic but at least they're not picking fights about it and only bring it up if people ask them a direct question about it (e.g. "So what are your views on homosexuality?"). You can call them out for it, but I don't think that belligerence is very likely at all to change anyone's thoughts, and it's not like they're hurting anyone by NOT stating their opinions unless directly asked. So why do it other than to feel all RIGHTEOUSLY ANGRY?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/nightcrawler_2_/ 2011-07-10 09:06 pm (UTC)(link)
You know, I'd "live and let live", only it's really damn hard when they're actively working on taking your rights away, you know?

(sha la la I'm all over this fucking thread. :| )

[identity profile] thegutterati.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:10 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I feel that way too. If they weren't working so hard to take my rights (and if they didn't kill/bully us) I wouldn't give two shits if they didn't like homosexuality.

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/nightcrawler_2_/ 2011-07-10 09:18 pm (UTC)(link)
(Did I seriously just use "You know" twice in one sentence? WHAT IS WRONG WITH ME.)

Yyyeah, that's pretty much it. I like to think of myself of a peace-loving person, but it's hard to be accepting when I think of the people during Pride marches who hold up signs with pink triangles and nooses just outside the police cordons. Oh, and they're also screaming "DIE, FILTHY FAGGOTS". Yeah... uh, can you go back to loving God and your country at home, please. I promise I'm not going to follow you!

[identity profile] thegutterati.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
oh god that's terrifying ;____;
Where was your pride parade, if you don't mind me asking?

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/nightcrawler_2_/ 2011-07-10 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Just look at the delightful people!

http://galeria.index.hu/belfold/2011/06/18/meleg_meltosag_menete_budapest_pride_2011/2182054_2594956e90e0f168b4ee2690cd166fe8_m.jpg

Classy. Real classy. Anyway, the march itself was on the 18th of June, I think. It was my first one, so I was scared shitless - but hey, it was nowhere as bad as the last one, as no one was hurt. C:

[identity profile] thegutterati.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
That's really scary ;_; Ngl, if I saw that at my local gay pride parade, I would probably cry or something. I'm going for the first time this year, but thankfully no one seems to protest it (from what I hear). http://vcpride.org/ It's all beachy and stuff :D

I'm glad no one was hurt, but still.... /shudder

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/nightcrawler_2_/ 2011-07-10 09:50 pm (UTC)(link)
If you think that's scary, check the 2008 one!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/europe/7491830.stm

(Yeah... I don't know why I torture myself with these videos.) Anyway, yours seems much nicer than ours, so - enjoy! C:

[identity profile] thegutterati.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:55 pm (UTC)(link)
oh man, thats sad/scary, too. I've seen a lot of homophobia in my home town, so I just super thankful that they seem to leave pride alone.
If you like torturing yourself, this documentary is amazing http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bOrz5k0jWdU
the follow up is http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ticxD0GfewA
they are both very good but had to watch at times.

And thanks! I hope it'll be fun c:

Holy shit! I heard about this on the news, but I didn't see those pics. Crikey :(

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/nightcrawler_2_/ 2011-07-10 10:15 pm (UTC)(link)
On the news? :O May I ask where you're from? I wondered if we were in the international media...

[identity profile] kallanda-lee.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 10:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in Western Europe, currently. I thought I heard it on the radio, which is where I get most my news but I might have read it. Anyway the context was the European parliament member Sophie in 't Veld actually took it upon herself to join the parade and was then talking abut it. Though it was more downplayed in the sense that it was mentioned there was"unrest" and riot police was used, but there wasn't much about the hate slogans.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-10 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
People like the anon you replied to usually aren't actively working to take our rights away, though. Keeping it to themselves means exactly that. It's how they've chosen to live, but they're not trying to force everyone else to live that way.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-10 09:26 pm (UTC)(link)
Oops, I meant to say "People like the anon you replied to is talking about"

[identity profile] http://users.livejournal.com/nightcrawler_2_/ 2011-07-10 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Maybe. Or maybe they'll silently vote for parties who focus on "traditional values" in their campaigns, and when they're elected, strange things start happening. Like, a new Constitution that doesn't forbid discrimination against gays. Or, out of nowhere, an attempt at banning the Pride march. Or whatever else they can come up with.

Yeah, this is what's happening here right now and I'm slightly bitter. You can probably tell.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:15 pm (UTC)(link)
If people have a right of "not believing in homosexuality"(whatever that means), then gay people should have the right to argue something that pertains to them personally.

[identity profile] seiberwing.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
Why should we 'let live' for someone who doesn't think we should exist? It's not like saying he doesn't like our favorite sports team, being gay is a part of oru identity.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-10 09:58 pm (UTC)(link)
tbh i think people are misunderstanding the situation for reasons i've already explained twice (different culture and my own thoughts).

he always talked about love and tolerance before so maybe that's why i think he's just giving a typical answer.

[identity profile] goobbledigook.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 10:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Homophobia is homophobia. A homophobe in the west saying the same thing would be a homophobe anywhere, and if he said this here, he would still be a homophobe.

Talking about tolerance and excluding gay people from that is not exactly news when it comes to hypocritical christians.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-10 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
*shrugs* maybe he is. but maybe it's because i'm a fan that i'm seeing things differently.

he always talked about tolerance and love. why would he repeat the shit christians already know?

[identity profile] akuryounoseiki.livejournal.com 2011-07-10 10:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Being Siwon's fan doesn't erase the fundamental fact of how problematic his words are. This has nothing to do with cultural relativism either: what he is saying is homophobic. period.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-10 10:24 pm (UTC)(link)
not arguing how problematic his words are. i'm just trying to add cultural context and maybe a possible alternative theory.

but whatever. culture has nothing to do with how a person's thoughts etc

culture has nothing to do with how a person's thoughts etc

...Culture actually has quite a lot to do with how a person's thoughts etc.

(Anonymous) 2011-07-10 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
i know. i was being sarcastic because they're telling me "IT DOESN'T MATTER IF KOREA AS A WHOLE THINKS HOMOSEXUALITY IS A DISEASE - HE. STILL. SAID. THOSE. WORDS."

Lol, sorry, I wasn't sure. I mostly just wanted to comment because the thought of etc being used aggravatedly as a verb cheered me up in the middle of a disheartening thread.
